Theme Notes Series 232: Colours Colours This week in Play School we learn about the three primary colours - red, blue and yellow and what happens when they are mixed together. Page 1 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours MAKE AND DO How to Make a Flick Painting How to Make Primary Colour Murals You will need: A large piece of white paper, such as butcher’s paper 3 paint buckets or large plastic containers Yellow, blue and red paint A paint roller 2 inexpensive plastic brooms or dustpan brushes You will need: 3 pieces of cardboard – yellow, red and blue A collection of yellow, red and blue objects, such as patty pans, kitchen sponges, tinsel, coloured plastic bottle lids, straws, craft feathers, ribbons, pegs and pipe cleaners Tape This activity can get very messy, so it’s a good idea to set it up outside. Sort your objects into like colour piles. Fill each plastic container with a primary colour. Use tape to secure all of your yellow objects to your yellow cardboard, your blue objects to your blue cardboard and your red objects to your red cardboard. Use the paint roller to cover the paper in yellow paint. Dip one of the brooms in the bucket of blue paint. Use the broom to flick and swish the blue onto your yellow painting. Dip the other broom in the bucket of red paint and dab on some red paint. Use the brooms to make different patterns. Mix colours together to make new colours! Page 3 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours MAKE AND DO How to Make a Purple Berry Shake You will need: 1 cup milk 1 punnet of blueberries 1 tablespoon plain yoghurt Blend all ingredients together until well combined. Watch as the blueberries turn the milk and yoghurt purple! Pour into a glass and enjoy! Add a teaspoon of honey if desired. Use household objects to create places to visit along the way. For example, you could use boxes and cushions to make a cave and a blue or green towel to make a river. Have fun drawing a map to take you to all of these places! Visit the penguins at the zoo! Watch how they walk and listen to the noises they make. If you can’t go the zoo, find a book about penguins at your local library. Page 5 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours MAKE AND DO How to Make Black, White & Grey Animal Paintings You will need: White paper or cardboard Black and white paint Use black paint to draw a penguin, a zebra and an elephant on white paper or cardboard. Dip your paintbrush into white paint and trace over your black elephant painting. Watch as your elephant turns grey! Ask if you can listen to them play and then have a go yourself! Paint a colourful picture using lots of colours. Mix some colours to make new colours. Page 7 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours MAKE AND DO How to Make Colourful Fabric You will need: Plastic kitchen gloves White fabric Fabric dye – red, blue & yellow Water 3 large buckets or plastic containers First, put on some plastic kitchen gloves to avoid staining your hands with dye. Prepare your dye as directed by manufacturer. Prepare a bucket or container of each primary colour. Scrunch up your fabric. Dip one end into the red dye, the other into the blue dye and the middle into the yellow dye. Have some fun by mixing the colours, for example dip the blue end into the yellow dye, etc. Hang your material out to dry. Look at all the beautiful colours you have made! Page 8 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours How to Make Musical Instruments You will need: Cardboard Safety scissors Old plastic milk bottle lids (approx 10 – 12) Toothpicks Tape A cake tin Ribbon 2 plastic juice bottles with lids Rice A funnel Make your own musical instruments using household objects. Tambourine Cut a long strip of cardboard approximately 60cm x 8cm. Ask an adult to stick a toothpick through the middle of each milk bottle lid. Cut a series of identical rectangles in the middle of the cardboard strip – one for each milk bottle lid. Secure a milk bottle lid in the middle of each rectangle by taping either end of each toothpick to the cardboard strip. Join the ends of the cardboard strip and shake away! Drum Tape a length of ribbon to either side of a cake tin. Wear the cake tin around your neck and use your hands to tap a beat. Maracas Fill two, clean plastic juice bottles with some rice, about a third of the way full. Secure the lids firmly to avoid a mess. Page 10 of 11 Theme Notes Series 232: Colours MAKE AND DO How to Make Puzzle Animals You will need: A set of 3 identical cardboard boxes for each animal you plan to make Coloured markers, pencils, crayons and paint Choose an animal, such as a giraffe, crocodile or elephant. Split the animal into three parts and draw the outline of each part on a box. For example, draw the head, neck and body of a giraffe on three separate boxes. Use markers, pencils, crayons and paint to colour in each part. Mix up the boxes and see if you can put them back together in the right order! Page 11 of 11
