Rural Property Addressing Program - Road Renaming
In accordance with Section 219 of the Local Government Act 1999, Council, under delegated authority, is amending the names of the following sections of roads:

Ranger Road, Penfield
Short Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway (NEXY). There is another break in Short Road where a railway/freight
terminal has been constructed. The southern end of Short Road between the
Northern Expressway and the railway/freight terminal will be renamed.
Samuel Short was a mail driver and district ranger in the area.
Jarmyn Road, Waterloo Corner
Short Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. There is another break in Short Road where a railway/freight terminal
has been constructed. The section of Short Road between Mill Road and the
railway/freight terminal will be renamed.
George Jarmyn was a ranger from Virginia at the same time as Samuel
Short in 1887.
Parpunta Road,
Penfield Gardens / Virginia
Womma Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Womma Road on the western side of the Northern
Expressway, between NEXY & the railway line (just over Gawler Road) will be
renamed.
The name Parpunta means “plains” and is an Indigenous synonym for
“Wama” which means “plain”. The current name “Womma” is a
contemporary derivation of the name “Wama”. The City of Playford
acknowledges the significance of this name to the Kaurna people, who
are the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains of South Australia.
Lovey Road, Penfield
Womma Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Womma Road between the Heaslip Road roundabout
and NEXY will be renamed.
Benjamin Heaslip (local landowner whom Heaslip Road is named after)
had a daughter named Lavinia (Lovey).
Vickery Road, Virginia
Huxtable Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Huxtable Road on the western side of the Northern
Expressway between NEXY & King Road will be renamed.
George Huxtable married Mary Ann Vickery.
Taylors Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Taylors Road on the southern side of the Northern
Taylors Road, Waterloo Corner Calvengrove Road, Waterloo Corner
Expressway between NEXY & Pt Wakefield Road (road does not connect to Pt
Wakefield Road) will be renamed.
The Taylors family farm was called Calvengrove.
Mill Road, Waterloo Corner
When Mill Road South access was constructed, the intersections at Mill Road and
Mill Road/Taylors Road were modified from T-junctions to smooth curve bends,
Calvengrove Road, Waterloo Corner resulting in one continuous road. As a result of community feedback, it has been
determined that these sections of road should have one name. The section of Mill
Road between Taylors Road and Mill Road South will be renamed.
The Taylors family farm was called Calvengrove.

Argent Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Argent Road on the northern side of the Northern
Expressway between NEXY & Petherton Road will be renamed.
First settler John Argent married Fanny Laxton.
Robert Road, MacDonald Park
Petherton Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Petherton Road on the western side of the Northern
Expressway between NEXY & Robert Road (at the Heaslip Road intersection) will
be renamed.
This then continues on the connecting road name which is already
named Robert Road.

Fradd Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Fradd Road on the western side of the Northern
Expressway between NEXY & Heaslip Road will be renamed.
John Fradd married Ellen Watts.
Hillier Road, Angle Vale
Eliza Road, Angle Vale
Hillier Road is divided in sections as a result of the construction of the Northern
Expressway. The section of Hillier Road on the western side of the Northern
Expressway between NEXY & Riverbanks Road will be renamed.
George Hillier arrived on the ship Eliza in 1840. He also named one of
his daughters Eliza as well.
Moloney Road, Virginia
Timms Road, Virginia
Moloney Road is permanently divided by a road closure at the railway crossing near
Penfield Road. The smaller section of Moloney Road between the railway line and
Old Port Wakefield Road will be renamed.
William Ridgway, who was a pioneer of mixed farming in the Virginia and
Gawler River area and was amongst the first agriculturalists to run
sheep, married Susannah Timms.
Penfield Road, Penfield
Argent Road, Penfield
Penfield Road has been separated by Heaslip Road, near the RAAF base due to
modifications to the Heaslip Road / Penfield Road intersection. The section of
Penfield Road near the RAAF base will be renamed Argent Road which will then
continue to the existing Argent Road.
Argent Road will then continue on around the corner to Heaslip Road
making one continuous road.
Davoren Road,
Penfield Gardens
There are several sections of road named Davoren Road from Coventry Road,
Ransomes Road, Penfield Gardens Davoren Park to Angle Vale Road, Penfield Gardens. The section of Davoren Road
between Angle Vale Road and Short Road will be renamed.

Hodgson Road, Penfield Gardens
There are several sections of road named Davoren Road from Coventry Road,
Davoren Park to Angle Vale Road, Penfield Gardens. The section of Davoren Road
between Short Road and Broadacres Road will be renamed.
Members of the Hodgson family are buried in the Angle Vale Methodist
Cemetery and lived around the Gawler/Angle Vale area from the 1880’s.

Buckby Road, Penfield Gardens
There are several sections of road named Davoren Road from Coventry Road,
Davoren Park to Angle Vale Road, Penfield Gardens. The section of Davoren Road
between Heaslip Road and Broadacres Road will be renamed.
Several members of the Buckby family are buried in the Zoar Bible
Christian Cemetery in Penfield and they lived in the Penfield area dating
back to the 1880’s.
There are several sections of road named Davoren Road from Coventry Road,
Davoren Park to Angle Vale Road, Penfield Gardens. The small section of Davoren
Road between Andrews Road and closed road (near Eton Drive) will be renamed.
Named after the Smithfield Magazine Area which is an integral part of
the former munitions factory built at Salisbury during the Second World
War for the production of ammunition – building no’s 29 & 33 still remain
in the MacDonald Park area and have been placed on the State
Heritage Register.
Carmelo Road, Buckland Park
Park Road is divided in 2 sections by Port Wakefield Road. The section of Park
Road between Port Wakefield Road and Beagle Hole Road will be renamed.
Carmelo is a variety of tomato which is grown in glasshouses in the
area following a program conducted in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s
to improve competitiveness of the industry against outdoor grown
Queensland tomatoes.
Bevan Road, Virginia
Supple Road is divided in 2 sections by Port Wakefield Road. The section of Supple
Road between Angle Vale Road and where it travels (and stops) alongside Port
Wakefield Road will be renamed.
The Bevan family started construction of the dirt speedway track in
Virginia in 1968, which was known as the Virginia Fairgrounds
Speedway when it opened in 1969.
Dawkins Road, Penfield Gardens
There is an unnamed Public Road off Carclew Road running adjacent to Winifred
Road. A name will be assigned to this unnamed road.
The Dawkins family established extensive farms in the early 19 th
century in the Gawler River area and is credited with developing the
Poll-Dorset breed of sheep, which is one of Australia’s most important
sheep meat breeds.
Pratt Road, Virginia
A new access road was created on the northern side of the Virginia Gardens
Residential Park due to the closure of access from King Road to Port Wakefield
Road. This road was not allocated a name at the time it was created and so a name
will be assigned to this unnamed road.
An early settler to that area was John Pratt. Born in Northampton
England, he arrived in SA on the ship ‘British Sovereign’. He had a son
Arthur who married Mary Ann Baker, and had a property in the local
area named Fairview Farm.
