SCHOOL DISTRICT #202 H C U O T N I KEEPING February 16, 2016 This Week at a Glance Mrs. O’Shea’s Classes Language Arts Our reading contest ends tomorrow! Students will get an update today of their totals and may fill out books slips and take AR tests until tomorrow. Students will be receiving new goal sheets for our third trimester contest! In writing, students will be pulling all of their paragraphs together and working on final revision and editing. They have created a cover page. They may also work on a word cloud to represent the big ideas and character traits of their famous person. In reading, students will continue to synthesize information when reading various types of text. They will also work to write about the ideas that they have researched to try to expand upon their thoughts. We will refer back to the “Ways to Push Your Thinking” anchor chart so that students will integrate theses new ideas seamlessly in their writing about their research. Math This week, we continue our fraction work. Students will complete an exit slip assessing their ability to compare fractions. We have been working on comparing fractions to a benchmark of 1/2 and ordering fractions from least to greatest and greatest to least. We have also been learning games to practice comparing fractions. Ask your child how to compare fractions using just a deck of cards! We will continue to work this week on using common denominators. As a class, we are struggling to quickly see the common factors between two or three fractions. We will list the multiples of both of the denominators and find the common number to start! This Week at a Glance Science… Earth Materials Social Studies… Region Research In the Spotlight/ Second Step Lesson: Lesson 12—Calming Down Anger Important Dates… Mrs. Stefani’s Classes Language Arts Our work with identifying themes in poetry started last week as we completed some PARCC practice. We have been using the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou to follow the steps of close reading. The students are collecting text evidence, looking for patterns and developing new understandings based on the patterns they find. In the end, the students read a sample literary response that was supported with text evidence. They color coded the response to try to see the basic format for these types of responses. They then worked with a partner to try their own written responses. We will continue to identify text structure in nonfiction this week and begin coding the structures in annotations. Finally, the students will have time to edit famous person reports this week, too. Math Angles will be the focus of our lessons during the rest of the week. The class will be asked to determine the measures of angles based on their understanding of the number of degrees in a circle, triangle, straight angle, etc. Protractors will also be used to find exact measures of angles, and they will learn how to draw angles with given measurements. I CAN Statements: I can measure angles using a protractor. I can sketch angles of a given degree using a protractor. I can identify benchmark angles (90°, 180°, 270°, 360°). I can separate angles into smaller angles and add angle measures to make a larger angle. I can use addition and subtraction to find unknown angles.
