PASTOR’S COLUMN
Last year, I wrote a Pastor’s Column about the Sacrament of
Marriage, and exhorted folks who were living together or were
married outside the Church, to consider getting married (or
getting their marriage “blessed”) in the Church. As it is May, and
the number of weddings rise between now and the fall, I thought
it best to rerun a modified version of my comments regarding
marriage in this column. At both at Holy Cross and Immaculate
Conception, a cornucopia of marriages are scheduled in the
coming month; this is a blessing for both Parishes, as, in an era
when the number people getting married is not as high as it once
was, here in Dover and Marydel marriages are bountiful!
to address marital status. To list all the possible circumstances
would take a book the size of a Herman Wouk novel. So, I will
focus on the three most common circumstances below. (For
more complicated scenarios you will need speak to one of the
Priests or Deacons in the Parish.)
⇒ If you are married civilly and this is your only
marriage: If you are couple who, for whatever reason,
married civilly, but not in Church — and you have only been
married once — you can have your married “convalidated”
in the Church (often referred to as “blessed in the
Church”). This takes your civil marriage and makes it into a
marriage in the Catholic Church.
Ratings, Weddings and Genies. TV lover that I am, I can
remember back in 1970, watching the wedding episode of “I
Dream of Jeannie” when in a play for better ratings, using
wedding based glitz and glamor, Jeannie and Major Nelson (a lady
genie and her astronaut beau) tied the knot. Alas, not even a
genie and a wedding could save the show – and it was soon
cancelled. This episode of “I Dream of Jeannie” tell us something
about weddings and marriages that life experience confirms. A
wedding should not be about show and flash, or glitz and
glamour; rather it should solemnly celebrate the first day of a
lifetime of a marriage of a man and a woman.
•
•
Wedding Bell Blues? In our world today, weddings seem to
have taken on a greater importance than the marriage itself.
There are wedding TV shows, wedding registries, wedding
planners, and a whole host of things that have made weddings
the second largest expense in a person’s life, after buying a
home. The problem with this is that “the wedding” has become
the focus of attention, while marriage has become some mere
echoed after effect. To make an analogy, it would be like having a
child and making the entire focus on the child’s birth, and then
once he’s born, tossing him aside and just looking back on that
birth event.
If you have been civilly married (or married in
another faith without Church approval) for over
four years, you need only to meet with one of our
Priests or Deacons, complete a pre-marital inquiry
to determine your marital status, and then a
convalidation via the Catholic Rite of Marriage may
be scheduled.
If your civil marriage is more recent (four years or
less), you may have to do pre-Cana preparation
before the Convalidation of your marriage.
⇒ If you (or your spouse) are Catholic, and had a
previous civil marriage before this one: This is usually
fairly simple. Since you (or your spouse) are Catholic and
married outside of the proper Catholic form of marriage
without permission of the appropriate Church authority,
that civil marriage reflects a "lack of canonical form" and can
be deemed null. This entails some paperwork. Once I get
the approved documentation back from the Diocese
(usually, in a week or two), we can get your Convalidation
planned (and if married over four years, the simpler process
noted above applies)
Of Chachkies and Marriage. To be clear, in the Catholic
Church, there is a not a Sacrament of Wedding; there is a
Sacrament of Marriage. The focus of that Sacrament is not on
the event (the wedding), but on the vocation (married life).
Thus, I often tell couples preparing for marriage to stop
watching TV wedding shows. Why? Because marriage is not
about the “event” of a wedding but about a life spent together.
Thus, while a wedding passes into history in a few hours (after
the cutting of the cake and the receiving of some Kenmore
blenders, gift cards, and Hallmark Store chachkies), the marriage
endures. And marriage in the Church — received as a Sacrament
— allows the Baptized parties of the marriage to share in the
marital graces, given by God, to bless married life.
⇒ If you are Catholic and have a previous marriage in
the Catholic Church (or married with Church
permission in another Christian Church/location): In
this circumstance, you may need an annulment. An
annulment speaks to the questions of whether a marriage
was validly contracted at the time of consent (i.e., was there
duress, were there impediments, etc.). If it is deemed that
the circumstances on the day of the marriage were not
proper or that informed consent was impeded, an
annulment may be issued, freeing you to marry. The good
news is, is that process, with emendations put forth by
Popes Benedict and Francis, has become much quicker.
Marriage in the Church. And so, I commend you: If you are
married outside of the Church, seek to have your marriage
convalidated (blessed) in the Church. This is the faith and
teaching of your Church, moreover, this is the call of Jesus
Christ to a man and a woman in the vocation of married life.
Christ is asking: Do you want to do what is necessary to marry
according to our faith and the laws of His Church: Please say, “I
do.”
Mission Not Impossible. To this end, as Pastor of the parish, I
want to commend our couples who are not married in the
Church, to consider addressing that status. Many folks think that
getting your marriage “blessed by the Church” is an arduous or
even impossible task; in most cases, it is not. To this end, I
would ask men and women, in non-Church marriages, to seek to
amend that situation, and come into the fold of those married in
Christ.
How to Get Your Marriage Blessed in the Church: There
are several different situations that entail slightly different actions
Yours in Christ,
Fr. James Lentini, Pastor

