The Sequel - Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls

Volume 68 • No. 1 • Winter 2011

How did your
education at Little
Flower influence
your life?
My Catholic
education at LF
thoroughly prepared me to go on
to attend nursing
Barbara DeCarlo
school and later
Ambacher ’69
obtain my BS in
Business.
The
strict atmosphere taught me to follow
rules and the consequences of breaking
rules.
What would you tell today’s students
they should take with them when leaving LF?
Loyalty and friendships. Never forget what LF has done for you in shaping
your life. Every opportunity you get,
come back and give back to the school.
In a class of over 600 girls, I didn’t know
everyone, but the true friends I made are
still my best friends today.
What was your most significant experience as a student?
My most significant experience was
being in the music department (percussion section) and playing in the band and
orchestra. It was a major commitment of
time, but I think this was my very
favorite thing about being at LF. We
learned each instrument as an individual
but then became part of the whole team.
Who was your role model/mentor at
LF?
I would say the Sisters of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary. I spent the
majority of my time with them since I
was involved in the music program. The

How did your education at Little

your life?
My education
at Little Flower
made me believe
in myself, and
instilled self – confidence that previArlene McKeown

ously was lacking.
I was very shy as a
freshman, but my teachers thought I could
be successful in anything.
What would you tell today’s students
they should take with them when leaving Little Flower?
The memories…I have such fond
memories of my years at Little Flower.
We observed silence on Thursdays,
throughout the day, and there was silence
always in the chapel corridor. Coming
from eight years of public school, I loved
wearing the uniform in an all-girls
school and when sister said to do something, you did it.
What was your most significant experience as a student?
From the first day of school, I was
challenged. I was given two languages
on my first roster despite my mother’s
coming to school to express her anxiety.
Sister said I could do it and I did. I finished with first honors.
My worst experience was when I got
my first and only detention for popping a
bag when there was silence after lunch
for prayers. I learned from that to growup and be a better person.
Who was your role model/mentor at
Little Flower and why?

How did your
education at Little
Flower influence
your life?
My education at LF helped
put me on the
right path to a
good Catholic
life and helped
me maintain my
Catholicism in
my daily life.
What would you tell today’s students
they should take with them when leaving Little Flower?
I would tell the girls, today, to start
with little things and grow from there.
You find it really is in the little things
that we progress, just as our patroness,
St. Therese, told us.
What was your most significant experience as a student?
For me, the most significant experience was learning how St. Therese
strived not so much to do great things,
but just many little things on a daily
basis.

