The Founder of Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, Mr William (Bill) Nimmo, loved verse and wrote poetry.
He taught his students instructional poems he believed provided sound advice to assist them through life,
such as the one below.
Every Speech Night all Year Six students repeat verse three from the poem ‘I Am True To Myself.’
I AM TRUE TO MYSELF
by Edgar Guest
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don’t want to stand, with the setting sun,
And hate myself for things I have done.
I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself, as I come and go,
Into thinking that nobody else will know
The kind of man I really am,
I don’t want to dress up myself as sham.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men’s respect;
But here in the struggle for fame and pelf
I want to be able to like myself.
I don’t want to look at myself and know,
That I’m bluster and bluff and empty show.
I can never hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscious-free.
ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gift,
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage,
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia Fair!”
COOGEE PREP SCHOOL SONG
Lads who surely know what sport is
Boys who only know what thought is
Tiger, fox and steady tortoise
Coogees face the foe.
Some of us are clever
Most of us endeavour
Not to yearn, the while we learn
For anything that work and us would sever.
Still what e’er the day may bring us
Patted backs or trials that greet us
Here’s the song we’ll always sing as
Coogees face the foe.
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue
May our victories ever be new
But defeat only makes us shout the louder
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue!

Headmaster’s Welcome
Mr Geoffrey Davison - Coogee Prep Patron, Emeritus Professor Rhonda Davison AM, Ms Dinah Ginis – CPS Board
Member, Special guest of honour - Mr Andrew Edmondson, CPS teachers, staff, parents, ladies and gentlemen,
boys, siblings and friends, welcome to Speech Night 2016.
Tonight marks the final occasion in our school year. We are honoured to have our guest speaker Mr Andrew
Edmondson CPS Old Boy and Olympian joining us tonight to present prizes and speak to us on his life and
achievements since leaving CPS. This evening we celebrate the achievements of all Coogee Prep boys,
Kindergarten to Year Six and bid farewell to our Year Six students who leave us to commence their high school
journey.
I would like to thank Mr Geoffrey Davison, the son of a CPS Old Boy (William Dunlop Davison 1921-1928) and
Patron of the School who joins us each year for Speech Night, and his lovely wife Professor Rhonda Davison, who
will be presenting awards this evening.
Speech night is the most important event in the School’s calendar. It gives us the opportunity to acknowledge and
celebrate the boys’ achievements throughout the year. We also look at the enormous contribution and role the
teaching and parent body play to reach this point. It takes the involvement of many to achieve what makes this
School the unique place that it is.
However, tonight is not only a time for reflection on the year, it is a time for looking forward. It is a time to leverage
the good will, progress and positive change, which will continue to drive a clear vision steering the School well into
the future.
At the heart of this vision is a student-centred, value-driven education formed around a comprehensive and rigorous
curriculum. As educators, our goal is to nurture and develop boys into students who are motivated, enjoy learning,
and who go on to fulfil their potential as they move into high school and beyond. It is this combination of knowledge
and academic skills attained in a contemporary environment, underpinned by traditional values and an emphasis on
strength of character that form the core of the education experience at Coogee Prep.
Through the development of differentiated and comprehensive programs and co-curricular activities, we are able to
help all students to recognise and realise their academic, sporting and personal potential. Through exposing
students to the creative and practical arts, we are able to help the boys express themselves creatively, develop new
skills and build confidence through group work, competition and performance.
The success our boys experience in all areas can be measured not only by credible academic and sporting results,
but also by excellent preparation and a huge growth in confidence even when faced with the toughest of challenges.
On behalf of the Coogee Prep Community, I extend our appreciation to The Scots College, for allowing us to use this
Auditorium for Speech Night each year. In 2017 we will be conducting this important event as a speech day, rather
than night. More information will be given next year.
I wish the Coogee Prep community a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday and all the best for 2017.
Mr John T. Dicks
Headmaster
Gentleman
Coogee Prep’s philosophy adopts the traditional values of hard work, self-discipline and respect for others. This
ethos is encouraged in all students. The School Motto ‘Gentleman, Scholar, Sportsman’ captures the essence of
the ‘all-round’ education Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School offers every student.
The current Year Six boys have grown in confidence over the past seven years and are a group of fine young men.
It is their experiences at Coogee Prep that prepare them to take on the next stage of their lives with enthusiasm
and determination. 2016 Year Six are indeed wonderful ambassadors for Coogee Prep, as they prepare to enter
their chosen High Schools.
As an integral part of preparing the boys for high school and beyond, Year Six students take on leadership roles
within the School. We would like to congratulate the boys on performing these roles so well. They have proven
themselves to be leaders amongst their peers as well as excellent role models for the younger boys.

