NAZI PROPAGANDA IN AMERICA
German-owned
commercial
houses
in America and American concerns seeking German trade are being u- ed a s
nerve centers for Nazi propaganda in
this country, and Nazis are filtering into
church circles here are among the statements contained in the current issue of
"The American Hebrew," national Anglo-Jewish weekly in the second installment of its expose of Nazi propaganda in the United States .
Prominent among these concerns are
leading German steamship companies
and toqrist offices, embracing agencies
throughout the country, it is stated.
"'Sinister Nazi propaganda in the United
States," says the American H ebrew "is
not confined to the active party work·ers des cribed in the last installment;
the ultimate aim of those who direct
this propaganda is to include everyone
and every German in the United States
in the vast machinery. A aecisive step
forward in this direction was made
when, during the summer of 1933 the
largest German business enterprises in
the United States were brought into
line with the N azi campaign.
"The Hamburg American Line and the
North German Lloyd are in the fro nt
rank of Naziism. Dr Goebbels found valuable allies in the men at the head of
these organizations, like Heinz Schuengel and John . Schroeder of the North
German Lloyd, and Adolf Sch eurer of
the Hamburg American Line.
These
men put their organizations, with the
far-flung agency network throughout
the United States, unreservedly at the
disposal of the 'cause'."
Hiding their affiliations with the H itler propaganda system according' to the
Ameri can H ebrew th ese offices tell theIr
J ewish friends: "As good Germans, we
are enthusiastic about the things which
Hitler is tloing. But of course, we do
not approve of his policy regarding the
Jewish question. We are genuinely fond
of our Jewish friends."
.
"The week-end is their most active
campaigning period. At house parties on
exclusive Long Island estates, in W est·
TEMP LE
BULLET IN
chester and in Newport they inform
their American society friends of the
Jewish danger. Everyone who has lost
money in the market is told: 'If you
don't do something against the Jews,
pretty soon you will lose the rest of your
money.' These sinister parleys are in
no sense to be understood as the mere
opinions interchanged in social contacts;
they are definitely actuated by instructed, organized and intensely directed efforts to achieve an objective. They have
financial impli cations . Usually, an appeal for funds to carryon the gO.od work
. is made, and in surprisingly many cases,
large ch ecks are forthcoming. These
checks are deposited to the personal accounts of these German-American business men who, in turn, hand over cash
to the accl'edited official Nazi agents.
"One place where these metho:ls are
being practised in the famou s German
Club, at 5 East 66th street. This Sl.!mptuous club house," says the American
Hebrew, "is a hot-bed of Nazi agitation
and plotting-a Hitler outpost. It is of
great assistance to the men who are
actually running the Deutscher Verein
that several prominent German-American J ews are on its exclusive roster,
none of whom, of course, are aware of
the sinister goings-on In private cabals.
If anyone expresses surprise at the spirit
prevailing at the German Club, the Nazi
protagonists immediately answer: 'But
YJU are mistaken; don't you know that
Mr. So-and-So and Mr. So-and-So: who
are good Jews, are members here?
"The Nazis realize, of course, that
American church circles have been
quite outspoken in t heir criticism of the
religious persecution practised by the
National Socialists. For this reason,
particular efforts are being made to penetrate religious organizations, clubs of
all denominations, etc., and to make
them 'understand' the ideas of Hitler.
The tactics are to tell ministers and
others affiliated with religious organizations that, if the Germans had not stepped on the Jews, the Jews would have
destroyed the Protestant and Catholic
churches alike. There are a hundred
variations on this theme."
