Solution
In a grocery store there is a moving conveyor belt and on that belt there is a
remote controlled car which is driving in the opposite direction. On that car is
an ant which is walking in the same direction as the belt. If the ant travels at a
speed which is 1 ft/min slower than the conveyer belt and the car travels 1.5
times faster than the conveyor belt, how quickly is the ant walking if in relation to
the room it is not moving at all?
Solution:
Let the ant speed be given as a, the car speed be given as c, and the belt speed be given as b.
We have 3 equations:
which gives:
(
)
(
so the ant travels 1 foot per minute.