Coogee Prep is dedicated to promoting a high level of academic achievement. We continue to perform well in all
external testing including entrance to Secondary High Schools. It is always pleasing to receive positive feedback
from Senior School Headmasters on the readiness of Coogee Prep Boys for the challenges of high school.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing was conducted for all Year Three and Five students in Government and Non-Government
schools nationally in May this year. The testing focuses on assessing the numeracy and literacy knowledge of
students.
Coogee Prep performed well above the state average in the recent NAPLAN testing. The boys should be
commended on their excellent performance.

Debating
The 2016 Debating Team represented Coogee Prep in the Eastern Regional IPSHA Inter-Schools Debating
Competition. The boys participated in numerous debates covering a wide variety of topics. Under the guidance
of Ms Ticky Fullerton, this debating season was a resounding success with the Team debating competitively and
presenting many strong and compelling arguments.
We would like to thank Ms Fullerton for her valuable help and support with the debating team.

Performing Arts
This year we welcomed a new Music Teacher in the Primary, Mr Jay Jacobs, a multi-talented musician and music
producer. He has introduced the boys to a range of musical experiences including the electric drum kit, guitars, singing
and sound making on the senior boys’ Chromebooks.
The whole School enjoyed an incursion from Musica Viva who performed using Japanese instruments. The Infants’
boys in particular were interested in the large drum called ‘waidaiko’ and could pronounce the names of many Japanese
percussion instruments. Ms Gershon continued to work with the Infants’ classes in Music and Singing and Year Two
enjoyed the introduction of Hand Bells, where they performed ‘Joy to the World’ admirably at this year’s Christmas
Church Service.
Our annual school concert had a distinct Brazilian theme this year in keeping with the Rio Olympics. Scots College
Auditorium was a mass of colour and noise as each stage entertained us with a video clip, dancing and singing. Thanks
to Mr Jacob and Mrs Black for their coordination and planning in the Primary, and also the many percussion instruments
that were made and painted for each class. The school band, coordinated by Mr Travers and Ms Gershon, made its
inaugural appearance, performing two pieces, including ‘Brazil’ which featured a staff percussion solo, led by
Mr Dicks on the samba whistle!
Events such as these highlight the depth of talent at Coogee Prep and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to
provide the platform for the boys to express themselves.
Peer Support
2017 will see the introduction of the Peer Support Program managed by Mr Ryan Gowland. Peer Support Australia
provides school communities with an evidence based, peer led approach to enhance the mental, social and emotional
wellbeing of young people. This will coincide with Alpha Leadership Program for Year 5 & 6 that builds on the foundations
of a responsible and confident young boy with leadership skills who in turn gives back to his community.
The Peer Support Program is a peer led, skills based, experiential learning program. It empowers young people to support
each other and contribute positively to society. The program provides students with a supportive learning environment in
which to develop the skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to improve their mental, social, and emotional
wellbeing.
In 2016, Year Six embraced the ‘buddy system’ with enthusiasm and we thank them for the support and direction
they have given their Kindergarten buddies to help them settle into School life. Year Six contributed greatly through
their leadership to the sporting, cultural and co-curricular activities, ensuring their success across the School.
We congratulate and thank our School Captain Gus Runow and Vice-Captain Zane Hercz, for their exemplary leadership
and commitment to their roles this year.

Student Representative Council
2016 has been a very successful year for the SRC. Every term, two new boys from each class are chosen by their peers
as SRC representatives. This year the SRC were extremely busy raising not only funds but general awareness for different
issues that our community faces. Over the year we have taken part in the Mobile Muster where we collected mobile phones
and accessories to reuse or recycle to raise funds for chimpanzee habitats, Red Nose Day and The Polished Man, raising
awareness for violence against children. Our most recent events have included a sports gala day for Pink Stumps Day,
raising funds for breast care nurses through the McGrath Foundation and lastly our Portrait Fundraiser for St Jude’s School
in Tanzania.
It has been an exciting year for the SRC and over $3000 has been raised over the year. A mighty effort for such a supportive
community the size of CPS. We thank you for all of your contributions throughout the year and look forward to another
positive year for the SRC in 2017.

