Chattenden Primary School
Year Two Parental Overview Terms 3 & 4
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families had a great festive period
together.
Below is the outline of work which we will be covering during spring term in Year
2. We will be teaching most of the work through All Round Learning and will
therefore teach around themed topics. Our topic this term will be, “Fire! Fire!”
This will look at the Plague and Great Fire of London. Both exciting and
interesting aspects of our countries history.
Literacy Reading
Children will bring home a coloured level reading scheme book
with their contact book each day. Your child will benefit
enormously if she or he reads at home every night.
A range of non-fiction books will be available from our school
library relating to our topic and other areas of All Round
Learning.
Literacy Children will bring home a blue spelling book daily. In the back
Spelling
of the spelling book will be their group spellings. These spellings
are phonic or sound based and will be tested on a weekly basis.
At the front of the spelling book are your child’s personal
spellings. These are usually words which they have difficulty
spelling correctly in their own writing. Occasionally words will be
included which relate to their themed topic.
Please try to spend a little time each day helping your child learn
to spell these words as part of their daily homework. Their
success is important to their self confidence.

Speaking skills will be developed through children telling stories
and describing incidents from their own experience and retelling
familiar stories. Children will take part in drama activities
through improvisation and role play and they will act out well
known stories. The children will also be given a specific time to
present their ideas and interests to the class. This will relate to
the topic, “Fire! Fire!”.

be focusing on past tense verbs particularly those ending in ‘ing’
and ‘ed’. We will also be learning about the use of the
apostrophe in writing.
Children will be working on a range of topics in numeracy which
will relate to many areas of All Round Learning.
Much of the numeracy work will be practical and links will be
made to all areas of the curriculum where appropriate.
Children will read and write two and three-digit numbers,
describe and extend number patterns, recognise odd and even
numbers, count up to and beyond 100, count objects in tens,
fives and twos, understand partitioning numbers, order
numbers, estimate a number of objects, round numbers to the
nearest 10, add and subtract, begin to learn about simple
division and multiplication, halve and double numbers,
understand and work with 2D and 3D shapes, collect data and
learn about how data can be presented, measure length, weight
and capacity and use scales for measuring them. Please work
with your child to learn the 2, 5 and 10 times table confidently.
We will also recreate our own ‘Pudding Lane Bakery’, whereby
children will be measuring and weighing and problem solving in
a practical way.
We will be focusing on ‘Different Materials’ in science. We will
be investigating changing states – solid to liquid, melting solids
to a liquid. Your child will also be predicting, testing and
investigating what makes a fair test.
Children will be using the computers to create pictures and
posters which relate to “Fire! Fire!”. Various forms of ICT will be

music.
The children will be learning about fire safety which will relate to
our ARL topic. We will also have a visit from the fire service this
