Central Station
WORK STARTS IN SYDNEY YARD AT
CENTRAL STATION
The new underground platforms at Central Station form one of 31 new Sydney
Metro stations being delivered by the NSW Government on Australia’s biggest
public transport project. They will be located beneath platforms 13, 14 and 15 and
will be accessed by a new underground concourse – Central Walk.
The metro platforms and Central Walk will provide
a critical interchange, connecting customers with
suburban, intercity and regional rail services, as well
as buses, coaches and light rail.
In order to build these new platforms and Central Walk,
a new bridge is being constructed to provide access
from Regent Street into the middle of Sydney Yard.

The bridge will initially provide construction access
for Sydney Metro and then, afterwards, will provide
ongoing maintenance access for Sydney Trains.
Providing a new operational entry to Central Station
will improve the station’s interface with the light rail
system and enhance the potential of future precinct
development.

Construction at a glance
Laing O’Rourke has been engaged to design and
construct the Sydney Yard Access Bridge. The bridge
will be around 170 metres long and eight metres wide,
crossing from Regent Street over the intercity rail
lines and into Sydney Yard. The bridge will provide
construction and maintenance access only.
Early construction work is underway to prepare the site and surrounding areas. Contractor,
Laing O’Rourke will mobilise during May, 2017.

Managing noise and vibration
Noise and vibration will be generated by these works;
however steps will be taken to minimise the impacts
on local residents and workers.
These measures include the installation of hoarding
and provision of respite periods where possible.
Traffic and pedestrian changes
Some of these activities will require temporary traffic
and pedestrian changes. The project will manage
impacts by implementing traffic and pedestrian
management including traffic control and directional
signage where required. Some work will be done during
rail possession periods, when trains are not running.
During these possessions, rail replacement services
will be provided by Sydney Trains and NSW Trains,
who will advise of temporary arrangements when
they’re required.
Thank you for your patience
When you’re building a major project like Sydney Metro,
some level of disruption is unavoidable.
While the impacts will be minimised where possible,
it’s important to look towards the end result – a
congestion busting metro that will revolutionise
public transport in our city.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we
undertake these important works.

Central Walk
Central Walk will be a new underground pedestrian
concourse at Central Station making it easier for
customers to get around Sydney’s busiest railway
station.
Central Walk will take customers from a new entrance
on Chalmers Street and the new light rail services direct
to the Sydney Metro platforms and existing Sydney
Trains platforms 16 to 23.
A planning modification to the existing Sydney Metro
Chatswood to Sydenham Project approval will be
lodged for Central Walk in the middle of this year.
Underground metro platforms at
Central Station
The metro platforms at Central Station will provide
a critical interchange, connecting customers with
suburban, intercity and regional rail services and buses,
coaches and light rail.
The underground metro platforms will be fully
accessible for people with a disability, and will include
platform screen doors, enhanced lighting and closed–
circuit television (CCTV) for better security. The contract
to build the tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham
is expected to be awarded around the middle of
this year.

About Sydney Metro
Keeping you informed
Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport
project, delivering more trains and faster services for
customers across the entire city. It will transform the
way people commute, with a train every four minutes
in the peak, fully air-conditioned services and lift
access at all stations.
Notifications will be issued to neighbouring properties
before work starts, and on a regular basis.
Sydney Metro has dedicated community relations
specialists called Place Managers. Their role is to act
as the single, direct contact between directly affected
members of the community and the project team.
Construction is well underway on Stage One – Sydney
Metro Northwest – and now planning approval has been
given for Stage Two – Sydney Metro City & Southwest –
between Chatswood and Sydenham.
