‘ A n ‘experience’ - that’s what’s in store for the lucky few who reserve a space at kitchenette @ silkscarf winery. In the summer of 2009, chef Tara Buchman began creating personalized meals of magic to match Idan & Roie’s high-quality wines. But she only does it on weekends, only between 11:30 and 2pm, and only for 25 fortunate souls. Roie explains Silkscarf is not in the restaurant business - as they are first and foremost about wine - but Kitchenette allows visitors to take their appreciation of the Manoff wines to the next level. BC Wine Club s Vino Vernacular Quiz What s On Pour This Month With a reservation, visitors will choose the wine they would like to have with their meal. The Editor of this magazine is __________________ www.bcwineclub.ca T he world of art is littered with the carnage of the one hit wonder; a world where musicians, stylists and artisans of kitsch and cool strike it hot, then turn permanently cold. How refreshing it is then to find crafters whose style, whose allure, whose talent is unremitting. How refreshing it is to find people like the Manoffs of Silkscarf Winery. Back in 2008, the BC Wine Club set off to explore the wineries of Summerland. One marked as ‘intriguing’ was the relatively new Silkscarf. Research had told us the Manoff family, consisting of Roie, wife Ruth, son Idan and daughter Einat, had emigrated from Israel in 2003 and had purchased 10 acres of farmland on the Summerland bench. We had also heard Roie and Idan were creating some unique wines of style. Our task, as always, was to determine if they were also wines of substance. S tepping into Silkscarf is to be transported both back and forth in time. Seamless integration of 50s-styled hard goods such as clean stainless steel and simple mason brick work together with new millennium inspired finished concrete and angled leather seating. Everywhere is proof someone with a keen sense of design has been hard at work. Roie explains he and Ruth’s daughter Einat, an architect with a PhD currently working in New York, uses much of her vacation time infusing all things Silkscarf (tasting room, wine labels, Kitchenette and patio) with a style indicative of the wines on offer here; New World meets Old - with a unique twist. We have to admit, back then we were a little suspect of the whole operation when we heard the Manoffs had planted 10 different grape varieties on their acreage. Who can do that many wines well? Further setting the mood for the experience are Ruth and Roie. Despite the fact the main room is constantly abuzz, these two are patient, gracious and engaging with their many visitors. Roie tells us 75% of those they meet are repeat customers - a strong indication they are doing something, actually a lot of things right. When later queried as to why he grew so many, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec and Syrah, the infinitely charming Roie quipped “I know, I know, it is a lot of variety. It is almost illogical to have so many grape types. Many whites, many reds, but it doesn’t matter because all of them are appreciated.”” Which leads us to the wine; is there substance to match all this style and grace? The answer lies on the mantle behind the tasting bar, where bottle after bottle sports ribbons and medals of distinction. Symbols that affirm what we have also found on each and every visit to Silkscarf - these are unique wines, these are premium wines, these are, most definitely, wines of pure substance. This month s unique wines from On the road, we were directed and easily found the busy, and infinitely stylish tasting room using Summerland’s newly erected (in 2008) ‘Bottleneck Drive’ wine route markers. “This is our third season being part of the Bottleneck Drive group.” states Roie, “It has been a pleasure to be a member of it. We (the Summerland wineries) have grown quickly in such a short period. Everyone is friendly and working together. The big wineries and the small ones, we all work to show off this great place. Visitors are always telling me how nice it is to tour here and (Bottleneck) is an important part of that.” silkscarf feature red - 2008 Cabernet Franc feature white - 2010 Viognier companion red - 2008 Ensemble premium - 2007 Shiraz Reserve * * this months premium is by pre-request only
