Radio heroes 2012: Elka, Nyusha, Eva vs. Vika, Stas, Marina
The portal tophit.ru has been thoroughly tracking the success of artists and their producers
and the attitude of the audience to them and radiostations, analyzed tendencies and took part in their
formation. On January 5, 2013 tophit.ru published 16 final yearly
yearly radio charts, including Yearly General
Top Hit 200 and Yearly General Artist Top 100.
The duo Elka and Nyusha reigned on radio air 2012. The 6 songs of each of the artists were
rotated during the year, which sounded over 2.100.000 times in tote, and their main radio hits – “Okolo
tebya” (Elka) and “Vospominanie” (Nyusha) – sounded over 1.000.000! It allowed the ladies to win in
several nominations at once, according

the fact that she almost didn’t yield to

There’s no precedent for that both artists have almost
almost exactly repeated their achievements of
the last year but one, i.e. they have been topping radio charts with identical rotation results two years
running.
Eva Polna,, whose 2 tracks sounded

700.000 times on air for the year, also joined the list of the

st singers. The result was Eva’s breakthrough with 74 positions up on the chart and the deserved 3rd
place on the list of the most frequently rotated on radio Russian artists.
The last year was also success for the band Vintage, 6 tracks of which sounded over 540.000
times on air. The result is the honorary 6th place on Yearly General Artist Top 100.
Polina Gagarina came back to TOP 10 of the best Russian artists on radio – two hits of hers
sounded over 400.000 times within the year of 2012.

her to take the 17th place of the most frequently

As for the men, the absolute leaders of the last year became different in performance style
Grigory Leps (5 tracks, 656.000 times on air, 4th place on Top Russian Artists chart – 14 positions up in
comparison to the previous year) and DJ Smash (6
6 tracks, 550.000 times on air, 5th place on Top Russian
Artists chart – 55 positions up in comparison to the previous year).
In 2012 Dima Bilan managed to stay on TOP 20 of the most frequently rotated Russian artists
but went 8 positions down in comparison to the previous year, having taken the 12th place on the list.
The airs’ quantity is less successful this time – Bilan’s hits sounded 400.000 times on air, what is double
less as compared with 2011, when Dima played 800.000 times on radio.
2012 appeared breakthrough for JeeGun (7 tracks, 400.000 times on air, 11th place on Top
Russian Artists chart), Irakli (6 tracks, 393.000 times on air, 13th place on Top Russian Artists chart),
Denis Maidanov (3 tracks, 250.000 times on air, 22nd place on Top Russian Artists chart), Dominik Joker
(3 tracks, 200.000 times on air, 29th place on Top Russian Artists chart).
Vika Daineko (90.000 times on air, 53 positions down) and Zhanna Friske (62.000 times on air,
42 positions down) showed rather modest rotation

But for MakSim the radio air 2012 appeared especially unlucky. The singer went from the 7th
place down to the 92nd one on Artists Top 100 chart of 2012. But the tracks’ rotation losses strike most
of all. During the year the presence of MakSim’s

times on air in the last year but one to 48.000 times on 2012 radio air.

It was only Stas Mikhailov,
Mikhailov, who competed with MakSim in speed of rolling down from the
popularity Olympus. Last year he sounded not over 14.000 times on air, and, consequently, quietly and
unnoticeably left Top 100 Russian artists.
Besides, the music editors and program directors didn’t manage to escape a scandalous failure
in rotation of Ivan Dorn’s single “Stytsamen”.. In the year of 2012 this hit sounded everywhere, except
for the radiostations. Not very long, since April to July, the track was rotated in Moscow, whereas
regional radiostations didn’t notice it at all. As a result, it’s the 81st place of the song on Yearly Moscow
chart and 70th place of Dorn himself
hims on TOP 100 Russian artists. Meanwhile, Dorn was everywhere
recognized as a breakthrough of the year, nominated for Muz
Muz TV Award, won ZD Award and RU.TV
Award. The artist was welcomed everywhere and all of a sudden became nearly the most expensive
singer of Russia.

Record labels 2012: who is most successful in placing music on radio air?

In the year of 2012 the Russian record labels, producers, music publishing houses and
subsidiaries of foreign labels kept on searching for opportunities of realizing their business interests in
new realias.
Just one year later the company Universal Music Russia, last-years
years-leader, came back to the
first places in all the significant categories. In 2012 it was UMR that became an absolute leader in the
quantity of rotated on air tracks of its (4.028.000) as well as the effectiveness of placing its music
content on radio air. In the context
context of the latter statement the unprecedented quantity of airs
(100.000),, which fell on almost every placed on radio track of UMR lately, is noteworthy. Besides,
within 2012 the highest number and, particularly, 23 hits of Universal appeared and kept remaining

more professional level of work of Universal H&R office in Russia.
According to the gross measures, in 2012 Universal shares its leading position with the Russian
subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment. It concerns the quantity of the

throughout 2012 (246) and the number of these tracks` airs (2.640.0000).

“attack” led to ineffectiveness of placing content on radio (11.000 airs per track).
In 2013 we`re
e`re going to see and realize,, what will be going on in the Russian subsidiaries of
majors in connection with sharing the business and sell of EMI to the two competitors - Universal and
Sony. The company Universal is one of the most prominent record labels in the world that has already
managed to work up 27% of the global music market. The assets of EMI will be added by 9% more.
Sony, in its turn, will become one of the greatest holders of copyright in the world, increasing its
catalogue almost threefold - up to over 2 millions of music compositions.
As for company Gala Records/EMI,
Records/EMI, the last but one year` leader on the market of music
content placement on the Russian radio air, the company managed to hold its own partly throughout
2012. Gala Records, for instance, appeared the second
second great provider of local content to radiostations,
having placed 42 Russian tracks on radio air.
In the year of 2012 the company First Music Publishing (PMI) strengthened its position as a
serious player on the Russian content market. In 2012 PMI` tracks

One of the most painful and widely-discussed
widely discussed in professional circles topics of 2012 was the
language proportions on
n music radio air. We also bring up this issue in our every-year reports,
presenting statistical information about the ratio of Russian and all the other music on air of
radiostations in Moscow and Russia in tote.
This year we considered it possible to include the results of research, held by us on request of
some rightholders, tophit.ru partners, into the annual report.

Anticipating questions from broadcasters, we mark that the summery data, published below
has been received on the basis of the generally available information. The target of the present
publication as well all the previous ones of the kind is to pass a simple idea to the top-managers

can effectively compete with foreign broadcasters for attention of the Russian audience on the

can serve as a clear proof of the fact.

and RF regional radiostation. Hence the language proportions of music content in relation to the radio
audience in a certain territory can significantly differ from those presented.
