There may be a feline horticulturist in your home; someone, with a tail, and four feet, who will adore growing cat grass. SOOO Yummy in my tummy! To an indoor cat, fresh grass is a delightful banquet; that can be admired, relished, and savored. Your feline, will probably help you plant it, watch it grow, and delight, in nibbling, on the new sprouts. Cat grass is not only healthy; it’s cheap entertainment. Cats who don’t like the cat grass purchased in pet stores, often adore ‘home grown’ cat grass. You will need to purchase Four small plastic pot liners, 3 inches high, by 4 inches wide. Miracle Grow Potting Mix. The bag will say “excellent for indoor and outdoor container plants.” An 8 quart bag will last for over a year when it’s zipped shut after each use. 1-5 pounds (your choice) of oat, rye, or wheat, seed from a local elevator, or perhaps, a farmer friend. Make sure the seed hasn’t been treated with anything. Planting Poke 4 or 5 small holes in the bottom of one small plastic pot liner, for drainage. Add potting mix, until the mix is ½ inch from the top. Add 2 Tablespoons of oat, wheat, or rye seed. Cover the seed, with more potting soil. Gently sprinkle the soil and seed with warm water. Place the grass pot on a small saucer and put in a warm area (perhaps on your kitchen counter) where it will receive daylight. Check daily; keep the soil moist; sprinkle, gently, with warm water, as needed. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Within 5-7 days, the grass will be approximately four inches high and is ready. Place the grass pot in where your feline friend can nibble, smell, relish, admire, and savor! Start another pot, when the first pot is ‘ready to serve,’ for continuous cat grass entertainment, and consumption. Helpful hints Some bakeries will sell 5 gallon frosting pails, with lids. Frosting pails make excellent storage containers for the seed, and potting soil. Buy two, one for each. When re-using the small plastic pot liner, always remove the grass, and the potting soil. Wash the plastic pot liner with hot water, dish soap, and rinse well, before adding new potting soil, and seed. By removing the old soil, grass, and washing the pot, you will keep the pot clean, fresh, and prevent mold from forming. The cat grass will grow better in a clean pot. Your feline friend will appreciate your thoughtful consideration. Provided to you compliments of Mid-Michigan Cat Rescue, Inc.
