registration and a campus openhouse. As a reminder,
the Faculty/Staff reception will take place from 3-4 p.m.
in the Center for the Arts, followed by the Softball Field
Groundbreaking at 4:00 p.m. The CCAA Executive
Board welcomes you to attend all the events during the

Thank you in advance for welcoming our guests to
campus this coming weekend, and for your help in
making this a successful reunion time for our treasured
alumnae.
Distinguished Speaker Series 1Lt. Alea Nadeem

1LT Alea Nadeem, Special
Operations USAF.
Topic: “Becoming a Woman
Leader—After My Life as a
Young Woman in Iraq.”

hostage, and how that life
dramatically influenced her
decision to serve as a United
States Air Force Officer in tribute to the US agents
who rescued her from Iraq at the age of twelve.
It is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. in the Missouri Recital
Hall; a reception follows in the foyer at 8:15 p.m. after
the event.
Human Resources
Scent Awareness: Please be mindful of the effects
that scented products can cause and refrain from
wearing them on the Cottey College campus. People
with chemical sensitivity are adversely affected (nausea,
vomiting, headaches, and migraines) by fragrances
found in such personal products as perfumes, hand/body
lotions, hair sprays, colognes, and aftershaves.
Judy R. Rogers Staff Enrichment Award: If you are
interested in applying for the Judy R. Rogers Staff
Enrichment Award you can contact Betsy McReynolds
at ext. 2103 or find it online at the Human Resources
website under the Faculty/Staff portal on the intranet.
The Judy R. Rogers Award for Staff Enrichment
has been established to support the development
of administrative and/or hourly staff and to foster
professional development. The award is intended to
encourage participation in short courses, workshops,
conferences, and similar short-term experiences. The
Award is named in honor of Judy R. Rogers, Ph. D.,
President of Cottey College since July 2004.
General staff of the College (except President's Council)
who are full-time employees and/or .75 full time
equivalent (FTE) are eligible to apply for the Award,
which may be used for a structured program to support
and enhance the staff member's professional knowledge,
skills, and abilities. Examples of appropriate activities
include: visit(s) to other colleges and universities and/
or professional association(s); conference attendance;
specific skills short courses on topics. This does not
include on-line courses.
The Award is valued at a maximum of $500.00 and all
funds must be expended within one year of receiving the
Award. Applications will be taken until June.
Scholarship Opportunity: The Nevada Branch of the
American Association of University Women (AAUW)
is offering a $400 scholarship to a woman whose
education has been interrupted. Applicants may be
currently enrolled in college courses, or planning to
enroll this year. Financial need and a commitment to
earning a college degree are criteria for the award. If
you are interested in applying, please contact Betsy
McReynolds at ext. 2103.
Position Searches: The Office of Human Resources
is currently advertising for a maintenance technician
to replace Michael Perrin, data entry clerk, accounting
clerk, full-time hall director, half-time hall director, and
secretary for the Institute for Women’s Leadership and
Social Responsibility.
Faculty/Staff News
Paul Cook has indicated his intention to resign from Cottey
at the end of this academic year. Dr. Cook has accepted a
position at the Indiana University Kokomo in their English
Department. This is an exciting opportunity for Paul and
also allows the Cooks to relocate nearer to Ashley’s family.
Paul has been a valued member of the Cottey faculty for
the past two years and will be missed.
Judyth A. Wier has accepted the position of vice president
of institutional advancement. Judyth will be coming to
Cottey from the UNO Foundation, University of New
Orleans. She plans to be on campus on April 9. Please
help us welcome her to Cottey and to Nevada.
Dr. Paul Cook, Dr. Don Perkins, Dr. Kathy Pivak, and Dr.
Trisha Stubblefield attended the Conference on College
Composition and Communication March 21-24, 2012, in St.
Louis, MO.
Dr. Brenda Ross, Dr. Julie Tietz, and Ms. Caitlyn Davis
attended the 7th Annual Conference on Applied Learning
in Higher Education at St. Joseph, MO, March 22-24,
2012. Dr. Ross moderated several sessions, while Ms.
Davis and Dr. Tietz gave a Student Researcher and Mentor
presentation titled “Sharing the World: Using a Study
Abroad Experience to Enhance an On-campus Service
Learning Project.”
In February, Dr. Sonia Cowen, executive director of the
Institute for Women’s Leadership and Social Responsibility,
taught StrengthsQuest™ and leadership to hundreds of
newly enlisted US Army recruits studying interrogation
techniques at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, home of the
U.S. Army Intelligence Center and the U.S. Army Network
Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)/9th Army
Signal Command. Fort Huachuca was one of the few U.S.
military forts that served as home to the Women of the
Army Nurse Corps and the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps
(WAAC). In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed
a bill to discontinue the voluntary/auxiliary WAAC and
replaced it with the Women’s Army Corps. In September
of 2010, Spc. Alyssa Peterson who trained in interrogation
techniques taught at Ft. Huachuca, was one of the first U.S.
Army female soldiers to die in Iraq.
While at Ft. Huachuca, Dr. Cowen also met with several
female reserve soldiers who are looking for a college where
they may apply their GI Bill funds; one in the group told Dr.
Cowen that she has already been accepted to Cottey for
the fall of 2012. Dr. Cowen was honored by the 301st with
the presentation of their battalion coin.
Also in late February, Dr. Sonia Cowen, Dr. Mari Anne
Phillips, vice president of student life at Cottey, and four
second-year Cottey students (Brittne Walker, Samantha
Martin, Malyssa Dunson, Kelly Spong) attended the U.S.
Air Force Academy’s (USAFA’s) National Character and
Leadership Symposium, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Attendance at this annual Symposium offered our students
and attending staff the opportunity to access additional
information and networks with researchers and practitioners
of specific importance to women’s leadership and social
responsibility.
For example, students and staff were able to benefit from
several presentations, including (1) “Biology of Leadership:
Character, Chemistry, and How to Use the Latest
Neuroscience to Excel,” led by biological anthropologist
Dr. Helen Fisher and psychologist Dr. Pamela Paresky,
who identified how we are “neurochemically inclined to be
Charismatic, Authoritative, Commanding, or Diplomatic”
leaders; (2) “Expect to Win: Proven Strategies for
Maximizing Your Success,” led by Carla Harris, a 24-year
Wall Street veteran and black female who now serves
as the managing director of Morgan Stanley Investment
Management, and who was named in 2009, 2010, and
2011, as one of the U.S. Bankers’ Top 25 Most Powerful
Women in Finance; (3) “WordFood: The Power of Words in
Leadership,” led by Julia Hubbel, President of the Hubbel
Group, Inc., and author of numerous books on helping
businesses understand the importance of language in
shaping their leadership proficiencies; (4) “Professional
Responsibilities vs. Personal Convictions,” led by USAF
LTC. Linnell Letendre, Deputy Chief, Trial and Appellate
Government Council Division at Joint Base Andrews,
Maryland, who represents the Air Force in appellate review
of all court-martials; (5) “The Secret Weapon to Leadership
Excellence—Integrity,” led by Theresa Melaragno, a
nationally recognized “speaker, television host” and
author of The Integrity Meltdown; (6) “Representing the
Flight Crew in Critical Situations,” led by Dr. Ellen Ochoa,
former astronaut and now Deputy Director of the Johnson
Space Center; (7) “Commander’s Toolbox: A Discussion
on Leadership and Ethical Decision Making,” led by Major
General Angela Salinas, U.S. Marine Corps, who was the
first “woman assigned as a combat service support ground
monitor responsible for the assignments of over 1000
senior officers”; (8) Ellen Tauscher, Under Secretary of
State for Arms Control and International Security; and (9)
“Leadership Lessons from Enron,” led by Sherron Watkins,
former vice president of the Enron Corporation and primary
“whistleblower.” It is a goal and intention of the Institute
to send additional students to the USAFA Character and
Leadership Symposia each year.
On February 29, Dr. Cowen also attended the Study
Missouri conference held in Jefferson City to introduce
Missouri legislators to the hundreds of international
students who are attending Missouri institutions of higher
education.