From the President’s desk . . .
Dear Alumnae and Friends!
Happy New Year! May God
look upon us with kindness and
give us peace as we enter the second decade of the “new” millennium!!
As we have just celebrated the
birth of Jesus during the Christmas
season, I am reminded of Blessed
Teresa of Calcutta’s words: “It is
Christmas every time you let God
Sister Donna Shallo, love others through you…yes, it is
I.H.M., LF President Christmas every time you smile at
your brothers and sisters and offer
them your hand.” You are offering us your “hand” every time
you send us a donation from your hard-earned dollars. Daily
you are enabling us to bring Christ’s message to our wonderful teenagers in a safe and happy environment. On behalf of
all of us at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, I
thank you for bringing “Christmas” into our lives here at
Little Flower by your on-going generous support and in particular during the first half of this school year. We have gratefully received over $500,000 thus far towards our budget goal
of $900,000. If you have not yet sent us your Annual Fund
donation, you still have time—may we please hear from you
by June 30?
At the various reunions and luncheons during the first half
of the year, I shared the following with those in attendance
and now I would like all of you to know that we were and still
are saddened over the closing of North Catholic and Cardinal
Dougherty High Schools. Over the summer, the presidents
were invited to walk through those schools to designate items
that would be of use in their schools. From North Catholic, I
asked for the ceremonial crucifix since North was our
"Brother School" and so many of our Alumnae married North
men in addition to the
many fathers and grandfathers who graduated
North. At all of our liturgies, we always pray for
our Alumnae and now
with the North crucifix in
prominent view at Mass,
we have included praying
for the living and
deceased members of
North Catholic's Alumni.
Since his Eminence
Cardinal Dougherty is
the founder and builder
of Little Flower, I asked
for the oil painting
of Cardinal Dougherty
that had been in the
auditorium of Cardinal
Dougherty High School.
Now it is in the front of
Page 2 / Winter 2011
Little Flower's auditorium. We
have 37 transfer students from
Cardinal Dougherty along with 5
faculty members, so I am sure it is
a comfort to them to see that familiar portrait when they are in our
auditorium.
I have some good news to
share with you regarding the
school.
• Before we left for the
Christmas holidays, we received
the formal documentation of our
Middle States Certification—Little
Flower is accredited through
December, 2017! The school will
submit a mid-point review in 3
years. In 2015, we will begin the
accreditation process all over again for the 2017 certification…
• On December 21, Bishop Michael J. Fitzgerald, who oversees Catholic education in the Archdiocese, celebrated Mass for
our school community. In a letter to me, Bishop remarked, “I
was very impressed with all that I saw at the school and the students were very courteous and friendly. It was quite obvious
that the students love their school very much. I commend you
and your staff for all you are doing to see that the girls receive
the best Catholic Education possible.”
• Our students, under the direction of Ms. Brooke Hauer
and Ms. Maureen Gillespie, helped 31 families celebrate
Christmas through their donations to Operation Santa Claus.
Once again, our students responded so generously to the
needs of others. At Thanksgiving time, they supplied food
baskets to 34 families.
• Mayor Nutter initiated his VIP Program a couple of years
ago (Very Impressive Performers). To qualify, students have
to be present and on time every day in the 1st Quarter and
have grades of 90 or above in every subject. I am happy to
report that we had 36 students who qualified.
• Our Model UN students had an excellent season this past
fall. Twice they earned a “gavel” for their outstanding participation—at the Model UN Conferences at Father Judge High
School and at Salesianum.
• For those who live in the area, if you would like to spend
two hours of entertainment back at Little Flower, please
attend our performances of “All Shook Up” Friday and
Saturday, February 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday,
February 13 at 2:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. We have
secured parking☺
Thank you again for your love and loyal support of this
wonderful school. We are so blessed that you hold Little
Flower in such high regard. God bless you!
Fondly,
Sister Donna Shallo, IHM
President
AdvAncement notes . . .
Dear Alumnae and Friends:
The Advent and Christmas
Seasons seem to have passed more
quickly than usual, and a new year
is upon us. I hope when you
receive this Sequel, you can already
say that 2011 has been good to you.
God continues to bless Little
Flower in so many, many ways.
Many of these blessings come to us
through you, our devoted, faithful
Sister
Joan M. Ames, IHM alumnae and friends. Your continDirector of Advancement ued support and generosity to Little
Flower helps award tuition assistance to present Little Flower students. As tuition continues
to increase, and so many families struggle in our present economy, we are even more committed to providing financial aid
to our students. A special thank you to the families of our
deceased alumnae who designated Memorial Donations to
Little Flower.
A sincere thank you to the girls from the classes of ’50, ’55,
’60, ’65, ’70, ’90, ’95, ’00, and ’05 who generously gave their
time and energy to organize their Class Reunions.
Job well done, girls! If you feel inclined to chair or cochair your reunion, I would be more than happy to meet
with you and help in any way possible Please contact me at
[email protected] or at 215-455-6900 ext. 118.
If you live in or plan to visit Florida, California, or
Arizona, Regional Reunions are planned for February
and March. As details become available, they will be
posted on the Alumnae page of Little Flower’s
website:www.littleflowerhighschool.org
During the month of March, we engage in our Annual
Phon-a-thon, which generates about $55,000. We really need
your help to make this venture as successful as possible.
Many alumnae really look forward to hearing the voice of
another alum. Please consider coming to Little Flower for an
evening (or two) to make phone calls. It really is a rewarding
experience.
As a more efficient way of communicating with you, our
alumnae and friends, we will begin using Constant Contact in
the near future. Want to be in the KNOW? Just send your
email address to [email protected]

