PRAYER FOR
MOST PRECIOUS
BLOOD PARISH
In union with the Praying Church we pray: Send
forth the Holy Spirit and renew Most Precious Blood
parish.
O God, in the beginning You created heaven and
earth, and in the fullness of time You restored all
things through Christ. Renew Most Precious Blood
parish now through the Holy Spirit.
You formed us and blew into us the Breath of Life.
Send now Your Spirit into our parish that He may
give new life to our community
Enlighten me and all our parishioners by the Light of
the Spirit and dispel the darkness of our time.
Change indifference into zeal, tepidness into apostolic
fervor.
You introduce us into life and glory through the Holy
Spirit. Grant to the deceased of our parish the joys
of love in the Heavenly Kingdom.
You promised the Holy Spirit, that He might remind
us all that Your Son Jesus Christ has taught us. Send
us Your Spirit to strengthen our Faith, our Hope, our
Love, and our Zeal.
This we ask Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ
Your Son, Who lives with You in the unity of the
Holy Spirit. Amen.

HAPPY NEW BEGINNING
This day that we celebrate has many meanings both
in secular and religious terms, though they really are
interrelated. Whether it is the beginning of the new
year, the feast of the circumcision, the feast of Mary
Mother of God, or the Sunday Sabbath, there is
meaning in each of these celebrations.
The new year brings for most people all kinds of resolutions, not withstanding the fact that relatively few
keep them. Perhaps this is due to the fact that human resolve is not the best way to go about achieving
our goals. We need first to look at our Lady, particularly as it pertains to the circumcision. If you recall
the reflection of two weekend’s back, and St. Joseph’s place in the birth of Jesus, we saw a profound
obedience of faith being lived out. With the circumcision of our Lord the same theme is once again recreated for us. Traditional Jewish law requires the
circumcision of boys. Mary and Joseph dutifully follow the dictates of their faith without question. Similarly, they faithfully kept the Sabbath as a day of rest
but most especially as a day to give God His due glory
and worship. Whether it is Joseph protecting the
Child Jesus and Mary from King Herod, his and
Mary making the arduous journey for the census requirements, Joseph taking Mary into his home even
though he was likely perplexed at first by her pregnancy, he and Mary presenting our Lord at the Temple, all of it was done with obedient faith. Mary is
rightfully called Mother of God not only because of
the Christ she bore in her womb but because of the
Christ she bore and bares through time and eternity
in her heart. Joseph is rightfully called the Patron of
the Universal Church because the Church as the
Bride of Christ, looks to Joseph as one who was and
is faithful in all things.
We need in light of Mary and Joseph’s obedient fidelity to ask ourselves where we are in our own journey
of faith. Can we say that like them we accept and
strive earnestly to live all the teachings of the Church,
not just those that are easy or we agree with? (What
you bound on earth is bound in heaven); Can we say
that we like Mary and Joseph can lay aside our fears
(desires, sins, compromises, excuses) to achieve the
greater goal of union with God (we are called to move
―from glory to glory to glory‖ as St. Paul reminds
us); can we like Mary and Joseph say that we reverence the Sabbath and don’t just put up with an hour
at Mass? (Thou Shalt keep holy the Sabbath).
JANUARY 1, 2017
Think about it for a moment. If we had Mary and
Joseph’s obedient fidelity, their courage and
perseverance in the face of fear and temptation, their
love for the Lord that made everyday a Sabbath
celebration for them, then we may find ourselves well
prepared to achieve the goals of the new year. Of
course, this brings us to another question. What are
our goals? Studies show that the number one goal of
people entering the new year is to lose weight,
followed by more exercise, and other physical/
material things of that sort. They are certainly
worthwhile goals as our Lord wants us to respect our
bodies. What though of the deeper things? Can we
resolve to pray more, not just with words but with a
listening heart, to immerse ourselves in the Word of
God, to be more faithful sons and daughters of the
Church, to be more giving of ourselves, more
charitable. These are things that are accomplished
only by the obedient fidelity manifest in the lives of
Mary and Joseph, not by our willing it.
In a very real sense we are all called to be Mothers of
God. After all, what does a mother do but give life
and nurture it. We are called in the many and varied
vocations of life to also give birth to Christ and to
nurture that faith in our own lives as well as in the
lives of others by our words and examples. Like St.
Joseph we are also called to be patrons of the
universal Church. What is a patron but one who
supports and guards another. We too are called to
support and guard the mission of Christ through the
Church by sharing our time, talents and treasure –
and especially by being faithful to her teachings, life
and ministry. We can see then that the life of Mary
and Joseph is not just about them two thousand years
ago, but it is also about us today.
We oftentimes hear that priests are called to be other
Christs. That is certainly true through the grace of
the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Yet all of us, by
virtue of the Sacrament of Baptism, are also called to
be other Christs. It is not an easy task to be sure.
Yet we have to start someplace. The feasts we
celebrate this day remind us that we may need first to
become other Marys and Josephs before we can
become other Christs, for they are the ones above all
others, quietly and uncompromisingly, became Christ
bearers themselves, and through that fidelity, helped
change the world by bearing the Christ. We are
called to do no less.
Happy New Year and Happy New Beginning to you
and your loved ones!
Fr. John Maduri

