ISHRAD Newsletter #2 February 2012
Dear ISHRAD-ers
Annual meetings and special events
ISHRAD is organising the AGM's in co-operation with the ECR that takes
annually place in Vienna, Austria. In addition we have a special event is
going to be organised in various different venues worldwide. We had the
First Symposium of the International Society for the History of Radiology,
held at BIR in November 2011. Adrian Thomas, the Honorary Librarian told
us about “The History of the British Institute of Radiology.” Although the
BIR is the oldest radiological society in the world it is currently going
through a difficult time, and there are concerned about the long term
security of the historical books and journals collections and aspects of the
archives. The BIR also holds the archives relating to the EMI scanner.
AGM 2012
The AGM for 2012 is to be at ECR (Vienna Austria Centre) on the 3 March
in the Austria Centre from 1 to 3 pm (Room: 5/O3 A450).
I am delighted to announce that the speaker will be the well known
radiology historian Otha Linton MSJ. The highly productive Otha Linton has
written many books on the history of radiology. Two recent ones are “The
American Board of Radiology – 75 Years of Serving the Public” and “Johns
Hopkins Radiology 1896-2010,” which latter book he co-authored with Bob
W Gayler MD. I liked the book on Johns Hopkins. So much of radiology
history concentrates on the early years and so it is good that the more
recent years are being covered. I particularly appreciated the account of

how a radiology department was organized before computers. There is also
a description of the development of interventional radiology. Otha has now
issued his 14th radiology history volume which is a history of the Beth
Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston.

ISHRAD Autumn Meeting 2012
We are having our 2012 meeting of ISHRAD on Saturday October 27th
2012 and have invited the Dutch Historical Section of Radiology. The
meeting is in Ghent in the "Museum Dr Guislain". This is a psychiatric
museum and holds the neuroradiological collections. There are many good
local hotels and we are investigating the Best Western Chamade, which is
a small, economic hotel located at 500 meter from the railway station (and
direct in front of a tramway station: Tram n° n1) for the centre of the city
and to the museum Dr Guislain.
On the Saturday we will have historical sessions in the morning and
afternoon. There will be a sandwich lunch and a visit of the collections. In
the evening we will have a convivial dinner in the city of Ghent. The
programme will be on “Military Radiology and Belgian/Benelux Radiology."
Our provisional programme includes:
“Milestones of the Belgian radiology"(Dr J-P Joris), “Ultrasounds and CT:
spin-off of two WW (Dr E. Pouders),”History of CT and MR in Belgium"
(Prof. M. Collard), "History of radiotherapy in Belgium" (probably by Prof.
G. Storme), " Military radiology at the "Westfront" during WW I" (Med Col
René Van Tiggelen).
On the Sunday there will be an optional social program with a visit of the
city, lunch and visit of museums.

2012: 40 Years of CT Scanning (BIR)
2012 marks 40 years of CT scanning! The CT/EMI scanner was announced
at the BIR Annual Congress in 1972, and It is now difficult to imagine how
medicine could be practiced without CT scanning. To mark the 40 years the
2012 BIR President’s Conference is in “CT in Clinical Practice – State of the
Art CT. A tribute to Sir Godfrey Hounsfield.”
The Silvanus Thompson Lecture is to be given by Professor Willi Kalendar
entitled “Future Prospects for CT – How Far Can Technology be
Developed?” There are two historical lectures with Adrian Thomas (London)
talking on “CT: An historical perspective,” and Liz Beckmann (Petts Wood)
is speaking on “Godfrey Hounsfield: a tribute.”

The Poynter Lecture: “Shocking Bodies”
The 2012 Poynter is to be given by Dr Iwan Rhys Morus who is Reader in
History at Aberystwyth University in Wales. The lecture is on 21st March
2012 at 6.00p.m. and will be held at The Wellcome Building Conference
Centre, 183 Euston Road, London.
Luigi Galvani's discovery of 'animal electricity' at the end of the eighteenth
century resulted in a whole new world of possibilities in which electricity
could cure sickness, restore sexual potency and even raise the dead. This
is the story of how electricity emerged as a tool for making sense of our
bodies and the world around us. For the Victorians, electricity was the
science of spectacle and of wonder. It provided them with new ways of
probing the nature of reality and understanding themselves. For some

people saying that ‘electricity is life’ was much the same thing as saying
there was no such thing as a soul and therefore no such thing as God. For
others, the slogan was an invitation to buy new commodities like electric
belts or corsets that could revitalize a flagging body. In this lecture, based
on his recent book ‘Shocking Bodies’ the lecturer will turn to the history of
electricity and the body to find some shocking answers.
This lecture is free and is open to the public. Prior to the lecture, in the
afternoon the current Wellcome exhibition will be available for viewing.
In addition from 3.30 p m - 5.30 p m, for BSHM members and their guests
only, there will be a mini-exhibition of related texts, documents and
pictures from the Wellcome Library collection to compliment the lecture.
Drinks and simple refreshments will be provided by the Wellcome between
5.30 p m and 6.00 p m. for members of the BSHM.
Reservation is needed; please reply to the Secretary of BSHM:
