Message from the Executive Director
Rosh Hashana is again upon us
and the holiday brings with it
both the responsibility and the
opportunity to reflect on the past
and look forward to the future.
Here at the JCC a sense of renewal abounds as we are set to begin
the year in our newlyrenovated, magnificent facility.
The beauty of the physical space reflects our commitment to
enrich our community in mind, body, and spirit.
I have always believed that as Jews, our past is inextricably
linked to our future. Later this year we will look back as we
move forward when we celebrate the JCC's 60th anniversary as
an agency - 30 years in Englewood and 30 years in Tenafly.
Over six decades our membership has grown from a small
group of founders to encompass thousands of families and individuals across Bergen County.
Time has brought many changes, but our mission has remained
the same. Our 60th Anniversary Gala will pay tribute to a
special group of people who have been instrumental in safeguarding and advancing this mission. Charles and Lynne

Thirty years ago when we moved to Tenafly, our first president
was a special man by the name of Henry Taub. Henry was a
man of few words who accomplished great deeds. A few
months ago before he passed away, the Henry & Marilyn Taub
Foundation offered us a rare opportunity to raise the remaining
$4.5 million we need to close the renovation campaign. The
Taub Community Challenge works like this: if the JCC community raises $3 million by April 1, 2012 then the Foundation
will gift the final $1.5 million.
As we begin a New Year, my wish for our community is that we
will rise to the challenge and remain true to the values of
tzedakah, community, and the Jewish future.

To recognize the gift, students from the JCC School of
Performing Arts and the BergenPAC Musical Theater
Workshop presented a private performance in the JCC Eric
Brown Theater this past July for Angelica Berrie, the Benaroya
family and friends of the Berrie Foundation. The show, Musical
Mischief, was written by Deb Roberts and featured a series of
narrative vignettes, songs and dances built around the theme
of a talented group of teens who are entertaining the new
Royal Couple, who have agreed to sponsor the young performers “green,” environmentally sustainable school.

Angelica Berrie, president of the Russell Berrie Foundation,
generously established the David Benaroya Youth Performance
Endowment Fund at the JCC. The $25,000 fund was created
as a loving tribute to David, of blessed memory, who was a
talented young actor and active member of the JCC School
of Performing Arts.
At the event, JCC Executive Director Avi Lewinson personally
thanked Angelica, a close friend of the Benaroya family and a
recent board member at the JCC, for the Foundation’s support.
“It will be an honor and privilege for the JCC to instill and
perpetuate David’s love of performing arts in the hearts of all
the many young men and women who attend our school,” Avi
said. “And I am pleased to add that David’s parents, Linda and
Raphael Benaroya, have recently named our new Youth Center
at the JCC in David’s memory as well. We will be holding a
special dedication for it this fall.”
Earmarked to develop and run theater programs specifically
geared for young teens, the fund will greatly enhance the
Performing Arts curriculum by supporting the school’s
performing groups, including the JCC Youth Performance
Ensemble, Teen Performance Ensemble, and our professional
teen performance company, Palistage.
Angelica’s husband, Russ Berrie (of blessed memory) was a
founding member of the JCC and a longtime member of the
board. He and Angelica served as longtime, generous supporters of the JCC and together, for decades, they have been a
driving force behind many JCC programs, including our stateof-the-art new health center, which bears their name.
“David derived so much joy from participating in theatre
classes and sharing in performance experiences with his
peers,” says Deborah Roberts, the school’s director, who
worked closely with David as a drama coach while he
attended the school. “We are so very grateful to Angelica
and the Berrie Foundation for honoring David’s memory
with this endowment, as it will not only support the school,
but will provide meaningful opportunities to other young
people, like David, who possess a real passion for theater.”
The JCC School of Performing Arts offers a progressive program for students looking to attain professional or recreational
goals. Many students have gone on to enjoy successful careers
on Broadway, film, theater and television.

Film Screening: About Face –
The Story of the Jewish Refugee Soldiers of WWII
with Guest Speaker Danny Gans
Sunday, November 6, 1-3 pm
Adapted from the book The Enemy Within, this acclaimed film brings to life – through
archival photos, film footage, and interviews – the previously untold story of thousands
of young Jews who fled Nazi Germany but performed an ‘about face’ returning to confront their oppressors
as U.S. and Allied soldiers. About Face does not focus on the camps, the ghetto uprisings or the victimization
of the Jewish people. Instead, it depicts the uniquely powerful and unexpected experiences of the Jewish
refugees-turned soldiers who fought with distinction. The film features interviews with many famous
personalities including Manfred Gans, Kurt Klein and Henry Kissinger; commentary by Joseph Persico and
Dr. Michael Berenbaum; and an original score composed by John Cale.

