Trip Description:
The Azores Futebol Academy provides intensive and extended soccer training for those intensely dedicated players who
truly want to elevate their skills to a new level on a long-term basis. The Azores Futebol Academy has organized youth
soccer trips to the Azores since 2003. This year, we’ll be running a four (4) week session during the summer of 2010.
Note: if needed, a shorter stay can be arranged.

AFA trips are run in the style of a true academy program that you might experience in Brazil, the Netherlands, or
Portugal. The academy program is geared toward enhancing the player’s technical and tactical abilities by providing
intensive training for a sustained period of time – long enough for the newly acquired skills to stay with the player on a
long term basis. Four day or five day soccer camps are useful for exposing players to new soccer training methods or to
provide bonding opportunities for players. But, players need a sustained period of intense training for those newly
acquired skills and training methods to firmly take hold and change a player – long term.
AFA partners with C.D. Santa Clara which is the biggest professional club in the Azores (and the 4th most popular club in
Portugal behind Benfica, Sporting and Porto.)

AFA headquarters will be in the capital city of Ponta Delgada on the beautiful island of São Miguel, Azores.

All-inclusive. Between $2,850.00 - $3,500.00 (depending on length of stay.)

Coaches:
Nuno Campos: Lives in S. Miguel. Nuno is the former U16 coach for C.D. Santa
Clara (the 4th most popular club in Portugal) and assistant to the U18 (Junior) team
for C.D. Santa Clara. His U14 team was Azores Region champion and placed 2nd in
the national championship. He now coaches at Santiago F.C. in nearby Agua de Pau
(about 15 minutes from Ponta Delgada.)
Luis Cabral (trip organizer): Born in S. Miguel and resides in the Boston area.
Coaches the VFC Blast BU16 and GU10 teams. His U14 and U15 Blast teams
were MA state champions, Region 1 semi- finalist and finalist and his U15 team
went to the 2008 National Championships. He is also the former head varsity
coach at Beaver Country Day School.
Steve Schecter: Brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the
Azores Futebol Academy. Steve was an All-State player in high school and 4
year starter at Clark University. After earning NSCAA Academic All-America
third team honors, he spent two seasons playing in the LASA league and in
various international competitions. Coach Schechter began coaching club
players in Atlanta after ending his competitive playing career in 2002.
Prior to joining Beaver Country Day School in 2009, he successfully led a
semi-professional men’s team to an undefeated season and promotion in one of
the nation’s most competitive leagues. He holds an NSCAA Regional Diploma
and is currently the head coach at Beaver Country Day School.

Training Facilities:
Campo do Lajedo : A natural grass field used by the Santa Clara professional team for its training sessions.
Campo Marquês Jácome Correia: A quaint stadium style turf field with lights for evening training or matches.
Santa Clara’s strength and conditioning facilities: Weights, treadmill, stationary bike, stair master, squash
courts, whirlpool, sauna, Jacuzzi.

On most Saturdays: Match against a local club team.
Sundays are usually Free Time. (Trips to the pool or beach, trips into town or to local festivals.) Sundays are
also when we’ll take day trips to local tourist attractions (like the natural Hot Spring pool in Furnas, the Ilheu
de Vila Franca (an islet just off the coast with its own sandy beach and natural ocean pool.)
Laundry and Linens:
Laundry will typically be washed and dried every other day – unless it rains and we need to get clothes washed more
frequently. Every item of clothing should be marked with a Sharpie (with the player’s name or initial.) There’s no need
to bring linens as they will be provided (unless the player wishes to bring his/her own.)
Phones and Internet:
AFA will have several cell phones available for athletes to make calls back home – and for general communication during
the trip. Players can opt to buy local pre-paid cell phones as well. There’s no WiFi onsite at the dorm. However, mobile
broadband is available for purchase. Internet access will be provided in case of emergency.
