The “Asia Carrousel” is a series of events taking place in 2014 which aims to strengthen and deepen
relations between the Netherlands and Asia, and all partners involved. As part of the Asia Carrousel,
the Asia and Oceania Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organizing a number of external
events involving Dutch diplomats currently posted in Asian countries who give presentations about
their work abroad.
Based on new findings from the archives of North Korea’s former and current communist allies, James
Person, Director of the North Korea International History Program at the Wilson Center in Washington,
DC, will give a presentation on previously hidden dynamics in the Sino-DPRK alliance that limit
Beijing’s present-day influence over Pyongyang. Person holds a PhD in modern Korean history from
the George Washington University, Washington, DC.
