Fall 2014 It is truly unbelievable that our 2014
Season is about to come to a close! Saturday,
November 1st will be our final day of the season for
Food and Beverage service. Please call Shelley, Zoe
or Leigh and make your reservations to join us that
weekend!
Thank you for your support of our efforts to “raise
the bar” in our food and beverage program this
year. With guidance from our “very talented” House
Operations & Social Committee and our Board of
Governors, we implemented a number of changes
in an effort to elevate and improve your “Cullasaja
Experience”. We have enjoyed great success with many of those changes and at
the same time acquired some very valuable knowledge to assist with our 2015
planning process.
Earlier this year and just prior to the start of our 2014 season, we were very fortunate
to recruit/hire three “key” individuals to lead our Golf Services program and our
Food & Beverage operations. (Charles Beurmann, Head Golf Professional, Shelley
Walker, Food & Beverage Director and Leigh Coggins, Dining Room Manager)
These three people “hit the ground running” with very little or no returning staff
and/or “institutional memory” to call on. Despite all these adversities, including
relocating their families and pets, their performance has been remarkable and
they are extremely excited about developing and improving their programs and
services for 2015.
2014 Member Satisfaction Survey In early November you will received, via
email, our 2014 Member Satisfaction Survey. The survey can be completed online and will take less than 10 minutes. We encourage both household spouses to
complete the Survey. The Survey is a very valuable tool that we use to gage the
performance and success of our programs and services. Thank you in advance for
taking the time to provide us with your input!
Highlands Christmas Parade – December 6th Don’t miss this exciting
event that takes place at 11:00AM in downtown Highlands! We have formed a
Cullasaja Club and Community Parade Committee and have submitted our “Entry
Forms” to participate in the event. If you are interested in participating in the
Christmas Parade please contact Crystal Corbin or me for more details. Be there
when Santa arrives in Highlands!
Riedel Wine Glass and Year-end Wine Inventory Sale As you may
know, wine is best-enjoyed when it is served in a glass that is specifically designed
for a particular wine variety. Participants at our Riedel Glass and Wine tasting this
year experienced that difference! Riedel has been designing wine glasses that
deliver the best qualities of a particular variety to the correct location on your
palate and to your nose, enhancing both taste and smell. We have the ability to
purchase a commercial grade (dishwasher safe) of these extraordinary glasses
direct from the company. We are pleased to offer them for your enjoyment at a
highly discounted price. They are an excellent gift for family, friends or business
clients. Call Shelly or Leigh for more details. Don’t forget the wine to enjoy with
these glasses. Take advantage of our inventory reduction sale or call Shelley and
place an order for your favorite wine at any time! Wine shipping is subject to State
regulations.
Fall & Winter Golf – Rates, Cart Staging and Course Access As in
the past, our Fall and Winter Guest & Cart fee will be $50.00 per guest. As you know,
we will begin our Golf Shop/Golf Cart Staging and Parking Lot renovation project
in early November. The Golf Parking lot (lower-lot) and the main entrance to the
Golf Course will be closed to Member and Guest traffic during the construction
period. That said, Charles will move his office to the Conference Room located
upstairs from the Golf Shop Lobby. Golf Carts will be staged in the parking lot
of the Activity Center. Guest play registration will be conducted on the “Honor
System” with registration details located on the Golf Cart. A box will be provided in
the lobby of the Activity Center to drop off the Guest Registration papers. The Golf
Course and Golf Practice facility will be accessed through the cart path located
adjacent to, and running behind, the Activity Center. Please use caution on this
path as it is narrow. DO NOT EXIT the Golf Course or the Golf Practice facility using
this cart path as it can only accommodate ONE-WAY TRAFFIC. Please exit the Golf
Course after your round by using the cart path around the 10th green and out
onto Cullasaja Club Drive. Thank you for helping us keep everyone SAFE during
this renovation project.

