HAZELWOOD CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM
Dear Parents
We have been blessed with some wonderful weather over the last few days. The boys have definitely been
enjoying the sunshine, although the cross country runners looked a little redder than usual as they returned
after their excursions.
I have just come back from the annual IAPS Conference for Prep School Heads, which took place this year in
Birmingham. There was a good range of speakers and seminars including ones on the future of ICT, changes
to the inspection framework and building relationships. In the build-up to the Olympics next year we also had
an inspiring talk from David Hemery, winner of the gold medal for the 400ms Hurdles at the Mexico Olympics
of 1968, who spoke about the importance of supportive parents in the lives of great sports men and women
he had interviewed.
We had the King’s House Triathlon last Sunday. Local schools (both state and independent) participate in the
event which takes place at the Old Deer Park. Mr Byrne has run this for several years now and the numbers
taking part keeps growing. There were some very impressive performances from the children. Well done to
everyone who took part and thank you to all who helped with the event.
Another highlight of the week was the Year 7 trip to the Globe Theatre on Wednesday. Inspired by this I have
chosen the theme of Shakespeare for this week’s quiz. Well done to Max Diamond in 6O who was last week’s
winner.
You will find a copy of the next academic year term dates for 2012-13 in your sons pouch. Please avoid taking
children out of school during term time. We have published the dates early to help with this.
Finally, if driving to school, please park safely and considerately. We have had a complaint from a resident of
Charmouth Court. This is a private block of flats and parents should not be parking in their car park. I would
be grateful if you would be mindful of this.
Congratulations for Distinctions this week go to Marcus Duncomb, Thomas McGowan, Freddie Chapman,
James Silver, Thomas Rejwan, William Bolitho, Luke Parsons, Lucas Hutton, Charlie Pilcher, Sam Edwards,
Charlie de Waal, Max Vallance, Cameron Barclay and Jack Wells who each have one Distinction. Benjy
McGowan has two Distinctions and Henry Benett has three. Well done!

KING’S HOUSE TRIATHLON
Our annual triathlon goes from strength to strength with 95 pupils from 7 different schools entering this
year. As ever the weather was kind to us as wave after wave we set off in the Pools on the Park outdoor
swimming pool starting with the U9 girls. The various age groups had different length swims but all cycled
then ran a complete circuit of the Old Deer Park with the U13s riding an extra bike circuit for good measure.
The event was very hotly contested this year with every single school winning either an individual medal or a
team trophy. I was delighted that, after a lean few years at triathlon, our U9 boys were convincing winners of
the U9 team trophy (Turley, White & Slot). Other King’s House winners were Felix Boardman who won
bronze in the U11 boys category and medallists Neale, Fulford and MacKenzie who were the top 3 home in the
King’s House internal U13 race. Well done to all who took part and my thanks also to the many staff
volunteers. Mr Byrne
HAZELWOOD CROSS-COUNTRY RELAYS
King’s House Senior Department took 6 teams to the annual Hazelwood Cross-Country Relays on Monday. The
competition was fierce and the hill seemed steeper than ever but the King’s House boys ran fast despite the
strength-sapping heat. Our U9 A-team finished a credible 5th out of the 15 competing teams with some speedy
running from Thomson, Mischker, Luckman and McGowan. Equally impressive was our U13 A-team which
also finished a fine 5th with Wells, Neale, Slot and Elmitt scorching to some fast times. In particular, Ivo Slot
posted one of the fastest laps of the day! A big well-done to all who competed. Mr Shore.
