How relatedness is determined is
culturally specific
Presidents Nixon and Carter were sixth
cousins, sharing common ancestors in a
Quaker farming couple named Morris
who lived near colonial Philadelphia.

It determines

Why is it of interest to anthropologists?

What is a descent group?
Descent Systems
Rules that people in different cultures use to:
Ødetermine parenthood
Øidentify ancestry
Ø assign people to social
categories, groups, and
roles on the basis of
inherited status.
How is a descent group like a corporation?
Ø A group of people who recognize lineal descent from a real or
mythical ancestor - a criterion of membership
ØMembership needs to be clearly defined so one knows where
one's loyalties lie
ØA publicly recognised social entity
ØTraced through one sex, everyone is unambiguously assigned to a
group
ØObligations and roles keeps group together
ØCitizenship derived from lineage membership and legal status
depends on it
ØPolitical power and religious power derived from it, cults of gods
and ancestors
ØA strong effective base for social relations
Ø In tribal societies, the descent group, not the nuclear family, is
the fundamental unit.
Unilineal descent
Ø Continues after the death of the members
Ø New members are born into it
ØPeople trace ancestry through either the mother's
or father's line, but NOT both
Ø A perpetual existence that allows it to take corporate actions
ØAbout 60% of kinship systems are unilineal.
Ø Land owning
ØGenerally clear cut and unambiguous social units.

joint interests in property.

trace descent through, a family line may be
patrilineal in one generation and matrilineal in the

intimately than ties of blood between males of the same