MALLETS & MARTINI’S | by Terry Fugate
Croquet in Cullasaja
Incredible First Season: Thanks to all of the GREAT Cullasaja members for coming
out on a regular basis and supporting all of our CCA events this year. It seems like
everyone just got here and that we now are already rapidly approaching the end
of this year’s regular season. This has been an incredible year for the growth of our
Croquet program here at Cullasaja. We now have 146 members in the CCA. I think
all of you will agree that there were some nice perks attached to being a member
of the CCA this year. We offered two days of complimentary world-class instruction
and had 78 members take advantage of such clinics at no charge. We also offered
a one-day Rules Seminar, which was also well received, by 70 of our CCA members.
Also included in your CCA membership was the food for the inter-club matches
and also at our weekly Mallets & Martinis. We are also pleased to report that all CCA
members will be invited to our annual Croquet Finale dinner at no cost except for
your open bar bill.
This year during the months of June, July and August we had 1,365 times that
members participated in croquet in one way or another.
Just for your information; plans are being worked together with Tom Nelson on
to “make the court as level as possible” during the off-season. Something that will
make our experience next year even more enjoyable!!!!
CMCA Annual Croquet Tournament: I would like to take this opportunity
to say thank you to the 8 Cullasaja members who volunteered to participate in this
year’s annual tournament. The Chattooga Club in Cashiers hosted this year’s event
and we had all 10 clubs on the Plateau represented in the annual tournament. Our
team ended even stronger than last year’s team in spite of the fact that all of the
other teams also fielded stronger teams. It was a fun-filled but also competitive
round robin event. After all of the final matches and after a recount of the scores
the day after the event, it showed that our team finished in 6th place out of a total
of 10. The first day it was announced that we finished 5th but after the recount it
was announced that we finished 6th.
6
to get you the mallets at a price less than the Internet pricing,
even after the shipping and handling costs are included.
A Special Thanks to everyone for playing that day. I was very
proud of all of you. We are all looking forward to going back
next year and finishing even higher in the standings that time.
Croquet Finale Party: Please make plans now to join us for
a fun-filled evening of croquet followed by dinner at the
clubhouse. All CCA members are asked to join for croquet and
also dinner that evening. It’s been an incredible season so as
we get close to the end of our 2014 season we think you would
like to help us celebrate an incredibly successful first season
for our croquet program here at Cullasaja. All weekly croquet
events will remain in place until late in October. The Lawn
should remain available for play until at least Thanksgiving.
We had some of the members that played most of the winter
months or when they came into town for a few days.
Custom Mallet Fitting: Another service that is available to our
CCA members is custom mallet fitting. We have 3 demo mallets,
so you can pick and choose the one that you like best and I will
tell you what height and length I would recommend for you.
I will place the order for you and assemble the mallet when it
comes in, so all you have to do is just place the order and pick
up your mallet when it arrives. Generally I can have the mallets
in your hands within 3 to 4 weeks at the latest. When you order
through our pro shop you always get a better price than if you
order it yourself off of the Internet. Most of the time we are able
Thursday October 9th “Croquet Finale”
Croquet at 3:00 or 5:00 followed
by dinner at the main clubhouse at 7:00PM
West Palm Beach Croquet School: Next spring we are trying to figure out
the best time for us to take a group down to sunny South Florida for our annual
trip to the National Croquet Center. Dates currently under consideration are March
12th & 13th for a two day Golf Croquet School or perhaps April 13,14 15 or April
15,16,17, so if you think you might be interested just let me know. I will set a date
after I determine how many folks want to go this coming spring. If we go in March
it will only be a two-day School and the group size is limited to a maximum of 16
participants. During the month of April I can take a group as large as we need up
to 56 participants. The School is a great way to refine your skills and I group players
according to their ability. We have several members who went last year who want
to go back again this year but we also have some who have never been before. So
whether you are a novice or an advanced player there are always different strokes
and strategies you can still learn. Please contact me at [email protected]
if you think you might be interested in attending ASAP.

During the weekly Mallets & Martinis on October
2, Cris Hayes did something very, very special;
something that is rather unique in the game. She
made 2 wickets with one shot. She rolled the ball all
the way over the full length of the court.
In golf it would be certainly comparable to a hole in
one, or even a double eagle. Congratulations Cris
Hayes.
As you can see from the picture she and her fellow
players certainly enjoyed and appreciated it

I am so proud to be a part of the Cullasaja
family, thank you for a great season!
Our 2014 season is almost over. We are very sad to say goodbye but have made many
wonderful memories over the last six months! We hope that the seasons ahead are just
as amazing!
The month of September has been a very successful. Our Mixed Member-Guest was
a huge hit with a sold out crowd of 96 participants. I would like to take a moment
and thank our tremendous committee. Special thanks to Bettie & JD Ingram, Linda &
Hines Brannan, Beth & Jeff Elzemeyer and Sammy Smith. The tournament would not
have been a success without them! I would also like to thank Jody & Wood Lovell and
Highlands Sotheby’s for their tournament support.
We are very excited about the plans to create a more attractive and inviting golf shop.
The renovations will truly enhance the overall golf experience to all our members and
guests. During construction this offseason our golf staff will still be available for all of
your wants and needs.
With the implementation of our Mill River retail program we have seen a huge
improvement in our golf shop customer base. Please feel free to continue to utilize this
amazing program while you are away this winter. We will be happy to order and drop
ship anything you wish this offseason. The holidays are right around the corner and I
would hate the idea of anyone paying outrageous retail prices!!
Our first ever Saturday Night Shoot-Out was a huge success. We had 15 teams
participate and the competition was very tight. Unfortunately darkness forced us into
only playing seven of the nine holes. Hugh Dillingham partner Frank Ellerbe finished
third place, Tom Wade partner Bob Morgan and Gil Glover partner Jim Bryson tied for
first place. Congratulations to all who played. Come out and participate in our Saturday
Night Shoot-Out’s every month on our 2015 schedule!