Dear Alumnae:
Little Flower’s Alumnae Board
wishes each and every member a
Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year.
Best of luck to you and your families
in 2011.
Our Annual Communion Mass
and Luncheon held on November 7,
2010 at St. Peter’s in Merchantville
and The Pennsauken Country Club
Ann Marie
was well attended. Next year, our
Brown Hill ’72
Communion Mass and Luncheon will
be in Philadelphia, at St. Katherine of Siena Parish, on
November 6, 2011. Please mark your calendar.
Joan Schott, once again, chaired the Annual Christmas
Luncheon on December 11, 2010 at Rosewood Caterers and
outdid herself. The gifts were very nice, and everyone had a
great time. Over 175 women attended this “Christmas
Reunion”. Thank you, Joan, for all the hard work involved in
planning this wonderful event for our members.
Please join our members at the Annual Mass of
Thanksgiving at the Carmelite Monastery on April 5, 2011.
The Sisters at the Monastery so look forward to our coming
each year.
Summer Fest, held annually at Westy’s Irish Pub in North
Wildwood, is on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Last year, I
moved the starting time to 5:00 PM to accommodate those
who wanted a “beach” day, or those who cannot get into
Wildwood due to the traffic. This was a big success, so we will
again begin at 5:00 PM. It really is a great time. Consider joining us this year.
The Alumnae Association held its first overnight trip this
past fall. We went to Salem, MA from October 21 to October
23. Jan Paytas, an LF graduate, was our tour guide and did a
fabulous job. She made my job easy. Thank you so much to
her for everything. We had one full bus and all who attended
had a really great time. There was much laughter throughout
the trip; new friends were made; and by the end of the trip, it
felt like we had known each other for years. Thanks to everyone who attended.
Trips for Fall 2011 are in the early planning stage. Further
information will be in the Summer Sequel. If you have any
questions, or suggestions for either an overnight or a day trip,
please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Looking forward to hearing from you.
May St. Therese bless you and your families. Because of
the hard work, support, love and loyalty of the administration,
teachers, students, parents, and of course, our alumnae, Little
Flower continues to thrive. Thank you so much for all that you
continue to do.

policy that is no longer needed? You can donate it to Little
Flower as part of your will.
If you have already included Little Flower in your estate
plans, please let us know so that we can thank you at our
Annual Legacy Society Event on May 19. If you have any
questions, etc. please contact Sister Donna at 215-455-6900,

I would like to thank Joanne Conway Klatt, ’58 for sharing
her reasons for becoming a Little Flower Legacy Society

The final expression of your wishes for your loved ones
and concern for your family and friends is recorded in a will.
If you do not have a will, please make a New Year’s resolution to contact your attorney and/or financial adviser soon to
discuss this important matter.

Why I Joined Little Flower’s Legacy Society
If you are like me, the first thing I
do when The Sequel arrives, is turn to
the back pages to check the postings
of my former classmates. At this time
in our lives, we are reading about new
grandchildren, retirements, and
Joanne Conway Klatt, ‘58 anniversary celebrations. Remaining
connected over the years to Little
Flower has been very important to me.
When the summer issue of The Sequel arrived, I hope you
noticed the bottom of the first page. It read – “Congratulations
to the members of the Class of 2010!” You would have read
about the outstanding granting of awards and scholarships of
over $7,000,000! Only a dedicated and caring faculty, and
committed student body, could have achieved this remarkable
result. We have so much of which to be proud as Alumnae.
For some time now, I have been making donations for the
current needs of the students and the school, but as years pass,
I want to be sure the present students and the FUTURE students have the same opportunity I had, enjoying the special
friendships and the total positive experience of being at Little
Flower. So, I joined the Legacy Society and named the school
in my Will. I invite you to join me in this endeavor. In this
way, we are ensuring that the gifts we give continue to benefit
future students.
When I meet fellow graduates, I always brag about how the
sisters and staff have cared for the buildings. Now, we have
the Fine Arts Building to brag about, too. If you have not been
back to visit the school for a while, I suggest you set a date and
come with a classmate or friend. You will be so pleased to see
how well the school is maintained. To see the enthusiasm,
school spirit, and pride of the young women is quite powerful
also.
By naming Little Flower in your Will you can guarantee
that the students of forthcoming years will be reading the news
of their classmates in the future Sequels.

