3B. Getting students to engage using creativity and faciliation

1
Resources Neeeded: Workbook( pg3)
Purpose: Creativity can improve the way people learn and remember academic
topics. Shall we see if this is a wild accusation or true – lead to activity.
Activity: Get the students to think back to a fond memory and write it in the
workbook (2 mins) –
Get the students to raise their hand - who is thinking of a time where you sat and
wrote some notes?
People remember vivid pictures, games, movement, colours.
Debrief: Skills we go through today will not only help your interactions with first
years but also your own revision and exams.
2
Resources Needed: Workbook ( Aims on pg3)
Purpose: Agenda explained
To understand why creativity works within Academia
To see creativity relate to STEM subjects
To try for yourself and see how you can apply different techniques to
different worksheets
Activity: Talk by presenters – hammer home the key point that this is not about us
telling you what to do but arming you with the skills and techniques that you can
apply to any subject.
Debrief:
3
Resources Needed: Workbook ( Background on pg4-5)
Purpose: A quick perspective of why creativity is so important in life (employable
skill reference), also creativity is not just for the arts and music. Also a basic
understanding of learning styles(people learn in many different ways so it is
important to try and integrate as many styles as possible in an activity. Even if this is
for your personal revision you may learn better in a way you have never tried before)
Eg. – I always thought writing notes was the best way to learn but then I started
brainstorming with my friend and we quizzed eachother. I also am always moving
around when I am thinking of a new thing – visual, audial and kinaesthetic.
Activity: Write VARK on the board and get students to shout out what they think
each one stands for in relation to learning styles
V - Visual
A - Audio
R – Reading and writing
K – Kinestetic (ask if people know what this means)
4
Debrief: Some learning styles and there are many creative ways to hit up as many as
possible in one activity. Helps you learn and specifically helps facilitation in bigger
groups where there could be a range of different learners.
4
Resources Needed: Nothing
Purpose: View of content that you would find in a textbook or in a lecture.
Activity: N/A
Debrief: This is a regular thing in the majority of lectures and in the majority of text
books. We know there are good lecturers throughout the University and some
interesting books but how can you apply a theatre machine to bring this topic to life?
Learning styles – Read/Write
5
Resources Needed: Workbook has activity submission (pg7)
Purpose: View of content that you would find in a textbook or in a lecture in a
different way.
Activity: (2 mins)Explain what a theatre machine is (A theatre machine is a dynamic,
moving freeze picture. The aim is to connect and interact with the other ‘machine
parts’ to establish relationships.)
(5 mins)Run through rules of different objects and begin activity.
Debrief: (3 mins) Easy way to get people involved and get them to understand a
complicated diagram or process. This can be applied to nearly any area that has
multiple parts or multiple layers.
Learning styles – Kinaesthetic
6
Resources Needed: Discursive activity, but flipcharts could be helpful to record your
ideas.
Purpose: thinking in a creative and memorable way about nationalism.
Activity: N/A
Debrief: How can you study nationalism in a creative, discursive way to help students
to work through any issues they have in understanding.
Learning styles – Audial/Kinaesthetic
7
8
Resources Needed: Workbook has activity submission (pgX)
Purpose: View of content that you would find in a textbook or in a lecture in a
different way.
Activity: (2 mins)Explain what nationalism is, and how there can be different kinds of
nation.
(5 mins)Run through rules of different objects and begin activity.
Debrief: (3 mins) Easy way to get students thinking about this subject without giving
them all the answers. Also, a fun way of learning!
Learning styles – Kinaesthetic
9
10
Resources Needed: Workbook ( Categories on pg8-11 and submission sheets on 1215)
Purpose: Get everyone to give it a go tackling a random worksheet and seeing how
any subject area can be creatively engaged.
There are 3 worksheets that are going to be assigned to random tables.
Remember what VARK stands for and to try and hit as many learning styles as
possible.
4 categories with some ideas to get you started.
Activity: Talk by presenters – Go through process of handing out worksheets and
then getting them to think of an idea as a group and then write on the submission
sheets provided.(2 mins)
Debrief: N/A

4 categories with some ideas to get you started.
Activity: Run through different categories with some ideas on how to apply them (In
workbook). Give groups two categories to choose from and one worksheet. Let them
think of an idea (10 mins)
Debrief: N/A
12
Resources Needed: Workbook (submission sheets on pg21-15)
Purpose: Get people to share their ideas and also write down some of the other
groups ideas on topics.
Activity: Get groups to take turns explaining what worksheet they got and what
activity they have done. Ask them what learning styles they think they have
integrated into the activity. As students present get the others to write down the
ideas in the workbook. (12 mins)
Debrief: In the space of 10/15 mins groups have created varying activities that can
be applied to different subject areas within STEM. This will be a useful thing to take
to sessions with groups of students or even to friends and in your own revision
situations.
13
Resources Needed: Nothing
Purpose: Share ideas with other Leaders – go back to meetings and debriefs and
share your activities. We are growing a resource booklet so we will take photos of all
your resource submissions. Use these to think of your resources and write the ideas
down for sessions – easy to share with other leaders.
this isn’t just effective for facilitating sessions but helps when understanding how
students prefer to learn/remember/engage. Students start to understand how they
work for themselves and can revise themselves. It helps with the transition into
university and throughout university as they can work out for themselves how to
effectively learn. As it is student led you get so many magical and different ideas
from students who clicked with something.
Activity: N/A
Debrief: Take these into your own revision practices and see if it works and helps.
If you want to contact us or brainstorm more ideas information is in the workbooks.