Sport
Sport continues to be an integral part of life at Coogee Prep. It promotes teamwork, sportsmanship,
communication, acceptance and inclusion. Our inclusive approach to sport gives each boy the opportunity to
participate and develop his skills. All coaches witnessed the boys develop during the year and look forward to
further growth in their nominated sport in 2017.
We thank and congratulate all our coaches for the commitment they showed to their teams and parents who
transported their sons to sport every Saturday and supported them at games and carnivals.
We would like to thank Mr Andrew Travers and Mr Campbell Foss for their efficient co-ordination of the Sports
Program this year. The 2016 Sports Program highlighted the sporting prowess and skills of many Coogee Prep
boys on the field, in the pool and on the track. We also thank the team at ‘Transform - Us’ for running our School
PE program again this year.
Coogee Prep students were involved in a variety of sporting events throughout the year including Inter-School and
CPS competitions. The following pages highlight and acknowledge the boys’ sporting achievements in 2016.

Saturday Sport – Summer
At Coogee Prep every boy is encouraged to develop physically and socially through teamwork. Sport promotes a
sense of well-being and encourages each boy to strive towards his personal best. During Saturday Sport and PE
lessons we aim to teach students to respect their opponents, accept the referee’s decision and understand the
importance of being part of a team.
Coogee Prep Primary boys had a successful Term One and Term Four Summer Sport Series. The 1st X1 team
were undefeated this season. We congratulate the teams and coaches on their achievements this year.

Staff
Coogee Prep continues to go from strength to strength, primarily because of its teaching and ancillary staff and for
this I am extremely fortunate and proud. Our teaching, support and administrative staff are great ambassadors for
our School who uphold and promoted the values, traditions, philosophy and ethos of Coogee Prep within the
School and local community. I cannot congratulate and commend them more highly for their dedication,
professionalism and hard work throughout 2016.
The staff exhibit knowledge, understanding and commitment to a ‘boy’s education’ through exceptional programs
and a balance of sporting and co-curricular activities.
Throughout this year, the staff brought their individual qualities, expertise and passion to school - which in turn set
the platform within their classrooms to inspire, motivate, and instill within the students a desire and enthusiasm to
learn. Teachers have every reason to believe that they do make a difference in the lives of their students!
I sincerely thank our seven classroom teachers for all that they have done throughout this year.
Miss Rachel Verrall (Kindergarten), for bringing leadership and guidance to the Infants’ department through her
collegiality and example, Miss Yvette Beaty (Year One), for her professional approach and caring nature towards
her students, successfully developing their early Numeracy and Literacy skills, Mrs Rebecca Sevier (Year Two),
who brings patience and dedication in preparing her boys for the primary years, Mr Jason Wren-Pattison (Year
Three), for his consistent and positive classroom routines and knowledge of curriculum, Mr Ryan Gowland (Year
Four & Senior Teacher), for the pastoral care and leadership he displays across the School and as an excellent role
model for his students, Mr Carlos Bartelme (Year Five) for his dynamic approach in instilling positive values
amongst the boys and his leadership in ITC and Mr Andrew Travers (Year Six & Sports Coordinator) for his
all-encompassing skills and passion, preparing Year 6 for high school and beyond, along with his innovative sports
and staff initiatives. Mr Stephen Dicks, continues to open up the boys minds to the history, language and culture
on Indonesia and fosters in the boys an appreciation for cultures other than our own. Mrs Tracey Martin has not
only been working in Learning Support and Library, she has had a day a week with Year Six focusing on the formal
structures of the English Language to enhance the boys spoken and written work.
I also thank our part time teachers Miss Celia Morris, Miss Nicole Thrassyvoulou and Mrs Stephanie Selter
who help and support the School tremendously.
Once again, I acknowledge Ms Kerry Gershon, with the utmost respect and admiration for what she does and
brings to the Coogee Prep family on a daily basis. Her exceptional leadership as Deputy Head embraces the
support and pastoral care of both staff and students alike, this along with her meticulous attention to administrative
detail ensures life at Coogee Prep runs as smoothly as possible. I thank her for her continued loyalty, commitment
and support, not only to the School but to me.
I cannot speak more highly of our administrative staff, Mrs Tessa Morris and Mrs Annette Black, who through
their highly organised and focused determination, ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the School at every
level, in particular, by keeping me on track and making sure I attend to the important tasks of the day. They are an
outstanding duo, who on a daily basis readily adapt, problem solve and multi-task to achieve their goals.
Mrs Morris, in the School Office is the administrative heart-beat of our building, monitoring the comings and
goings, keeping the data base and roll books up to date and those endless lines of communication open. As
registrar of the School, she coordinates school tours and admissions, ensuring the smooth transition of new
families into our School.
I also acknowledge our Learning support team of Mr Matthew O’Connor, Mr Stephen Dicks and Mrs Annette Black
who very capably and effectively facilitate programs that assist students to revise, consolidate and meet educational
challenges, predominately in Numeracy and Literacy. Our Mini and Multi Lit programs have once again made a
significant impact for students to further develop and enhance their Literacy skills.
I commend the “After School Care” team of Mrs Annette Black, Miss Sarah Ciftci, Mr Bob McDonald and Mr
Stephen Dicks, for providing a caring and enjoyable service for all boys who attend. They ensure that the boys
complete homework, and enjoy their down-time after a busy school day. Thank you all!
Mr Bob McDonald has once again fulfilled his multiplicity of tasks and duties around the School with great efficiency
and commitment – from running the uniform shop, controlling the traffic, coordinating a clean school environment,
doing the banking and many other behind the scenes events, makes him a most valuable member of our team.
I would like to congratulate our Performing Arts team of Ms Kerry Gershon, Mrs Annette Black and Mr Jay
Jacobs who collectively coordinate both Infants and Primary music lessons, performances and the School band.
This year at our School concert we were able to once again showcase both individual and collective performances of
singing, movement and instrumental work, which demonstrated the depth of enthusiasm and talent across the
School.
Mr Andrew Travers and Mr Campbell Foss have continued to efficiently coordinate the CPS sports program at
Inter and Intra School levels. They ensure that IPSHA draws for the Saturday Sport program and School carnivals
run smoothly and competitively. With many of the changes taking place within our sports program, both men have
been instrumental in making a seamless transition into new sports at new venues.
Ultimately, I have achieved my goal in having the best team of professionals and administrators collaboratively
working to ensure that what we offer here at Coogee Prep is second to none!

