Unit overview
The topic of this unit is hobbies and spare time activities,
such as sports, that students do for fun. In Listening task
one, students will listen to five people talk about the
hobbies they have and the sports they do. In Listening
task two, students will listen to two friends, Pam and Lee,
talking about Lee’s sports club and the things he can do
there. In the speaking activities, students will have an
opportunity to use interview skills and discuss hobbies
and sports.

Shan-Shan, what do you like to do in
your spare time?
Well, I like to collect old movie posters.
I’m not sure why I like them so much. I
just do. Now I have more than fifty in my
collection. I don’t have room at my place
for them anymore. Also, I buy lots of
clothes. That’s why I like windowshopping.
Do you play any sports, Jenny?
Yeah, I play two sports. I’m really into
volleyball. It’s a great sport and so easy to
learn. I’m on the school volleyball team
and when we work together and win a
game, I feel great. We get to travel to
other places and play other teams. It’s
a great way to make new friends. My
other sport is climbing. I like to go on a
climbing wall once a week.
Jason, do you have a hobby?
Yeah, I like to listen to music. I have
about four hundred CDs. I listen to them
and trade with friends. I like music by
new bands, so I go to lots of concerts.
I don’t play any musical instruments, but
I love music. I’m not really into sports,
but I like bowling. I started going
bowling two years ago, and I’m really
good at it.
What do you do for fun, Maggie?
I do photography, but I do a special kind.
I scuba dive and take an underwater
camera with me. It’s expensive but not
too bad if you join a diving club. So
photography and scuba diving are my
two hobbies.
Nobu, what do you do in your spare
time?
I don’t really have a hobby. I just hang out
with friends or surf the Net in my spare
time. I like to chat online and meet other
people and talk. It’s interesting;
sometimes I look at the clock and it’s after
two in the morning.

Well, I play soccer on the weekend and a few
other sports. There’s a big soccer field. I also
play volleyball two nights a week and I play
squash ...
Oh, they have a squash court? I play squash.
Really? The club has three courts. I usually
play squash for an hour every Tuesday and
Thursday, after I go swimming.
Nice. Do you play tennis too? It’s my favorite
sport.
No, I don’t. The club doesn’t have tennis
courts.
What about bowling? Do they have a bowling

Aim
The aim of this section is for students to be able to identify
and distinguish between the sounds /b/, /v/ and /w/.
Students also practice the pronunciation of these sounds in
sentences.
The sounds /b/, /v/ and /w/ are all made using the
lips. They are all voiced consonants, so the throat makes
a buzzing sound. /b/ is made with the two lips coming
together and touching momentarily. The sound /v/, like
/f/, is made by touching the lower lip with the upper
teeth and forcing air out between the two. For /w/, the
lips must be protruded and rounded.

Welcome to the show, Barry.
Thank you, Lisa. It’s good to be here.
Barry, I hear you’re quite a busy guy. In

Busy? Yes, I’m very busy!
So tell us, do you have a hobby?

You collect old jeans? That’s an unusual
hobby.
I have more than three hundred pairs. One
pair is fifty years old!
I see. How often do you go shopping–I mean,
to collect things?
Every day! I go every day. And when the
stores are closed, I love to go windowshopping. I probably go window-shopping
three times a week.
Do you do any sports?
Well, I play volleyball once a week. I also play
soccer twice a week and go bowling two
nights a week. I also enjoy going on a
climbing wall on the weekend.
And scuba diving? Did I read somewhere you
go scuba diving as well?
Oh, yes! I go scuba diving once a year.
So tell me, Barry. Do you ever just ... hang out