music program became our life. The sisters taught me discipline while teaching
me how to have fun and enjoy performing. They were patient and always there
for me.
How involved are you in the Alumnae
Association?
Before my daughter, Ann Marissa,
started LF in ‘97, my contribution was
mostly through monetary donations to
ensure that LF would not close. After my
daughter started LF, I was involved in the
Home and School Association and volunteered for activities. It was then that I
fell back in love with the school. I
remained involved through the Golf
Committee and 70th Anniversary
Committee. I’m a member of the Friends
of Little Flower Board (FOLF) and you
can always find me at the front door welcoming prospective students and parents
on registration nights.
What instilled the most confidence in you
to become the person you are today?
I believe my confidence came from
my parents, my Catholic education, LF
(single-sex school) and being involved
in the music department. All of this
gave me the confidence to not fear to try
things, to express my opinion and to further my education. I became a nurse
and then pursued a degree in business. I
used my skills and values as I moved
into leadership roles in my profession.
Little Flower continues to be a handprint on my heart and in my mind.
Sr. Helen Jane was one of my role
models. She taught Latin III and IV.
She was so vivacious and immersed in
the subject. Sr. Zela Marie, my French
teacher, was another mentor. Once the
door was closed only French was spoken. She took time to teach thoroughly.
How involved are you in the Alumnae
Association?
I went to nursing school right out of
Little Flower, then into the Army, got
married, and had children, so I wasn’t
involved with the alumnae in my early
years. Now I’m very concerned with
keeping our school open and contribute
to the appeals.
What instilled the most confidence in you
to become the person you are today?
The academic challenge and the sisters on the faculty instilled confidence
in me. I believed I could accomplish
anything I worked for.
Little Flower and why?
I would say that Sister Elizabeth
Ann, my homeroom teacher in Junior
year had a wonderful influence on me.
After my mother’s death, Sister helped
point me in the right direction.
How involved are you in the Alumnae
Association?
If longevity counts, I have been
involved in the Alumnae Association
since I graduated from Little Flower in
1959, having held all offices except
treasurer. If we as Alumnae expect our
beloved school to continue to educate
the young women of today, we must be
involved.
What instilled the most confidence in you
to become the person you are today?
The attitude and encouragement of the
sisters and lay faculty at Little Flower were
very instrumental in building our confidence; telling us we could excel in anything/everything that we attempted.

Career Day Thank You
On behalf of the 11th and 12th grade student body, the Guidance Office thanks our former alumnae who came back to
speak to the upperclass women about their career choice.
We are so grateful to the following Alumnae who spent part of their day with the students sharing information about
their careers:
Anne Marie Casino, ’00 and Donna Casino-Biddle, ’71—Interior Design
Michele Mazur Cimino, ’85—Nursing
Rebecca Lahn Brennan, ’95—Ultrasound Technician
Chris Robinson Brady, ’70—Communications
Dr. Teresa Tobin, ’70—Podiatry
Mary Kate McNulty, ’06—Music/Dance/Art Therapy
The student body's response was overwhelmingly positive to all of our guest. Several girls felt so strongly about the presentations, that they immediately sought to change their potential college major. Words can not express the value of exposing our students to positive options in life. There will be a spring career presentation to the 9th and 10th grade underclass
women and your support would again be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jack Fitzsimmons
Guidance Director
