Dream. Achieve. Succeed. Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation 2007-2008 Annual Report Helping deserving students achieve their dreams. “With the generous support of the CSF sponsors we were able to invite a majority of the past scholarship recipients to share their journey. It was enlightening for us all to reconnect and see how the scholarships inspired them to get through college and become who they are today.” ~ President, Ned Hertzenberg Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation 652 Main Street Cincinnati, OH 45202 513.345.6701 513.345.6705 fax www.CincinnatiScholarshipFoundation.org Board of Trustees Terrance Ashanta-Barker, Advisor* Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP James Cullen Cincinnati Youth Collaborative Dean Gregory, Vice Chair* Montgomery Inn Boathouse 87 past recipients completed the form to share their journey 304 people attended the CSF Gala 27 past recipients, and their families attended 29 Sponsors contributed $81,250 Ticket sales and In-Kind donations were $11,910 Thomas R. The evening’s events included the announcement of the inductees into the CSF’s “Hall of Fame”, based upon their achievements and contributions, chosen by a committee of the Board of Trustees. The inductees’ stories may be read on our website at www.CincinnatiScholarshipFoundation.org. Entertainment was provided by CSF alum Joel Greenberg and his jazz trio and dinner was a sumptuous buffet catered by Montgomery Inn. Honorary CSF Board Member, Channel 5 News anchor and emcee, Courtis Fuller spent countless hours interviewing current and past recipients for a video shown that evening, providing testimony to the CSF’s impact on those recipients’ lives. Also that night, CSF President, Ned Hertzenberg, was acknowledged for his twenty-five years of dedication to the community of Greater Cincinnati. Thank You To Our Sponsors Courtis Fuller Carl H. In those 25 years, I also have had the pleasure of awarding 1,000’s of local students scholarships that have assisted them to complete their educations which enabled them to join the workforce, get married, buy homes, pay taxes, and contribute back to their local community in a variety of ways. On a regular basis, I run into these students who never forget to thank me and remark on the generosity of the Greater Cincinnati community – something for which I am extremely proud. During this Holiday Season, I would like to thank all of you who have made my last 25 years a truly remarkable “journey.” I have met some amazing people - from CEO’s, to single parents; from college presidents, to high school freshmen; from grateful students to very thankful parents – and I look forward to meeting more in the future. However, I also would like to be able to help more students achieve their goals and join those ranks of home-owning, tax-paying, contributing college graduates. In this past year alone, we had hundreds of qualified student applicants we were unable to assist because of a lack of funds available for distribution. They had financial need, good grades, community service backgrounds, but simply not enough money to continue their educations. And, while I have not heard from, nor expect to hear from, those hundreds of students I was unable to help, perhaps you have. They may be your relatives or children of relatives, your friends or children of friends, your co-workers or children of co-workers – and I am asking for your help in helping them. 25 years ago, the CSF had a saying of “Today’s students, our tomorrow” and they are still “our tomorrow.” Please help me make all of our tomorrows better by making a contribution to the CSF, either by using the form in this Annual Report or by going to our website, CincinnatiScholarshipFoundation.org. The entire Greater Cincinnati community will benefit from your generosity and thoughtfulness. Sincerely yours, Ned Hertzenberg President Journey Shared... By Terrence Strader I learned about the CSF program when I entered Jacobs Center Middle School in 1994 and took part in the stipend program throughout my Hughes Center High School career. I always looked at this program as a way to reward myself for doing well while in middle and high school. I received a stipend check that was based on numerous factors, including grades, attendance, and awards. Therefore, the better I did in school the more I could look forward to in each month’s stipend check. I went on to graduate from Hughes Center in 2000 as the valedictorian of my class and continue my educational career. I grew up in College Hill in a single parent home, with my grandparents always there to support me as well. I was blessed to have my mother and grandparents to support me and push me throughout my educational career. Mrs. Coral Baker and Ms. Alisa Johnson were always there to reach out and help me in any way possible as I went through high school, including applying for scholarships. I went on to receive numerous scholarships, including the Bill Gates Scholarship. I was fortunate enough to get through my 4 year college career without paying anything out of my pocket, with tuition & fees being about $ 40,000/year. I attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where I received my B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Ethnic Studies in 2004. While at MIT I continually gave back to the community, by participating in community service activities, tutoring, and mentoring. Currently, I am a Power & Controls Engineer for the Procter & Gamble Company in Albany, GA. I also take on the responsibility of leading many of the community service activities at our plant including our United Way Campaign, where this past year we raised a record amount of money ($350,000) for the Albany community. I work to help out in my community wherever I can. I currently work on a Boys & Girls Club Executive Board, participate in high school career fairs, tutor, and mentor. I tutor and mentor people ranging from elementary school to college. I’ve also started a small engineering program that aims to encourage kids to head down the engineering career path; it allows them to build small gadgets starting from a circuit board and have fun. This is similar to many programs I grew up taking part in and which clearly guided me into my engineering career field. I will never forget where I came from, struggles I had to overcome, and the people who were there to help me. The Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation Program helped to initially guide me through my road to success; I am very thankful for the stipend program and all of the wonderful people that make up the CSF office. I’ll continually look to give back, passing on the torch, so that the next person can see the bright light of being successful in their near future. Thank you! Students are now required to carry a minimum of a 2.5 GPA to earn a monthly stipend and stipends are now based on academic achievement. Tutoring is also now mandatory for students receiving failing grades. These changes encourage students to work harder in school and to achieve their personal best. AW A R D • I like that students can come to the office for tutoring and it’s a place to study or do homework. CEO • The HSSP encouraged me to maintain good grades and work harder in school. 2008 Annual Awards Banquet Mr. John Barrett Each year the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation honors its most outstanding students who participate in the High School Scholarship Program. Students are selected to be honored at the dinner based on academic achievement and motivation to succeed. On May 5, 2008 the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation honored 44 outstanding students at the Annual Student Awards Dinner. Courtis Fuller, WLWT-TV Channel 5 news anchor, was an inspirational emcee again this year. He welcomed guests and presented the awards to the students. Mr. John Barrett, President and CEO of Western & Southern, was awarded the second annual Champion of Educational Opportunity (CEO) Award. Students, their family members and distinguished sponsors also enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Bell Event Center at the Verdin Bell and Clock Museum catered by Montgomery Inn.
