THE WIND TURBINE STORY
The project will contribute to Mid Suffolk
District Council's aim to becoming the
country's Greenest County by supplying
green energy to power the equivalent of
3,044 homes.
It also has the potential to offset harmful
carbon emissions by over 8,074 tonnes
per annum.
The two 2.5MW wind turbines have been
operational at Roy Humphrey Group's site
since March 2013.
PROJECT FACTS AND KEY
CHALLENGES
Ÿ With space at a premium, turbine one
is located just 30m away from the
building to the north and 50m from the
building to the south.
Ÿ Due to the site's previous incarnation
as a World War II airfield, it was
necessary to undertake Unexploded
Ordinance Surveys of both turbine
locations prior to construction.
Ÿ The area beneath turbine one is used
critical to incorporate protection
measures into the foundation design to
eliminate the risk of the turbine being
damaged by reversing vehicles.
Ÿ The delivery port for the turbines was
originally planned to be Harwich.
Transportation from here to the site
would have required significant road
modifications along the route.
Following Wind Direct's suggestion, the
port was changed to Goole which
eliminated the need for road
modifications.
TURBINE MODEL
Ÿ The wind turbines are
N100 models. They were
purchased by Wind
Direct from German
manufacturer Nordex.
Ÿ The machines are
2.5MW power-rated
horizontal shaft wind
turbines with a total
height from the base to
the highest blade tip of
130 metres.
FUNDING & OWNERSHIP
The Wind Direct operated turbines were
purchased by Triodos Renewables, a
company that recognises the long-term
business potential of renewable energy.