Dana is already a serious runner, her biggest competition being her friend
and bus driver Mr. Buzz!! The big race was finished in just a hair over 19
minutes by eighth grader Blaise M. As he attempted to cool down he
managed a spirited “Come on Caughnery!! GO!!” as his fourth grade
competition crossed the finish line seconds behind him. It was such a great
night for everyone involved. Many thanks to our extra wonderful HSA
ladies, Tri-State Sports and our very generous sponsors for making this
fabulous event happen for us.
SCHOOL UPDATE
I’m sure everyone is familiar with the old expression, hit the ground running.
Let me assure you of the appropriateness of that old adage for HC last
Monday. It had been the loveliest of Easter holidays. The Lord had blessed
us with picture perfect weather and many of us seized the opportunity to
work and play outdoors. Eleven blissful days…..all came to a screeching halt
as the alarm called us to attention early on that Monday morning….the first
day back….
…And the week isn’t over yet. Saturday morning dawns to a new and
beautiful day, the sun shines bright and the birds chirp over Holy Cross as
our precious second graders and their proud parents begin to gather. It’s
First Holy Communion Day and their beauty and holy innocence brings
tears to my eyes straightaway. The masses could not have been more
lovely. Many thanks to our Director of Religious Education for HC parish,
Mrs. Cindy Krebs, second grade teachers Mrs. McDermott, and Mrs. Cote
for their role in the formation of our second graders for the reception of
the Most Blessed Sacrament for the first time ever in their young lives. The
very thought of it gives me goosebumps in a good way.
So, ladies and gentlemen, that’s it for the latest installment of the Life and
Times of HCS. Pray for us, will you?
It was going to be a non-stop day. Our Knitting Club, in recognition of all
the great work they have done as community outreach was being honored
by the Jefferson Award Foundation. This is not the first time our young
knitters have been so recognized by the wonderful folks who provide young
people with the tools they need to make the difference they seek and
whose mission is to power others to have maximum impact on the things
they care about most. The ceremony was honoring those who were being
recognized across the state of Delaware for their accomplishments in
community service. What a learning experience for Emily, Reagan, Josselyn,
and Gwyneth, all of whom were a bit awed by the enormity of it all; not to
mention such famous people as the Governor and several State Senators…
wow! It was a special treat for them when coming up from behind we heard
“I knew I recognized that tartan!” and as we turned around Dover’s Mayor
Christiansen was on hand to greet and congratulate the girls for the club’s
significant contributions to municipal agencies this past year. We all enjoyed
a yummy lunch followed by an extremely decadent dessert. Our deepest
gratitude goes out to the United Healthcare Agency for their award of a
$500.00 grant to the Holy Cross Knitting Club to foster and promote
future works by our sweet knitters. Do you know that our knitters have
knitted well in excess of 1800 hats since the club’s inception? The girls were
presented with one of those great big huge checks (it took all four of them
to hold it) as they beamed from ear to ear. You should see the great
pictures!!! Not long after, we were flying down 896 on our way
home…..next stop???

That would be Dover’s Modern Maturity Center who was playing host to
the Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League Invitational Meet and
Awards Banquet. We are so proud of Samantha M. who finished in FIRST
PLACE as an individual participant for this seasons regional competition.
Samantha was invited to participate as an at-large competitor, later to be
awarded a trophy for her first place finish in Region 9. Mrs. Crawford and I
always kid about going for “the chicken.” The MMC makes the best fried
chicken ever, and I hear that their mashed potatoes are made with real
butter and sour cream. That on top of that decadent dessert…holy socks I
was ready to be wheeled out in a wheel barrow …to my next stop……
City Hall! Running a few seconds behind is my modus operandi and finding
convenient parking was no easy feat because Mayor Christiansen was
honoring the Jefferson Awardees at the local level at 7:30 that evening.
There was standing room only as students from William Henry School,
Positive Outcomes School, and Dover High School just to name a few
joined the HC knitters in being awarded certificates and beautiful gold pins
by our Mayor. Mayor Christiansen was most gracious in his words of praise
for the efforts in community outreach made by the youth of his
constituency.

Simultaneous to the Math League event and ceremony at City Hall, all kinds
of fun was being had at the Dover Grotto’s where HC families were dining
out as we forge ahead in raising funds for our Michigan or Bust!! campaign.
Gargantuan gratefulness and gratitude to Grottos for allowing us a
handsome percentage of the sales as Holy Cross turned out in great
numbers to send our OM team to Worlds!

Okay; so that was Monday….Tuesday…Wednesday…Thursday… and
finally Fun Friday! It was finally here! What fun you ask? Weren’t you on
hand for the annual 5K Race/Walk at Wild Quail? The Wild Quail
community offers the most peaceful and picturesque course for a 5K Race
where our students, moms and dads, teachers, Mr. Buzz, (our fabulous
driver on Bus 3) Deacon Vince….and then those serious runners with their
ankles and knees all wrapped up just chomping at the bit to get out there
and run! Personally, I can’t relate; it’s sad, I know. The whole event was
started off with a Kiddie Run, a big HC shout-out to second grader Dana S.
who finished far out in front of her competition crossing the finish line first.
