..to the latest issue of Chatterbox
magazine.
This issue is very special as we celebrate
45 years of the Jancett Day Nurseries
this month. We opened our first day
nursery in 1969 and 45 years later are
as committed to providing quality day
care when we began.
There are changes in childcare training
which were introduced this month by the
government and we now offer the brand
new Early Years Educator (EYE)
qualification at Level 3 which replaces
the Level 3 Childcare and Young
People’s Workforce qualification. New
from JACE, we also offer the Supporting
Teaching and Learning in Schools
qualification and Health and Social
Care.
The nurseries and clubs received visits
from Ofsted over the summer months
and I want to congratulate all staff on
our Good and Outstanding reports.
This issue is full of news from the
children, staff and learners - enjoy the
issue and getting to know them all
better. As we reach this significant
milestone of 45 years, on behalf of John
and I and the directors, thank you to the
families that use our
services and to all our
staff
for
your
continued support
and hard work.

In the last issue of Chatterbox we shared the
exciting news that we were awaiting a
company mascot. We are delighted to
introduce you to “Jazzy” our Jancett mascot.
The name was shortlisted and then picked out
by children
from Beano’s
Playsafe club.
Jazzy will be
out and about
visiting our
nurseries and
some clubs
plus community
events over the
coming months.
..to take the NEW Childcare qualification in
the Early Years Educator (EYE) standard with
JACE Training when it comes into effect on
September 1st this year. This first qualification
is called Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years
Practitioner.
Following plans to make GCSE Maths and
English an entry requirement for the Level 3
Childcare qualification, the government has
announced that for the next 12 months
obtaining GCSE Maths and English will
instead be an exit requirement at Level 3. This
will ensure that you will be eligible to work as
a level 3 educator in a child care setting and
Ofsted will recognise you as such.
This means anyone who wants to work with
children and apply for a Level 3 Advanced
Apprenticeship but did not achieve GCSE
Grades A to C in Maths and English at school
will now be able to work towards their
childcare qualification and gain their GCSEs
at the same time when training with JACE.

Round
Up
The Jancett Group of Day Nurseries and Playsafe
Clubs opened our first day nursery in 1969 and
now have five nurseries, one specialist baby unit
and 16 breakfast, after school and holiday clubs
in the local community.
How do I know Playwork is
the right career for me?
Recently, we opened two new Playsafe clubs and
due to the expansion are now looking for
qualified Playwork Managers / Early Years
Professionals to join our team.
In contrast to working with babies and
pre school children, Playwork typically involves
working with older children. Jancett Playsafe
clubs offer a breakfast, after school and holiday
club provision for children aged 4 to 11 years
and have clubs in the Wallington, Carshalton,
Sutton, Cheam and Croydon area.
Whether you are new to the child care profession
or already qualified and looking for a new
challenge, working with children offers you a
responsible and rewarding career, and childcare
welcomes apprentices and newly qualified
practitioners into the profession every year.
How do I know childcare is
the right career for me?
If you know you want to work with younger
children - babies up to school age - childcare
could be the best path for you. A career in
childcare enables you to work in an environment
where the focus is supporting children’s social,
physical, intellectual, and creative development,
typically in a nursery setting or working as a child
minder.
Playwork attracts creative, inspiring and caring
individuals. As a Playworker you can become a
role model and the children will look up to you
which is a big responsibility plus essential, both
for the families you work with, and for you and
your personal and professional development.
If you would like to find out more about a
career in Playwork, or you are qualified and
would like more information about the job
opportunities and careers available at
Jancett Playsafe, email your CV to:

Apprentice
Childcare Practitioner
You may choose to enter the child care profession
as an apprentice. This involves working and
training towards your qualification at the same
time.
Alternatively you may have achieved your
qualifications and feel ready to take the next step
towards a supervisory or managerial role. If you
are interested in an apprenticeship or you already
hold a level 2, 3 or higher qualification, Jancett
would like to hear from you.

A Visit from
ZooLabs
Jancett Day Nursery’s
Rainbow Room
enjoyed a visit from
ZooLab. A
representative came to
see us and brought lots
of exciting insects for
us to look at and
touch. She told us
about her journey to
the rain forest and all
the insects she saw
along the way.
We met a big spider, a
millipede, some stick
insects and a hissing
cockroach but the one
we were most excited
about was the snake
called Casper. It was
lots of fun and very educational to see all the
animals and the children all joined in touching
and handling them. We were all very brave!
A big thank you to ZooLabs for visiting us. For
more information about their work, visit:

I have a great vocation for working with
children. I have obtained a great deal of
experience of working with children aged
three months to nineteen years and with
children with a wide range of disabilities.
I will be studying the Early Years
Foundation degree as it is an excellent
opportunity for myself and the children in
my care to develop my professional
understanding, knowledge and key skills
within Early Years. I have obtained an
NVQ level Two and Three in Childcare
and a CACHE Level 3 in Home-based
Child minding and hold qualifications in
First Aid, Safeguarding, PECS, EYFS, SEN

