This is the first hybrid blanket flower with a controlled plant habit and prolific flowering. The 3-inch daisy-like flowers and globeshaped seed heads offer a superior presentation of color that continues throughout the summer. The neat, mounded plants are adaptable to smaller gardens or any type of containers. ■ ‘DOUBLE ZAHARA CHERRY’ ZINNIA. This interspecific cross between zinnia species is resistant to leaf spot and mildew diseases. Growers can easily produce the flowering plants for spring bedding without the fear of plant loss due to these two diseases. Recommended for 4-inch pots or larger, the handsome symmetrical dark green plants produce fully double 2 ½ -inch blooms. Growing in a sunny garden, the plant will mature at about 12 inches tall and wide. It is heat tolerant in the garden. Seed can be sown indoors or in greenhouse six to 10 weeks before transplanting into garden soil. All zinnias prefer warm soil and growing conditions. ■ ‘CAJUN BELLE’ PEPPER. Both sweet and savory, the fruits look like small bell peppers. Early to mature, look for mature green peppers 60 days after transplanting into the garden. When left on the plant, fruit will change color from green to scarlet and finish red. Sow seeds indoors for 6 to 8 weeks before last frost date. Peppers are native to tropical America so maintain warm temperatures for maximum growth. ■ ‘SHINY BOY’ WATERMELON. Judges favored its sweet tropical flavor and crisp texture. The globe-shaped melon can grow to 20 pounds or more. It can be grown vertically, so a large yard for a vegetable garden is not needed. ‘Shiny Boy’ ripens earlier than other varieties of watermelon and can grow successfully in any geographic region with warm summer growing conditions. Seeds should be sown directly into peat pots filled with soilless mix that has been well-watered and allowed to drain. Cover with and maintain a temperature of 75 degrees. Germination will occur within two weeks. These new AAS winners are be available in seed catalogs as well as some nurseries. Information about current and past AAS winners, is available on the Web at www.all-americaselections.org. HG ‘Shiny Boy’ won a taste test against other watermelons because judges liked its sweet tropical flavor and crisp texture. It’s also an early ripener.