A REFLECTION ON HUMILITY
I heard someone say recently that humility can be
defined as “absence of pride”. There is certainly an
appeal to this, as pride is the great flaw in human
nature together with our concupiscence, or inclination towards sin. However, I find this definition to
be extremely limited in its scope and one that does
not capture the fullness of the beauty of humility.
As the “mother and foundation” of all the human
virtues, humility seems less like a lack of something
and more like a fullness of something. Instead of the
absence of some particular evil, it seems to contain
a depth to it.
Dietrich von Hildebrand writes extensively about
humility in his work Transformation in Christ. Now
becoming a spiritual classic, the book’s central
theme is that the principle mission of the Christian
is to be transformed into the image of Christ here on
Earth. Among the path of holiness, there are certain
attitudes which we need to adopt in looking at the
world around us. These attitudes towards the world
help us to grow spiritually and transform us from
the inside out. Humility is one of these attitudes. It
is something we adopt within ourselves which allows us to view reality as it truly is, it is an opening
of oneself up to the world of beauty and truth. The
reason for this is that a crucial part of humility involves understanding ourselves as we truly are. Hildebrand writes that “humility is truth, and the soul
of pride is falsehood.” If we are prideful, we deceive ourselves, and often attempt to fool others.
Everything we have, our possessions and talents, are
gifts freely given to us by God. Though we have to
cooperate with Him in order for there to be results,
this ability to cooperate with a free will is also a
gift. We are so completely indebted to God that we
can take no credit for ourselves.
A beautiful thing about humility is that it is something we can work at, just like any other virtue.
Though it is undoubtedly true that some are born
with a greater disposition towards humility and others less so, it is a gift which can be sought after and
achieved by all, as long as we’re willing to put in
the work for it. Self-reflection and taking time to
contemplate the beauty and goodness of the created
world and allowing it to lead us to God are some
JANUARY 1, 2017
critical paths to achieving this. We must be struck
by wonder by the mystery of it all; to do so we have
to put ourselves at a disposition open to it. This spirit of wonder, feeling small in the presence of something so magnificently bigger than us, is the beginning of true humility.
As a final note on humility, to be humble does not
mean to constantly beat ourselves down. There’s an
old saying, “humility is not thinking less of oneself,
but thinking of oneself less.” It is an awareness that
there are billions of people on this Earth and that
God loves every single one. We are part of something huge, and what an honor it is; a free gift of
God. And when we become small, the Lord is magnified in our hearts. When we do this, we do not
lose who we are, or fade away. We become more
alive; our personalities reach their greatest potential.
We are his little children, and he is our loving
Father. When we abandon ourselves into his arms,
he does not make us fade, but forms us to be fully
alive. This is the great mystery of humble submission to God. By willing Him to be Lord over our
life, we become more alive.
In this New Year, let us strive to let him be the master of our lives and transform us into images of him
here on Earth. May his light shine through us for the
salvation of souls. “Lord, you must increase and I
must decrease!”

THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE
The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is
proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for
the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed
by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the
shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in
love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by
God’s own peace!
Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In
Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is
shown to us and God’s presence is made known to
us in faithful and loving kindness.
