Mrs. Martin’s Minions
August 12, 2016
Reading: Each week the students will have two stories to read. They will spend
Monday and Tuesday working with a shorter story in the Reading/Writing workshop
book (1 fish book). Then on Wednesday and Thursday, the students will work with
the longer story in the Literature Anthology (2 fish book).
This week the students practiced finding the key details in the story “Help.” They
also identified the characteristics of a fantasy story. The students spent part of
the week learning about root words and the inflectional endings –s, -es, -ed, and
–ing and how inflectional endings can help determine what a word means.
Language Arts: Grammar—The students practiced identifying two different
kinds of sentences: statements and questions. Spelling—This week’s spelling
pattern was short a and short i words. The students did a great job spelling their
words this week. Please remember to help your child study their words each night.
Writing—The student’s learned how to brainstorm a list of topics to write about,
which will be used daily for awhile.
Math: The students spent their week in math learning about different strategies
for addition. They learned about the Commutative Property, counting on, doubles
and near doubles, make 10, and group addends differently.
Social Studies: The students continued learning about rules, procedures, and how
to be a good citizen.

Discipline
One of the reasons I became a teacher was due to the experiences I had when I was in school.
I was often terrified of my teachers and therefore, didn’t enjoy school. As I grew up and knew I
wanted to teach, I decided I never wanted my students to feel the way I had felt. I want my
classroom to be a safe, challenging, and fun environment for all. In order for this to happen,
there must be order and routine.
We have Disney for every aspect of our room. Our behavior tracker is no different. Each
student begins on “Ready to Learn” each morning. This means everyone gets a fresh start each
and every day. I record where each magnetic name is at the end of the day and then they are
moved back to “Ready to Learn” for the following day. I’ve included a small version of this
below. The students can tell you how it works.
There is also the opportunity to move “UP.” This would mean student did something extra
spectacular. (Helping another student, etc.) The idea is to be on one of the first three at the
end of the day. You can get moved to “Mike” in the morning, but may get moved back to
“Ready to Learn” later in the day. It rewards in this way, as well.
Incredible!