Startel Day Nursery & Baby Room in Wallington have been
very busy over the summer and we have lots of news to
share.
We would like to welcome Devon to the team and to say
congratulations on being appointed Deputy Manager.
Well done also to Lauren D and Louise R on completing
their Level 3 Diploma in Childcare.
Bunnies Room’s Incy Wincy Spider display
The staff and children have been so creative. The babies in
Bunnies Room created a stunning display all about Incy
Wincy Spider (above right) while Yellow Room have
introduced real vegetables to their role play corner. This
innovative idea means the children can learn all about the
real smells and textures of vegetables including garlic and
leeks.
Talking of vegetables, the garden is full of wonderful plants
and bushes which the children are helping grow. There is a
strawberry bush, a specially grown non prickly blackberry
bush, a cucumber plant and chives in wellies. An exciting
experiment is taking place with the tomato plant - the
children have put a box around one tomato so that it will
grow square. Watch this space.
Yellow Room’s real vegetable role play corner
Startel will be making cakes with a difference in support for
national McMillan Coffee morning on Friday 27th
September. Expect some inventive recipes!

Finally, the staff want to wish the children who have
graduated a fond farewell and best wishes for big school.

We have lots of news to share with you
since the last issue. Danielle goes on
maternity leave this month and we all wish her
well and cannot wait to meet her new addition.
Nicola has been promoted to Senior Childcare
Practitioner and had this to say about her new
role: “It has been amazing. Staff have been
supportive and I’m
developing confidence
wise already.“
We have put up a display
board in reception and
have chosen a tree which

as a team and together
can build on our strengths
and success.

set the rooms a fun
competition to create a
wall display. The only brief
was it had
to “Wow”
everyone and be completed in
a week.
Congratulations to the winning

Room, Wallington
Gaytime Day Nursery & Baby Room in Wallington
were inspected by Ofsted in July 2014 and
received an OUTSTANDING report, the second time
in a row Ofsted have given the nursery this grade.
Here is what Ofsted had to say about Gaytime in their
report published in August 2014:
"The quality of teaching overall is extremely
good. Children of all ages have excellent
support for their language development."
"Partnerships with parents are extremely
effective. Parents are valued and staff welcome
and implement parents' suggestions regarding
children's learning and care. Staff actively
encourage parents to take an active role in
supporting their children's development at
home and in the setting by working successfully
with them."
"The learning environment is child friendly and

level of independence. Staff organise space
and resources very well in all areas to meet
children's needs, promote play, independence
and decision-making skills."

What Parents Say About Us
“Very happy with the care
and service that is
provided.”
"l would like to say thank you for
giving my daughter the opportunity
to attend Bright choice. Since
attending your nursery, she has
improved her social skills and
developed. She is very polite when
asking she can count 1 to 10, she
enjoys singing and role play, she is
a happy child and she talks more
than her age group. She has asked
me when l am reading a newspaper
if it is important, when asked about
her name, where do you live and
how old are you she is able to tell
you. So many wonderful things
have happened since joining your
nursery."
"We look forward to hearing about
everything our daughter has done
and learnt that day. She has an
excellent relationship with the staff
and we feel confident leaving her
in their care."
“I’m very happy with the service
provided. Both Ceri and Charlie are
fantastic with the children. They give
my son help, support, fun and very
yummy meals! He enjoys coming
here which makes my life a lot
easier. I would recommend this club
to other working parents.”
“Staff are personable,
approachable, welcoming,
friendly and very much loved by
our children. As a working mum
the fantastic service offered goes
a long way to alienating any
working mum guilt.”
“I have been very impressed with the
manager and her team plus other
members of staff when I have visited
your head office to either make
payments or collect information.
Jancett run a highly professional
childcare service that I would
thoroughly recommend."
Thank you to all staff and parents who generously donated their Sainsbury’s Active Kids
Vouchers to us. We are delighted to report we have received brand new resources for
the nurseries for the children to use. Exciting resources include Bean bags, Pom Poms,
hoops, lotto, glitter sticks, egg and spoon sets and jumbo magnifiers.

Wow! How time flies when we are having fun!
Our Babysitting course in partnership with
Greenshaw High School has come to an end
and now there is only one thing left to say;
“You have been a pleasure to work with ladies,
Congratulations and we wish you the best for
Year 11 and all of the Babysitting you will be
doing in the future.”
We started to work with Princess, Tanisha, Bliss,
Jodie, Chloe, Stefany, Natalie, Asta & Molly in
February this year where they became involved
very quickly with getting messy, making their own
playdough and cornflour.
They quickly came to understand that babysitting
was not only a good way to make extra pocket
money but what an extra responsibility!
All have taken part and have achieved the
Cache Level 2 Babysitting Qualification and
have good understanding in health and Safety,
preventing accidents, creative activities and their
roles & responsibilities in being a safe and
reliable babysitter.
We are looking forward to running our next

