School will resume Monday, March 28th. Have a wonderful break! Read to Feed Thank you, Westside Community for your open arms in embracing Read to Feed this year! It was a huge success and we want to share with you our final numbers. Our school goal for minutes read during the month of February was 200,000 minutes. We exceeded that goal and read 261,597 minutes! Along with reading, our students raised an astonishing $6,845.25! This spring, Heifer International has a $50,000 matching gift challenge that will match every dollar raised by Read to Feed students and classrooms around the country. That means Read to Feed students have TWICE the impact as we work together toward our vision of a world without hunger and poverty. The money we have raised here at Westside will be increased to almost $13,000! This will help families around the world to create a sustainable income to provide food for their families, money to pay for schooling, and other resources to pull themselves out of poverty. If you would like to learn more about Heifer International or Read to Feed, please visit www.heifer.org . Thank you again for believing in your child and encouraging them to be a global citizen! We will begin taking calls for appointments on Monday, March 28, 2016. If you have a child or know of one that will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 and will be attending Kindergarten next year, please see the flyer on our website for more information! Classroom Request forms for the 2016‐17 school year Parent/Teacher Request Forms are now available. Each year a critical part of our planning for the new school year is the placement of students in various classrooms. This process is involved and elaborate, with a variety of staff members providing input. Our goal is to develop a heterogeneous mixture of students in every classroom, taking into consideration academic achievement, gender equity,social/emotional development and special needs of specific students. Traditionally, parents have been allowed to request specific classroom placements for their children for the new school year. We would like to continue this process. We will do our best to honor parent requests, but the final decision for classroom placement will rest with the building principal. A reminder that we offer a “looping” option at K & 1 and Gr. 2 & 3. If you need more information please contact the school office. At times, students who are in a looping classroom do need to be moved to another classroom the next year if it “wasn’t the right fit”. However, in general, once a child is in a looping classroom, the intent is to stay there. To request a specific classroom, please pick up the request form from the office, complete it, and return it to the office by April 8th. A strong educational rationale must be included for consideration. Summer School Enrichment Registration Registration for Summer School Enrichment classes is now active online. Eating garden fresh food is not only delicious, it's nutritious. Gardening is a great family activity that will bring fresh produce or herbs right to your kitchen. If you have space for a small backyard garden, try growing a few vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and herbs. You can even plant tomatoes in containers and watch them grow or try growing some herbs in small pots on a windowsill where they get plenty of light.
