VILLA EXTERIORS
Welcome to the Vygekraal estate, a private
villa situated on the Garden Route near
Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Perched on a
cliff in the Robberg nature reserve,
the 5-bedroom castle overlooks the coastline
and sits at the foot of some of South Africa’s
most scenic hiking trails. It’s a place where
guests can forget about the outside world
and get lost amongst the surrounding nature.
In the early 1960’s, a wonderfully eccentric
stone castle was built on a wild and dramatic
sea cliff. The villa was constructed with
stones borrowed from the nearby rock face
and now rests on one of the most beautiful
private properties in South Africa near Robberg
in Plettenberg Bay. Its unique architectural
design and atmosphere, along with its
kilometres of isolated coastline has made
Vygekraal an unavoidable landmark when
visiting the Garden Route.

VILLA INTERIORS
Sitting just above the cliff, the lounge features a
180-degree view of the estate’s coastline and has
relaxing couches, a fireplace and an iPod docking
station. The TV room boasts a flat screen plasma
TV, a DVD player with a collection of movies,
satellite television, and a Bose music system with
tunes for every occasion. The villa also has free
Wi-Fi Internet access and a full set of board
games. The entire villa is available for the
exclusive use of a maximum group of ten guests.
There are four double suites, which naturally
all come with stunning views. It also has one
bedroom with two single beds and a separate
bathroom. The villa is decorated in a comfortable
and creative fashion, with a subtle hint of luxury.
Cushions are laid out every day on the palisade
cliff top terraces, so you can sunbathe whilst
listening to the waves breaking below. Find your
own rhythm in the constant ebb of the ocean and
the wind.

MASTER BEDROOMS
The Villa has four master bedrooms, each with an
en-suite bathroom and equipped with bathrobes,
towels, hairdryer, toiletries and insect spray.
All 4 bedrooms have queen-sized beds with
spacious layouts and great views. The rooms
also have big sliding windows to allow in the
ocean breeze. Each bathroom has a bath, toilet,
a shower, double vanities and heated bath rails.
There are also three outdoor showers: two
accessible through the bedrooms and one by the
pool. All bathrooms and bedrooms have the finest
quality materials, fabrics and cottons to create
a luxurious and comfortable experience. If you
have an allergy to down, hyper allergenic duvets
and cushions are available from the housekeeper
upon request.

STAFF
At Vygekraal, our team of experienced and
friendly staff members will be available to
attend to all our guests’ requirements that
may arise at any time during the stay.
Our household staff members seek to
provide guests with personal and discreet
service, whilst ensuring the house stays well
managed and clean. The Villa comes with two
full-time staff members, William and Fellen,
who will oversee and attend to all your culinary
and household needs. Jenni and John live on
the estate and are here to provide guests
with assistance for traveling, transport and
administrative advice. Further staff-members
are employed when larger groups arrive,
so there will always be plenty hands to help.
Gilly, Tata and Luna are the estate’s guardians.
These three dogs will always try to escort
guests on their walks or hikes and each has
their own sweet and playful character.

FOOD
Our fully trained cook William will create
healthy and delicious meals that will tantalize
your taste buds. His specialties include fresh
fish and seafood served with local vegetables.
Herbs and salads are grown in our own
vegetable garden, while pizzas (possibly the
best this side of Italy) and Portuguese chicken
are roasted in our own wood-fired pizza oven.
Barbecues done on our outdoor grill is another
favorite. William is a specialist in vegetarian
and low fat cooking, so you can discuss the
menus with him and choose what you would
like to eat. The shopping and cooking for
lunch and dinner are not included in the
rental, but full catering can be arranged upon
request. Breakfast however, is included.
THE ESTATE
The estate is covered with coastal Fynbos, the Cape’s unique
floral kingdom. To put this into perspective, there are six
times as many varieties of flowering plant in the Fynbos
ecosystem as in the whole of the British Isles. Hiking on the
estate will suit all types of nature enthusiasts, as there is
a wide choice of trails ranging from pleasant walks to the
more daring hiking routes.

Whales, dolphins and seals can be spotted swimming
beneath the villa’s terraces or living room windows.
We also host a family of sea otters that live in the
dam alongside Vygekraal. Dassies, a type of large
rabbit related - strangely enough - to elephants,
dart among the rocks and baboons visit the estate
from time to time, but are luckily shy to humans.
Although Vygekraal harbors a variety of animal life,
the estate is largely famous for its birds, particularly
kestrels, brilliantly coloured nectar feeders and
common sea birds. Accessing the coastline below is
an adventure in itself, as one will need to travel
through an age-old cave. The Vygekraal villa is built
above a vast coastal cave, which was inhabited by
Stone Age men for millennia. There is a fascinating
collection of artifacts from the cave on display in
one of the villa’s bedrooms.