We are still here
beautiful than seeing Cullasaja Club covered in a blanket of snow.
How often do our Members think of returning to the mountains in
the winter? Everyone has thought about popping up for a holiday
or just a long weekend, but simply didn’t know what is available.
Although some of our favorite options are weather dependent,
most things in town are open and there are activities to do in the
mountains during the winter months.
If planning a visit during the winter months, please let us know
ahead of time so we can accommodate any needs that you
may have. Call or e-mail the Activity Center and let us arrange
something to make your trip more interesting. We would love to
see you.
Your Activity Center Staff are available year round to help you
with massage, training, and other services normally provided
at the Activity Center. If planning a family vacation to bring the
grandkids up to see snow, consider booking a few massages, or
scheduling an exercise class, or a hike. The spin class runs every
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through the winter so all are
welcome to just pop in and join the few who reside here year
round.
In the past, we have arranged hike’s for Member’s who had brought
groups up. With proper notification and planning, the winter
weather can sometimes be quite mild, which really lends itself
well to a walk in the woods. Views can be much more expansive
when the leaves are off the trees. When we do experience snow
fall, the HOA Team does a great job removing it, making the roads
quite accessible very soon after the snow falls. Nothing is more

Wow what a great season! Thanks to all of our great Cullasaja Members for coming
out and supporting our tennis program again this year. As of this writing we have had
almost 500 hours more play than through this same time last year. This year we will finish
the 6 month season with over 4,000 hours of play. We have been able to accomplish
this even with some of our regulars that are out nursing injuries this season. It is great
to see some of the young vertical Members and their children coming out to play. This
year we also had more juniors for our junior clinics than we have had in several years.
The golf/tennis junior clinics were very popular so that will probably continue again
next year.
New Tennis Champions Crowned: We would like to thank everyone for
supporting our Tennis Championship this year. We would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate all of our Champions for their hard fought victories this year.
Ladies Doubles Champions: Margi Eichman & Laura Schroeders
Men’s Doubles Champions: Rick Eichman & Larry Ainsworth
Mixed Doubles Champions: Larry Ainsworth & Margi Eichman
Make plans now to join us for our last major event of the 2014 tennis season, the
Tennis Finale & Luncheon. The tennis courts will remain open through the month of
November weather permitting. Obviously we have many more weeks of great tennis
to be played but we have to find a time earlier in the month of October to have our
Tennis Finale mixer.
Tennis Finale & Luncheon
Saturday October 11th 10:00AM
Immediately following the tennis round robin, we will all go up to the Clubhouse for
a delicious luncheon prepared by Chef Marie. All tennis players as well as non-playing
spouses are invited to come to the luncheon that day.

WGA | News
What a great 2014 season for the ladies of the WGA! Tuesday
play days, tournaments, Interclub games and a super fun
Member/Guest made for a full season of golf. A huge thank
you goes to the 18 WGA board members for all their efforts in
the details!
Diane Warren was crowned our Club Champion. Cullasaja Cup
Flight Winners were Bobbie Carey (18) and Dorothy Lyles (9).
The Blue Team won this year’s Red and Blue tournament so
next year the Red team will be making the hors oeuvres for
the cocktail party!
The WGA finished up the 2014 season as it begun with a
scramble and festive luncheon organized by Tracy Shawhan
and Debbie Fulton. They definitely outdid themselves! Kudos!
The Special Awards are always a luncheon highlight. This year,
in the 18 Hole division, Betsy Butler won the Most Improved
golfer and Nelly Rice, the Ringer Award. The 9 Hole division
winner of the Most Improved was Tracy Shahwan and the
Ringer, Sammy Smith.
Awards were given for all the major events and tournaments
that were held during the season. The teams of Peggy Turner
and Marianne Lassiter (18 Holers) and Tracy Shawhan and
Debbie Fulton (9Holers) won the Member/Member. The Laurel
Cup was won by Bertie Fransen, and Shelia Broughton,18 and
9 Hole divisions respectively. The President’s Cup was awarded
to Diane Warren (18 Holer) and Sammy Smith (9 Holer).
All in all we couldn’t have asked for better weather, a more
beautiful golf course (thanks Tom Nelson) and more congenital
golfing partners. And we would be remiss if we didn’t give a
great big hand to Charles Beurmann and his staff!
Mountain memories were definitely made!

