Directions for Applying Windows XP Service Pack 2 for TAMS users.
Windows has released Windows XP Service Pack 2. Tulane's office of Technology Services encourages
you to install this Service Pack as soon as you are prompted to do so. In some work areas, this may be
done as part of the controlled updates to your computer. If you are in a work area that requires you to
download the updates, you may wish to turn on the automatic update feature. If your computer does not
have automatic updates enabled or you are not certain it is enabled, you can use this tool available from
Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx .
Service Pack 2 should automatically download and install. This means that the installation will take place in
the background and you may only be asked to restart your computer. If you suspect that has happened,
you can verify the successful installation of Service Pack 2:
•
•
•
•
•
Go to the Start menu
Right click My Computer
Select Properties from the pop up menu
You will see the Windows System Properties box appear
Notice at the top of the window, under System:, it will say your operating system, and should say
Service Pack 2 at the bottom of the list
If you do not have Service Pack 2 listed, and are in a controlled update work area, please check with your
local system administrator to see when Service Pack 2 will be downloaded. If you are not in a controlled
update work area, and do not have automatic updates turned on, then you can manually install the update
from the Microsoft Web site once it has been distributed.
General directions for installing Service Pack 2 are found at
http://tis.tulane.edu/How_To/Everything_Else/XPSP_2.cfm . A modified version follows below for TAMS
users. If you are in a controlled update work area, please check with your local system administrator as to
when SP2 will be sent to your machine. Once the update has occurred, please verify the settings
mentioned on pages 7 through 16. If you have any differences, please adjust them to what is shown in this
document. Making these changes for TAMS may require you to contact your local system administrator.
Before you begin:

Blocker to a medium level of security. You may need to customize this to suit your needs. The easiest way
to make these customizations is on an "as needed" basis. When Microsoft blocks a pop up window, you
