fourth). String, or nothing?

then his pockets with mounting frenzy, pulling contents
out and dropping them wildly.) Where iss it? My precious precious gold Ring! Losstl My Ring! (Gives a
high piercing scream and starts for BILBO.)
BILBO (hastily retreating). Well, if you must know, I
found a Ring. Maybe it's your Precious? Is this it?
(Holds up Ring and puts it on.)
GOLLUM (a cry of fury). My Ring! (GOLLUM is baffled
as to which way to go, for BILBO is now invisible to
him.) Where are you? I don't see you!
BILBO (terrified). Don't be mad. I'll give it- (But
GOLLUM is already almost upon him, flailing his arms
to find him. BILBO ducks and escapes narrowly.)

can just say goodbye to it! (Turns, trips and falls.)
Ouch! (Guided by BILBO's voice, GOLLUM comes very
close. BILBO only escapes his searching hands by rolling away. He rises and steps away cautiously.)
GOLLUM (cupping his ear). I hear his footses! (Moves after BILBO.)
BILBO. Keep away from me! (Moves off at an angle. He is
beginning to suspect that he has a Ring of Invisibility.
He waits, hand on chin, head tilted. GOLLUM blunders
about, not seeing him.)
GOLLUM. Take off the Ring-just for a few minuteses!
BILBO. Take off my Ring of Invisibility-I think maybe

search, but BILBO, now sure of himself, easily avoids
capture. GOLLUM lumbers after BILBO, here, there

BILBO (cupping his mouth and hallooing faintly). Right
here! (Moves quickly to another spot.)
GOLLUM (correcting, but again, too late). Where?
BILBO (another direction). This way! I'm leaving. (Picks
up a small stone and sends it rolling offstage. GOLLUM
is fooled and exits, bounding off rapidly in the direction

hand before my face! (Runs his hands over his body.)
But I can feel myself all right. Now if I take off the Ring
and then I can see my hand and the rest of me, then it's
