Love the Truth
27 JUNE 2014
Tēnā Koutou Katoa, Greetings to you
REAL LOVE IS NOT QUID PRO QUO
The Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit is a loving
relationship.
The nature of the relationship is
considered to be a mystery because, as humans, we
are incapable of understanding it.
However, the Bible does give us some insight into
loving relationships and what they might show.
When the Bible is translated into English it loses
something of the complexity of love. Before using
English, the Bible used Greek and it used different
words for love. Among these were eros, which is
associated with romantic love, philia, associated with
friendship love and agape, which is unconditional
love. Agape is the word most frequently used when
the Gospels talk of love.
Love does not walk alone in the Bible. It tends to
walk with Justice. Collective they are understood to
be centred upon relationships and the desire to
ensure that relationships are kept holy and loving.
There are four of these loving relationships evidenced
in the Bible. They are relationship with God, our self,
others and creation.
NEWSLETTER NO. 9
Agape is love given without expectation of something
in return. We give because we are in relationship
with another. Every parent in our community will
know what this means. It is expressed in our
relationship with our children and frequently others.
While it is nice to receive something in return for the
love which we give to children, we know only too well
that we cannot compel something in return.
Our Service Day nurtures our relationship with others.
It is agape in action. We work for the community with
no expectation of direct benefit except that which we
gain from being a community member. This is why
we do not ask for payment from the organisations we
work for.
Service Day extends the boundaries of unconditional
love (agape) to include other community members
such as the people in the Solomon Islands and
Philippines. This is why we ask students to seek
sponsorship for the work that they are doing. Most of
that money will not be of benefit to the students but it
will be of benefit to others.
We give money to those whom we are not able to
directly assist. When Jesus said we should love our
neighbour, he was asked, “Who is my neighbour?”
His answer directed us towards the whole of
humanity, not just those in our local community. This
is why we support Caritas, a Catholic international aid
organisation.
Agape is also a key reason for stopping Mufti Days,
for they are conditional love. That is not a relationship
which we want to foster in a Catholic College. It may
be a pragmatic and effective way to collect some
money, but it does not promote the unconditional love
that Scriptures ask of us. Mufti Days promote an
attitude of self-centred love. They are based on a
premise that, “I will give money if you give me an
opportunity to wear casual clothing”, which to all intent
is about loving (donating) if there is something in it for
me.
We want to promote a spirit of giving from our staff,
parents and students because they are in a
relationship with all of humanity. Thanks for your
support of our Service Day.
CYBER BULLYING
Symantec offers the following top 10 tips for parents
and children:
 Set aside time to discuss appropriate online
behaviour and create age-appropriate ‘House
Rules’ about how computers, smart phones and
gaming systems are used at home.
 For parents, be a positive role model and be aware
that children like to imitate your behaviour.
 Do not share private information like passwords,
name, address or phone numbers with people you
don’t know.
 If you are being harassed online, block the harasser
and report the situation to an adult such as a parent
or teacher.
 Do not respond to the harasser/s online as this
could encourage them to continue.
 Find out how to report bullying and harassment on
each of the social networks that you use.
 Keep a record of calls, messages, posts and emails
that may be offensive and harmful.
 Use privacy options wisely on social networking
sites.
 Use strong, unique passwords on all your accounts
and devices, especially mobile phones and install
security software on all devices.
 Be kind. If you have harassed a person online:
apologise, take down any offensive material as
soon as possible and talk to a trusted adult.

WPSSA CROSS COUNTRY - Tuesday 26 August
Due to the clash of events in Week 5 this term, the
decision was made to enter the Primary Schools
competition in Term 3, instead of the Secondary Schools
event as planned.
The Sports Department will send home a newsletter
asking for permission and helpers.
Unlike the Northland Secondary Schools event, there is
no additional charge to enter in this event. Students
should read daily notices for a meeting notification to
confirm entry and collect a slip.
The Year 7 & 8’s who qualified (top 5) were asked to let
me know if they wish to attend, however only half of these
have been to see me.

GATEWAY DEPARTMENT …
The Gateway Programme enables senior students to participate in structured workplace learning.
Students who participate in this programme are interested in a career in a particular industry. The
students find work-based learning helps them better understand the skills required in their chosen
career paths and may also help lead onto an apprenticeship, employment or future training
courses.
Gerard Stam, owner of Jubilee Motors, has been a proud supporter of the programme for seven
years. He is pictured below with Jack Draper, a Year 11 student.
Interview with Gerard Stam:
Gerard says he likes to support the students because that is how
he began his career. He completed work experience through
school which eventually helped him secure an apprenticeship in
the motor industry.
Gerard enjoys having our students because they are focussed,
have good time management and achieve their work.
Our students enjoy their work experience at Jubilee Motors and
feel it contributes towards them deciding whether the motor
industry is the right career path for them.
The Gateway Department would like to thank Gerard for his
support towards our students throughout the last seven years.
We really value his support.

Payment of NZQA fees is due at the College office by
Friday 15 August, so mark this date on your calendar.
This year the cost is $76.70, which has been added to
your school account. Please note that if you have a
regular automatic payment coming to the school for your
account, payments are not usually allocated to this
charge unless we receive specific instructions from
parents to do so. If you would like to discuss this,
please contact Jane in Reception.
Payments after the due date must be made direct to
NZQA and incur a $50.00 late payment fee!
Families who have a community

We are now taking orders for this year's
school magazine and have implemented a
new on-line ordering system.
The magazines will be printed this year by local
company, Jeff Oliver Print. By printing locally we are
supporting our community businesses, and it also means
we will have the magazines delivered earlier than in
previous years. We aim to distribute them before the
senior students go on study leave for the NCEA exams.
The cost of the magazine is $20.00. Any family that
wishes to purchase a magazine will need to pre-order
one by clicking on the following link for further information
and the ordering page:
http://form.jotform.co/form/41330505528851
All orders must be received by Friday 15 August.
Advertising: We will be offering advertising space again
this year. Our fee is $150.00 for a full page advert,
$80.00 for a half page advert, or $40.00 for a quarter
page advert.

your business/organisation, or for further information,