A Personal Journey
I took a call from our proprietor Chris Pritchard in
March asking if I would compere along with
Stephen Drummond at the JACE awards evening
that was being held in Croydon on 24th April
2014.
My first reaction was to laugh and the second was
panic! Why laugh? I hear you ask well that’s how I
deal with most things.
Why panic? Well I’m Paula and I used to have an
extremely bad stutter.
As a child from the age of 6 I had speech therapy
4 times a week . I remember enjoying it I’m not
sure if that was because I got out of school or
because it helped me.
My stutter made me painfully shy and I hated
being asked to talk in class or read out loud from
a book. I wouldn’t ask for help at school and
consequently my education suffered and I got
behind. As a teenager I wouldn’t go in a shop or
answer the phone as I was so embarrassed about
my speech.
As I got older and gained more confidence, my
stutter became a thing of the past and now
people don’t even realise I ever had a problem.
On the night of the awards I stood on the stage
and along with Stephen did my best to announce
the awards and the lucky winners. After it was
over, I must admit I headed to the bar for a small
glass of Dutch courage. I took a moment to reflect
on the girl that was so shy and scared.
If, as parents, you are worried about your child if
they stammer, my advice is to seek professional
advice of course. But please also realise that the
less attention given to the problem in front of the
child the better. And please never finish a
sentence for anyone who stutters.
Paula S, JACE Wallington
My name is Mariam
Anwar and I work
for the Childcare
admin team at head
office. I am working
towards completing
my Level 3 Business
Administration and
have enjoyed it a
lot. It has been just
over a year I have
worked for the
admin team and
have realised how extremely busy summer is in
the office. These two last months have been very
crazy, we have over 100 breakfast and afterschool club children who are due to start with us
in September 2014 and Mandy and I have been
dealing with several tasks to ensure all
paperwork is ready for the playsafe managers
before 18th August which was successful. Other
tasks the office has been dealing with are
sending out new start letters to parents, summer
2014 holiday club, invoicing parents, archiving,
planning for October 2014 half term holiday
club etc.
I have learned a lot within a year which I use as
evidence for my coursework; some examples are
dealing with phone calls, communicating to
parents face-to-face and completing all my tasks
prior to their importance.
Business Administration L3 has been enjoyable
as well as complicated to complete, thanks to
my assessor Natalie who has always been there
to support me when I have been stressed. I enjoy
working for the team and enjoy the tasks I am
asked to carry out.

Ashley has experienced a difficult phase in his
life and one that he can now say is definitely
part of his past.
He wanted to
make something

go along with it.
The local council
had also been
helping and guiding him with the changes he
wished to make.
He happened to mention to them that he had

enjoying it and it was perhaps a career he
would like to develop. With their help the
change he had been trying for began to
happen.
They contacted us at JACE Training to see if we
could help. I then visited Ashley and met his
employers who were very keen to help him to
achieve his qualification. Ashley is now well on
his way to achieve his level 2 in Professional
Cookery and each day he learns new skills.
Due to his continuing success he was
nominated by Becky Bew for the Professional
Development Award - as part of the ‘Try

As this report goes to press I am extremely
pleased to report that Ashley was not only
nominated but won the award and he is
currently waiting to hear about his
presentation.
Thanks to Ian Jones and Billy Nicholas, his
employers for giving him the chance.
Many people have supported him on his career
journey including Becky Bew, Bridget Hoyte
and Trish Galvin - all employed by Kent
County Council, & Paula Luke from JACE
Training.
Ashley is funded by Kent County Council

JACE The Catering Company News
In January I turned the big 30, and with this I decided
to celebrate the year with filling it with a few items from
my bucket list! A triathlon has always been very high on
my list to complete as I always loved watching others
compete at numerous events as a child. It was now or
never.
So here began my journey to the epic London Triathlon
on August the 2nd 2014. And what better way to have
raise some money for a worthy charity close to my
heart, on the way - the MacMillan Cancer Charity.
Training wasn’t easy especially the early morning swim
sessions in the winter, but I thoroughly enjoyed and
found a new love for long distance running and
cycling. I even bought and put together my road bike,
which I don’t recommend as I was a bit shaky about
taking it out for the first time, but a quick visit to the
bike store to check over and I was on my way.
27 minutes later I finally get out of the water the other
side and run to get on my bike for the cycle part of the
race. After the gruelling hills of the cycle course it
was time to get off and start running, and boy were my
legs shaky. I crossed the finish line in 2 hours 30 min
and 47 seconds exactly, greeted by my loving
supporters (family & friends) and some cheeky high
fives by some very excited spectators.
I managed to complete a personal goal and raise
£600 for my charity along the way. I left for home on
a big high that night and possibly caught the Tri bug
too. Already looking for the next event so watch out.

The event itself seemed so far away and training was
going on forever (since January) , but then suddenly
one afternoon it hit me, it was only a week away now.
And suddenly I felt very unprepared. But thinking off all
the sponsors and the money we raised that very quickly
turned back into excitement and determination that no
matter what, I was going to at least reach the finish
line, even if it took be 6 hours.
On the day itself I was awake early preparing with the
normal ritual of black coffee and as much carbs as one
person can consume so early in the day. Then packed
up my gear and head off to London for the 3:30pm
start.
At 3:25pm
exactly I was
lowering myself
in to the water
of the Royal
Docks ready
for the swim,
you can’t
imagine how
small you feel
once you hit
the water and
see the huge
course before
you. None the less the horn went off and there we
went.