One of the most unique features of Judaism is its
invitation to engage in lifelong dialogue with our
sacred texts and traditions. Both scholar and lay
leaders are expected to explore questions the Bible
raises about faith, doubt, loyalty, love, community,
identity and morality. Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg plumbs
the layers of biblical narratives for their insights into
human nature and consciousness. Combining literary
analysis with psychoanalytic thought as well as
rabbinic and Hassidic teachings, Zornberg uncovers
the richness of the Bible and the interplay between
self, family, community and God. Join us for nine
sessions on selected stories from the book of Genesis.

Kolnoa: Israeli Film Series at the JCC
Film: Melting Siberia
Screening followed by Q&A with Ido Haar, the movie’s director.
Saturday, 10/29, 8-10:30 pm (Screening will begin at 8:30 pm)
Ido Haar’s mother was born
in the Soviet Union. She was
still in her mother’s womb
when her father, a highranking officer in the Red
Army, abandoned her mother
and disappeared. Haar, who bears a close resemblance
to his grandfather, decides to locate his lost relative
and arrange to have him meet his daughter for the first
time. The distance between Siberia and Israel, and
father and daughter, is instantly shortened by one telephone call, a dramatic interchange that sets an
inevitable course of events in motion. The film traces
the painful journey from abandonment to reconciliation. The film was screened world wide and enjoyed
international success. Discussion in English.

demonstrating your loyalty and support. Your votes, which have placed us as leaders in nearly every category, tell
us we are achieving what we set out to do, and that means the world to us.”
The JCC Welcomes Aya Shechter as the New Program Director
for the Israel Connection Department
We are pleased to welcome Aya I. Shechter as the new
program director for the Israel Connection Department,
which offers Americans and Israelis in our community
multiple pathways to experience the richness of Israeli
culture. Drawing on her many talents and experiences,
Aya will be expanding our program to allow our members
and guests to share more cultural and social activities to
strengthen their ties to Israel and with each other.
In addition to overseeing programs for our Israeli community, Aya will also be responsible for a brand new JCC initiative - building exceptional programs that meet the needs, interests and lifestyle of adults 55-plus.
A multi-faceted professional, Aya is a B.Sc and M.Sc graduate from Bar Ilan
University in Israel as well as an L.LM graduate of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of
Law at Yeshiva University, where she specialized in Intellectual Property. Aya is currently pursuing a professional certificate in Fundraising from New York University’s
Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising.
As an involved member of her community, Aya served as a lay leader and board
member of many Israel-related non-profits in NYC before becoming the National
Executive Director of Dor Chadash USA, a 14,000 member organization that brings
together American and Israeli Jews to create meaningful connections to Israel and
with each other. While there, she helped institute over 40 cultural, educational,
social, social action and fundraising events per year.
“I am very excited to become a part of the JCC family,” say Aya. “While I enjoyed
working in NYC, I live locally and this is my community and where my 8-monthold daughter is going to grow up. I hope to make the JCC a home for her and all the
Israelis and Americans who love Israel and want to stay connected. I’ve received
nothing but great responses and a warm welcome since arriving here and I am sure
it will be a great experience to work here.”
Please join us in welcoming Aya. She can be reached at 201.408.1427 and will be
available to meet members of the community during the JCC upcoming Open House
on September 18th. For more information on upcoming programs, please see the
Israel Connection listings on page 9, and stay tuned for updates on specialty programs for the new initiative for adults 55-plus.
After finishing her law studies, Aya practiced as an attorney for the law firm
Shiboleth LLP, where she advised individuals, businesses and corporations on intellectual property issues, including trademark, copyright and patent protection.

Annual GOlf Classic
On Monday, July 25, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades held its eleventh annual Golf Classic at an
exciting new location – the Alpine Golf Club in Demarest, New Jersey. The sell-out fundraising event
raised an unprecedented $270,000 to advance one of the JCC’s major missions – to assist children
with physical, emotional and developmental disabilities. We credit our success to the generous
support that poured in from our sponsors, auction contributors, participants, chairs and staff, who
dedicated themselves to making this event such a stellar achievement. Our Dream Raffle featured
a chance to tee off at some of the most exclusive golf courses in the country, and our fabulous
annual auction had attendees bidding on hard-to-get items such as a NFL Meet and Greet, a week
getaway to Beaver Creek, Colorado; dinner for four at Rao’s restaurant, theater tickets, sporting
events, beautiful jewelry and more. As always, the Classic also featured a shotgun start, hole-in-one
competitions, prizes, awards, a 50/50 raffle, wonderful meals and a lavish cocktail reception.

The Golf Classic is one way the JCC raises money each year to support
special services for children in our community. To date, proceeds from
the event have provided summer camping experiences for children with
autism; the chance for children with special needs to participate in our
nursery school and summer camp; the opportunity for developmentally
disabled children and teens to acquire valuable life skills to improve their
daily lives; and the chance for people of all ages with special needs to
participate in Special Games for Special People, a fun-filled day of sports
and camaraderie. We thank everyone who supported our event and
made this possible!