Parents and Friends Association
I am amazed that the year has so quickly come to its end. It has been a fantastic mix of all the best things about
Coogee Prep. The School calendar has been full of all the wonderful occasions that make our school unique
and bring our boys the joy of interacting with their parents, grandparents and carers with all the things that they
experience at School.
All of our events are run with the tireless support not only from the class parents and parents to all the teachers
and school staff that make everything that little bit easier. Thank you to everyone, all the parents, the boys and
teachers that come together at all our breakfasts, our raffles, our morning teas and BBQ’S and Fun Food
Fridays (which raised $7500 alone this year!). All your support, all your attendance and generosity on all these
special occasions is appreciated and is also what makes the P&F so successful.
A special mention this year of the Annual Fundraiser ‘A Night at the Races’. What a fabulous
venue and what a fantastic night was had by all. Everyone wowed in their race attire we raised a record amount
for the school in fundraising dollars. Thank you again to everyone for their kind generosity. We are delighted to
report that at the end of 2016 approximately $56,000 (gross) was raised which is a huge amount for a small
School like Coogee Prep.
This money has meant the School could finalise the air conditioning fitout throughout the entire School bringing
much needed respite on hot days and keeping it warm in winter. New furniture has been purchased for the
library, Year Three and Year Five. A proper Green Screen set up for digital filming has also been purchased as
well as books and student resources throughout the School. We have funds in reserve for more purchases in
2017 where the Infants Classrooms will see new desks as well.
I have really loved my last two years on P&F Committee and have Steph Doble and Robbie Risk to thank for
that. We have been a great team and it has been an absolute joy to work with them over the last two years.
We welcome in Nicole Williams, Sarah Sekulov and Natasha Fielding as the 2017/2018 P&F Executive and wish
them all the very best for the next two years.
To all the Coogee Prep parents, teachers and staff, thanks so much for all your support and generosity that have
made the last two years an absolute pleasure.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas & safe New Year.
