Preliminary Results of Birth and Death Statistics in 2016 In 2016, the number of live births was 406.3 thousand persons, which dropped by 32.1 thousand persons (-7.3%) from 2015. ○ The number of live births declined by 32.1 thousand persons (-7.3%) from 438.4 thousand persons in 2015 to 406.3 thousand persons in 2016. ○ The crude birth rate (the number of live births per 1,000 population) stood at 7.9 persons in 2016, which fell by 8.1 percent from 2015. ○ The total fertility rate (the number of births that a woman would have if she experienced the current age specific birth rates throughout her childbearing years) marked 1.17 persons in 2016, which fell by 0.07 (-5.6%) from 1.24 persons in 2015. ○ The fertility rates for women aged 34 or less showed a drop. The fertility rates for women aged 35 or more showed a rise. ○ The average age of mothers was 32.4 years. Old mothers aged 35 or more occupied 26.3 percent of the total mothers. ○ The sex ratio at birth (number of male live births per 100 female live births) marked 105.0 persons. The sex ratio at birth for the third child or more recoded 107.4 persons. ○ As for total fertility rates by province, Sejong (1.82 persons), Jeonnam (1.47 persons) and Jeju (1.43 persons) marked high figures. In the meantime, Seoul (0.94 person) and Busan (1.10 persons) marked low figures.
