Dear Mr. Lew is :

the S tate Department o f Education, to v i s i t the M arti School. F ollow in g
is our rep ort to you and to the proper school a u t h o r it ie s .
This p r iv a te s ix -y e a r high school is conducted in a tw o-year old
b u ild in g on the M arti Farm on Munger Road, in the West C a rro llto n School
D i s t r i c t , about two m iles north o f the v i l l a g e . The b u ild in g, a large
housing u nit secured from Wright Patterson A i r Force Base, has been c a r e f u l l y rem odelled and is adapted adm irably to the p e c u lia r needs o f th is
small p riv a te sch ool. The rooms are a t t r a c t i v e l y decorated, f lo o r s are
o f asphalt t i l e , t o i l e t f a c i l i t i e s are adequate, lig h t in g is s a t is fa c t o r y ,
and the water supply apparently adequate. C u stodial s e rv ic e s are performed
by the students them selves, and appear to be s a t is fa c t o r y . In a d d itio n to
fou r classroom s, there is a lib r a r y and a la rg e study-ha11-assembly room
th at is a ls o used fo r p h ysica l education when weather does not permit goin g
o u t-o f-d o o rs . The s i t e , about one a c r e , is a la rg e h i l l - s i d e f i e l d ,
se v e ra l hundred yards south o f the M arti resid en ce.
The purpose o f th is school is e n t ir e ly c o lle g e p rep aratory, w ith
e s p e c ia l emphasis on preparation fo r c o lle g e board examinations and other
c o lle g e a p titu d e and sch olarsh ip t e s ts and exam inations. C u rricu la r
o ffe r in g s r e f l e c t th is purpose, w ith strong emphasis on fo r e ig n languages,
s o c ia l s c ie n c e s , mathematics, and E n g lish . In s tru c tio n in the ph ysical
and b io lo g ic a l sciences is lim ite d by lack o f adequate la b ora tory f a c i l i t i e s and equipment. General science and b io lo g y are o ffe r e d each yea r;
chem istry every other y e a r; physics not a t a l l , although arrangements have
been made w ith the nearby C e n t e r v ille High School (Washington Tw p.) to
accept o ccasion al students in th is f i e l d . Minimum Requirements f o r ph ysic a l education are met by in stru ctio n two periods weekly and emphasis on

Because o f the small en rollm en t, p resen tly 37, and small cla ss
s i t e , much in d iv id u a l in s tru c tio n is g iv e n , and t u t o r ia l type teaching
is done. On the basis o f the success o f the graduates o f th is school
in sco rin g w e ll on c o lle g e board examinations and the variou s aptitu de
t e s t s , and in securing sch ola rsh ip s, i t would appear th at the in stru c t io n a l program is sa t is f a c t o r y .
The length o f the school year and t h e duration of the school day
meet the requirements o f the minimum standards f o r Ohio High School and
equal or exceed those o f the d i s t r i c t o f We s t C a rro llto n in which the
school is lo c a te d . We n ote, however, that only s ix 42 minute periods pe r
week are provided f o r chem istry, seven being requ ired by Standards, and
on ly f i v e period s o f a r t f o r one u n it o f c r e d it , whereas ten are requ ired .
W ritten study guides have not been prepared f o r each area of in stru ctio n , although continual discu ss i on, study, and r e v is io n a re being c a rrie d
on by the e n t ir e s t a f f . The edu cational program p re s e n tly lacks p ro v ision
fo r a f i f t h u n it o f English as requ ired by Standard lY - b , as w e ll as any
o f f e r in g in music. While the study o f Ohio h is to r y is included In the 8th
grade course in American h is to r y , there re ta in s a question as to whether or
not t h is me e ts the requirements o f House Bi l l s o . 76 (R evised Code 5313.60 ) .
We note that two teachers do not hold c e r t i f i c a t e s fo r e it h e r the
pu blic school or non-tax supported sch ools. A l l oth er teach ers are p rop erly
c e r t i f i c a t e d and are w e ll prepared in the f i e l d s to which they have been
assign ed.
To order to comply with the requirements of se c tio n 3312.21 o f the
Revised Code, i t w i l l be necessary f o r the a u th o r itie s o f t h is school to
rep ort the r e g is t r a t io n o f a l l pupils to the d i s t r i c t of t h e ir residence
a t the beginning o f each school yea r, or a t the t i me o f e n tr y , w ith date
o f e n tr y , b irth d a te , age, resid en ce, and p aren ts' name. Monthly attendance
re p o rtin g to each d i s t r i c t w i l l be necessary, w ith dates o f en try and w ith drawal f o r those who e n te r or withdraw during the current re p o rtin g p erio d .
We note that pu p ils