In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives
with author Steven Levy
Monday, January 9, 8 pm
Examining the crossroads of cutting edge physics and
ancient mysticism, Fare Forward is a story about a
family’s search for the things that transcend time.
Gabriella Vogel, a young architecture student, learns
that everything we take for granted about life can
come into question. Are chance encounters the
merging of past and present, and overlaps in art,
religion and science mere accidents?
Wendy Dubow Polins is a writer and architect,
whose life has been shaped by her family’s ties to
Israel. Her grandfather smuggled munitions into
Palestine; her father led international surgical teams during the
Yom Kippur War, and her mother was a founder of the Soviet Jewry movement.
Drawing on unprecedented access to Google’s top
management, from its legendary co-founders on
down, acclaimed technology journalist Steven Levy
tells the inside story of the success, influence, and
ambition of what is arguably the most important
company in the world today – Google, the pioneering search engine that changed the face of the
Internet.
Steven Levy is a senior writer at Wired magazine,
and former senior editor and chief technology
writer at Newsweek. He is the author of several books, most notably Hackers,
a classic account of the early computer era, and Insanely Great, about the
Macintosh computer.

Marc Agronin, M.D., is a board-certified adult and
geriatric psychiatrist currently serving as the Medical Director for Mental Health
and Clinical Research at Miami Jewish Health Systems. A Harvard University graduate with a degree in psychology and philosophy, Dr. Agronin received his medical

Join the Club: How Peer Pressure Can Transform the World
with author Tina Rosenberg
Thursday, February 9, 8 pm
In Join the Club, Tina Rosenberg shows us how we can
transform the troubled world around us by harnessing
the positive power of peer pressure. Used as a “social
cure,” this powerful strategy has successfully overthrown dictators, persuaded teenagers in South Africa
to demand safe sex, helped Black and Latino students
excel in college math classes, and spurred millions to
quit drinking and drugs. Relating stories of peer
power in action, Rosenberg demonstrates that peer
pressure can serve as a powerful form of social
change.
Tina Rosenberg, the winner of a MacArthur Grant,
is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a former member of the Times editorial board. Her book, The Haunted Land, won the
Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

CAPS FOR SALE &

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT –
A MUSICAL
Hudson Vagabond Puppets
Funny, colorful and very large puppets fill the stage with
joy and action. Caps for Sale is a famous monkey tale
with a twist that involves a tinsmith’s pots, a flower
lady’s flowers and tempting items from other peddlers.
In the Three Billy Goats Gruff the Ogre sings a crazy little
rock song on his guitar and the billy goats sing and
dance their way out of trouble and into a world of
happy endings.
An award-winning, sold-out musical from NYC based
on the classic children’s book by Margery Williams
about love and self-esteem. When the well-worn little toy bunny gets into a scrape, toy magic takes
over. We discover that unlike flashy mechanical toys,
this simple little bunny can become real when it is
truly cared for. Both bunny and boy are transformed
by each other’s love. Music by well-known NY composer Jimmy Roberts.

and appropriate instruments accompany the classic
characters, young Peter, his worried grandfather, the
independent cat, and more, as their adventure unfolds.
The young company that brought you Aaron’s Party Under the Sea and The Frog Prince
returns with a new, great musical. A local TV reporter hears about a little shop down a
long windy road where people go for
answers to tricky questions. He discovers a clever boy and girl who solve
amazing riddles. They dazzle everyone

such as nature, people, and architecture. Visually exploring
biblical themes like Adam and Eve, Moses, Yaakov, Yoseph
and Creation of the World, Ksenija’s fascination with trees,
flowers, butterflies and other natural elements dominate
her work. Born and raised in former Yugoslavia, Ksenija
studied art in Belgrade (Serbia), Prague, (Czech Republic)

and Fine Art Printmaking from Pedagogical University of
Krakow in 2003.
Sukkah: Photographs by Suzy Rosenberg
On display October 2-26
Meet the Artist Reception, Sunday, October 9, 1-3 pm
This exhibit is a photographic journey
through the sukkah, inspired by the beautiful
prayer: Ufros aleinu sukkat sh’lomecha, which
translates as “Spread over us the shelter of
your peace.” This exhibit explores not only
the physical construction of the sukkah, but
also the intertwined spiritual essence people
experience when they build and enter the
sukkah with family and friends. These unique
photographs examine the many elements that give a sukkah its identity: structure,
texture, pattern, color, light, and the personal touch of those who build it.
Rosenberg’s work has been exhibited at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the Tenafly
Nature Center, Tenafly Public Library and the Puffin Cultural Center. One of her
recent works also won a UJA photography competition.

become strategic philanthropists, and contribute to a pooled fund that will
support a selected charity. Call Judi Nahary at 201.408.1470.
