The Inexhaustible God
“God is inexhaustible, His love is eternal, His mercies are endless…”
Dr. Martyn-Lloyd Jones
“Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of he earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” Is. 40:28
Weariness, fatigue, and exhaustion—these are all part of our present human experience. Maybe you
remember a time when you were able to “run and not grow weary and walk and not grow faint.” For
me, those times are increasingly in the rear-view mirror. Yet, the exhaustion and fatigue that we experience in this life is not merely physical. We too—along with all of creation have a constant spiritual
groaning: “And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies… (Romans 8:23)” In the
heart of every Christian, there is a groaning—a longing—a restlessness—a yearning to be set free. It
can be exhausting to battle daily against the lusts of your own heart. It is exhausting to struggle to love
others. It can be depressing to see how slowly we grow in grace. It is draining to live in a broken
world—where we victimize others and we ourselves are also victims. Do you ever grow tired of your
lack of growth? Do you ever grow weary of your complaining spirit? Do you ever reach the point of
exhaustion when it comes to the discontentment of your heart?
Yet—as we ponder our own spiritual weariness—we must remember that God does not grow weary.
He is not in need of a vitamin infusion. He does need to work out at the local YMCA. He is inexhaustible…Let that thought settle into your soul for a moment. The Creator of the ends of the earth does
not grow tired or weary! Which means that though we get tired of ourselves, our struggles, our lack of
growth in holiness, our failure to forgive and love others; God is never exhausted by our prayers, struggles,
tears, sighs or groans. God is not surprised, taken back, or annoyed by our constant cries and tears.
In fact, one of the hallmarks of Christian living is that even though our lives are characterized by joy in
the Lord, there is also present a holy dissatisfaction. In the heart of every Christian must be an ever increasing hunger and thirst for righteousness and a groaning to be finally set free. So when you are exhausted and weary spiritually; when you are despondent over your sin, remember that God never places your prayers on hold. In fact, according to Psalm 34:17-18, He invites and welcomes His weary ones
to cry out to Him: “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their
troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Well, you may say “I am weary of myself and God is inexhaustible. That sounds great, but how do I
really know that this God does not grow weary of me?” Great question…How do we know?
We can’t see God, but we have seen and heard from His Son:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).”

Discovering the Westminster
Eternity
I am in the third week of a miserable cold. Winter’s grip is strong and chilling. My uncle has been
stricken with cancer. My cousin Kay’s soul has gone home.
Lord give me clarity to see glimpses of the eternity that you have planned for your people. Once again, I
turn to the Catechism -Q. 38 Shorter Catechism: “What benefits do believers receive from Christ at the resurrection?”
A. “ At the resurrection, believers being raised up in glory, shall be openly acknowledged and acquitted in
the day of judgment, and made perfectly, blessed in the full enjoying of God to all eternity.”
I don’t want to die. I want to live a long life even if it is sometimes hard. I will cling though and make it my
comfort in life to know that I will be “made perfectly blessed in the full enjoying of God to all eternity.”
Thank you Lord,
Amen