History of Wine in America: Part One
In the early 9th century, the Viking Leiv Eriksson landed at
L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. He was the
first European to definitively set foot upon the North American
continent and christened his discovery “Vinland.” This name
could be a possible reference to the meadows before him,
or as a tribute to the wealth of native grapevines. Several
species of wild grapevine awaited the first colonists of North
America, including Vitis labrusca (the Concord and Catawba
grapes), Vitis rotundifolia (the Scuppernong grape), and Vitis
aestivalis (the Norton grape). Vitis vinifera, the source of fine
wine grapes were not found. Following Columbus’ journey in
1492 and the subsequent rush to explore and colonize the
New World, European colonists attempted to produce wines
from the native grapes. Most were generally repelled by the
native grapes’ inherently foxy odors and turned to imported
vines.
The earliest record of vinifera vine plantings on the East Coast
was a result of an interesting Virginia law passed in 1619. The
law required every male colonist at Jamestown to plant and
tend a minimum of ten vines. Unfortunately, this experiment
ended in failure as the European vines succumbed to new
vine diseases and the phylloxera pest. This caused the interest
in winemaking in the British Colonies of America to dwindle
and cider, beer and whiskey became the alcoholic beverages
of choice in the 18th century.
Thomas Jefferson, a gourmand devoted to the best wines
of Bordeaux, showed relentless enthusiasm for the vine.
Jefferson viewed wine as a mark of genteel society, and “the
only antidote to the bane of whiskey.” He planted vinifera at
his Virginia estate, so that the young country might produce
its own fine wine, asserting its self-sufficiency in the process.
Unfortunately, his efforts (along with those of George
Washington) were met with continual failure, and more than
thirty years of vineyard cultivation ended without a single
bottle of wine. The Founding Fathers had to settle for the best
of Europe, as the wines of France graced state tables, echoing
Benjamin Franklin’s remark: Wine is “proof that god loves us.”
The Mission grape was introduced to Mexico in the early
1500s by Spanish settlers and made its way to Rio Grande
settlements in present-day Texas and New Mexico as early
as 1629. Franciscan monks then brought the Mission grape
to what would become the state of California. They helped
establish vineyards at each of their historic missions along
the West Coast and in 1783, Franciscans at the San Juan
Capistrano Mission produced California’s first wine from the
13
| Hot off the Plate
grape. In 1823, the Franciscans built the San Francisco de
Solano Mission, the last of the missions and the northern
terminus of the Spanish Empire in North America. This site
is now occupied by Sonoma’s town square. By 1839, George
Yount had arrived in Napa as the first American settler to set
foot in the valley, and had planted its first vineyard.
The annexation of California from Mexico in 1847 brought
a wave of prospectors, American soldiers, and pioneers
to San Francisco Bay, and wine production increased
correspondingly. The influx of settlers brought the Hungarianborn, self-styled “Count” Agoston Haraszthy to Sonoma in
1849, where he founded Buena Vista, one of California’s
oldest commercial wineries. Haraszthy introduced more
than 300 varietals to the state, collected as vine cuttings
during his European travels. He has been dubbed the “father
of California wine.”
After working for Haraszthy, Charles Krug moved in 1861
to St. Helena in Napa Valley and founded his eponymous
winery which is the oldest in the valley. Jacob Schram built
Schramsberg in 1862. Beringer, Napa’s oldest continuously
operating winery, was established in 1876, and the Finnish
immigrant Gustav Niebaum founded the legendary
Inglenook Winery in 1879. By the last decade of the 19th
century, Napa Valley had nearly 20,000 acres under vine and
Sonoma Valley had over 22,000. (Sourced From The Guild of
Sommeliers, 2014)

to discuss:
THE LADY
IN GOLD
a novel By
Anne-Marie O’Connor
The spellbinding story, part fairy
tale, part suspense, of Gustav Klimt’s
Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, one
of the most emblematic portraits of
its time; of the beautiful, seductive
Viennese salon hostess who sat for
it; the notorious artist who painted
it; the now vanished turn-of-thecentury Vienna that shaped it; and
the strange twisted fate that befell it.
We’ll meet in the
Clubhouse Library:
Monday
October 13th
2:00 pm
