This drawing is a compositional study for the painting Portrait of James-Jacques-Joseph Tissot,
nowattheMetropolitanMuseumofArt,NewYork(accessionno.39.161).Thestudyonverso,a
variantposewithlegsextended,isrelatedtoanotherstudyforTissot’sportrait,nowatHarvard
ArtMuseums/FoggMuseum(objectno.1930.17).
Accordingtothestampsonrectoandverso,thisdrawingbelongedtotheestateoftheartist,and
wassubsequentlysoldin1918or1919atoneofaseriesofDegas’studiosales.
ThefirstknownownerofthisworkwasthedentistGeorgesViau(1855–1940Paris),awell-known
collectorandpatronofthearts.Viaubegancollectingatabouttheturnofthecenturyandwent
ontoassembleoneofthelargestprivatecollectionsofImpressionistandPre-Impressionistartin
Paris. Sales of Viau works took place in 1907, 1909, 1925 and 1930, and posthumously in 1942,
1943and1948.
ThisworkwasacquiredbyHildebrandGurlitt,throughAndréSchoeller,atthesaleofViau’sestate
in1942forthesumof42,000francs.
ThepersonalpapersfoundinCorneliusGurlitt’sSalzburghomeincludeacollectionofabout2,400
photographs of artworks. Photograph no. 7.1_F702 is a reproduction of this work; inscribed on
verso, a certificate of authenticity by André Schoeller of Paris, 13, Rue de Téhéran, dated 1
February1943.
