The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat,
and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. The flu vaccine is currently being offered to residents and staff. As a loved one of a resident, please get your flu shot. Remember if you are feeling sick, please stay home and visit your loved one when you are feeling
better. A separate attachment will be sent out for more information about the
flu vaccine.

Pastoral Care Corner
Pastoral Care Week, October 16 – 22, celebrates those who provide spiritual support to others… in
specialized settings such as hospitals, prisons, businesses, industries, long-term care facilities, pastoral counseling centers, hospices, military settings, skilled nursing facilities...throughout
the world.
This year’s theme, “Spiritual Resilience,” acknowledges the role of Chaplains
and Pastoral Counselors to support the spiritual resilience or growth of it in those
we serve. Spiritual Resilience represents one’s ability to navigate through, or recover from, life’s most challenging moments... It also represents the individual’s
ability to gain, maintain or revise a sense of purpose and meaning, relationships,
connections to the sacred, nature, and understanding of themselves and the world
around them.
Many institutions will celebrate Pastoral Care Week by honoring the work and
gifts of pastoral/spiritual care givers locally and internationally, as well as the
spiritual needs of those who serve.
The Holy Redeemer Health system has provided for a robust program of pastoral and spiritual care to serve
our patients, residents, staff, families and community.
Our Pastoral Care team here at Holy Redeemer Lafayette includes: Rabbi Reuben Israel Abraham, Rev.
Rhonda J. Cushman, Deacon Jim Garvey, Fr. Timothy Judge, Fr. Laurence Gleason, and Pastoral Intern Clare
Tomkins; along with many wonderful volunteers.
We are here for you!
To honor the ministries of our Pastoral Care Department during Pastoral Care Week, the Jewish Culture Society has generously decided to open up the Sukkoth Luncheon on October 19 to everyone, of all faiths, without requiring membership in the Society.
Reservations for the luncheon will be taken on Thursday October 13th.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. William Hoffman to Holy Redeemer Lafayette

The bright orange color of pumpkins is a giveaway that pumpkins are loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene.
The top pumpkin production states are Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California.
Pumpkin seeds can be roasted as a snack. Pumpkins are typically used to make soups, pies
and breads but can be included in a variety of dishes.
Pumpkins contain potassium, Vitamin A and are 90% water.
The largest pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and weighed over 350
pounds. It used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 12 dozen eggs and took
six hours to bake.
Pumpkins range in size from less than a pound to over 1,000 pounds. The largest pumpkin
ever grown weighed 1,140 pounds.

Introducing the new 2017 Dining Experience Program:
Heirloom-The Heirloom Dining Event Series will feature different residents and their favorite “heirloom” recipes each month. With recipes being
a thread that connect generations – and precious heirlooms of their own –
we view them as a window to preserve heritage and tradition. Family recipes elicit memories of where we’ve been and allow us to leave a legacy for
our loved ones. During Heirloom events, residents will journey through
time, reliving special moments through their recipes amongst family and friends. Stay tuned for more information and highlights of the upcoming featured recipes.
Please contact Brianna Koruba at (484) 326-1666 If you have a great recipe for us!

Medicare Open Enrollment
What Will You Find During Medicare Open Enrollment?
October 15 - December 7
Your health needs change from year to year. And, your health plan may change its benefits and costs each
year too. That's why it’s important to review your Medicare choices each fall. Compare your current plan
to new options and see if you can lower your costs or find a plan that better suits your needs. Open Enrollment is the one time of year when ALL Medicare beneficiaries can see what new benefits options
Medicare has to offer and make changes to their coverage.
Whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll still have many of the same
benefits and security you have now, including:

Certain preventive benefits – including certain cancer screenings – are available at no cost to you
when provided by qualified and participating health professionals. The annual wellness visit lets you
sit down with your doctor to discuss your health care needs and the best ways to stay healthy.

Medicare will notify you about plan performance and the ability to use its online Plan Finder to compare and enroll in quality plans.

In 2016, if you reach the “donut hole” in Medicare’s prescription drug benefit, you’ll save 55 percent
on covered brand-name drugs and see increased savings on generic drugs while in the donut hole.
It’s worth it to take the time to review and compare your Medicare coverage options, but you don’t have
to do it alone. Medicare is available to help.

Visit Medicare.gov/find-a-plan to compare your current coverage with all of the options that are
available in your area, and enroll in a new plan if you decide to make a change.

Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) 24-hours a day/7 days a week to find out more about your
coverage options. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

Review the Medicare & You 2016 handbook. It’s mailed to people with Medicare in September and is
also available online at Medicare.gov.

If you have limited income and resources, you may be able to get Extra Help paying your prescription
drug coverage costs. For more information, visit socialsecurity.gov/i1020 or call Social Security at 1800-772-1213. TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778.

Get one-on-one help from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Visit Medicare.gov/contacts or call 1-800-MEDICARE to get the phone number.
