Performance Notes
The text of this choral piece is by one of England’s most famous scholars and poets A.E.
Housman (1859-1936). His poetry describes the joys and disappointments of life in the
English countryside. Composer Eugene Butler captures Housman’s combination of happy
memories and sadness in his music.

The choral tone in this piece should be both jaunty and rhythmic and soft and nostalgic
ending with an exuberant finale. Sharp diction is essential in order to convey the marvelous
poetry to the audience.
With modest vocal ranges, the piece adapts itself to both young and mature men’s ensembles.