“C” for Yourself! Weekend
“C” For Yourself! Weekend will take place Friday, April
13, through Sunday, April 15. Currently we have 56
students and 46 guests registered to be on campus
Friday evening through Sunday brunch. They will be
participating in special planned activities, staying in
the suites, and eating in Raney Dining Room. Please
make them feel welcome! A schedule of events for the
weekend will be sent out via e-mail prior to the event.
Assessment Day
Remember that April 11 is Assessment Day. Classes
are cancelled and students do not report to campus
jobs. A more detailed schedule will appear in next
week’s Chronicle. As has become the custom, other
important activities are scheduled for Assessment Day,
which this year will include housing sign-up for students
returning to Cottey for the 2012-13 academic year, and
a campuswide meeting to review a draft of goals for the
revised strategic plan.
Assessment Day has been held each spring since 1999.
Consistently, 75% of students participate, and often the
percentages are as high as 80% to 90%. Campus-wide
involvement in planning and organizing is the key to
excellent student participation. Faculty, staff (including
student life, housekeeping, and campus employment
supervisors) and the Student Government Association
play key roles in the promotion of Assessment Day. The
event raises awareness among campus constituencies
about the importance of gathering information on student
learning at the institutional level, and is vital to the data
collection effort necessary for accreditation.
Student Employee Appreciation
During the week of April 9, National Student
Employment Week, the financial aid office will be
recognizing all student employees by sending them a
note of appreciation and a chocolate bar. Please take a
moment during that week to let your student employees
know how much they are appreciated.

Congratulations to the 49 employees participating in the
Biggest Loser Challenge (BLC). As a group they lost
83.5 pounds in March, for a total of 348.5 pounds lost
since our start on January 9th. Wow! Did you know that
students are doing their own BLC and that 29 students
lost a total of 67.5 pounds in February! Congratulations
again to both our employees and students for working
hard to achieve their goals.
Fitness walking/jogging will begin on Tuesday, April 3,
and continue throughout the month of April on every
Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15 p.m. leaving from the
Hinkhouse steps. Everyone is welcome to attend. Each
evening we will divide up into groups based on who
wants to walk or jog, and at what speed they would
like to participate. Karen Polon will be unable to attend
the first evening of walking/jogging, so if you have
questions about a jogging program please let her know
and information will be provided. Carrie Dreyer has
volunteered to organize the walkers and field questions
about walking on April 3 at 5:15 p.m. Thanks Carrie!
The Cottey Wellness Program is offering all employees
an opportunity to take part in its first mini triathlon for
employees called the “Give it a Tri “ event. “Give it a Tri”
will take place on May 5, Saturday, and will include three
events or segments, swimming, cycling and walking/
or/running. Now here is the great part, you team up
with either one or two other employees on campus to
help you finish the triathlon. Teams can be made up of
two individuals if someone wants to participate in two
segments of the triathlon or you can have three people
on your team, with each person doing one segment. You
can be a team of all men, all women, or co-ed! We will
take everyone who wants to participate. Talk to some of
your co-workers about participating, maybe your office
wants to enter a team? Anyone who wants to participate
and is looking for a partner(s) should contact Karen
Polon who will distribute a list of all individuals looking to
partner up with someone. Lots of people are exercising
each week, why not add some excitement to your
workout by participating in a segment of the triathlon.
Watch for more detailed information about “Give it a Tri”
in next week’s Chronicle.
