EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION (EC)
#1: What is emergency contraception?
Emergency contraception (EC), often known as the “morning-after pill,” is taken to
prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It works best if it is used as soon as possible, but
it can be taken up to 72 to 120 hours (three to five days) after unprotected sex.
#2: What types of EC are there?
Plan B®: Plan B is the only product on the market that is intended solely as emergency
contraception. Plan B consists of two pills that contain progestin (levonorgestrel), a
synthetic hormone used in many birth control pills. One pill is taken as soon as possible
after unprotected sex, the other twelve hours later. Recent studies have shown that women
can take both pills at the same time, with no increased side effects or decreased efficacy.
Regular Birth Control Pills: Certain brands of daily birth controls pills can also be used
as EC. Please consult the chart below. The dosages and colors listed are for brand-name
pills only. If you have generic pills, consult with your health care provider to get the
proper dosage.

The Copper-T IUD: The IUD (intrauterine device) may be inserted by a clinician up
to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex for use as emergency contraception. The
clinic directory in this resource guide is meant for access to emergency contraceptive pills only,
not IUD insertion. Please consult with your health care provider for more information
about this option.
#3: How does EC work?
EC can work in several ways. They include:
• Stopping the ovary from releasing an egg.
• Thickening the mucus in the cervix so sperm can’t get through.
• Changing the lining of the uterus so that a fertilized egg can’t attach and become a
pregnancy.
#4: When should EC be used?
#5: Does EC cause an abortion?
No. EC should not be confused with Mifeprex® (RU 486), which is commonly known
as “medical abortion” or “the abortion pill.” EC prevents a potential pregnancy and will
not work if you are already pregnant. Mifeprex, on the other hand, terminates an existing
pregnancy up to nine weeks. If you are interested in finding out more about medical

There are many instances when you may need EC. Some examples include:
• The condom broke or slipped off.
• You forgot to take your birth control pill(s), or you started the pack late.
• You were one week (or more) late for your Depo-Provera® shot.
• Your IUD fully or partially expelled.
• He didn’t pull out in time, or he ejaculated on the outside of your vagina.
• You did not realize you had to use protection the first time you had sex.
• You were under the influence of alcohol or other substances and do not know if you
had sex and if you used protection.
• You did not communicate well with your partner, and it was unclear to him that you
were not on birth control.
• You were sexually assaulted or raped.

#6: Does EC have side effects?
Some women have mild and temporary side effects with EC. Side effects are less common
with Plan B than they are with birth control pills. (Plan B contains only progestin, while
many birth control pills contain progestin and estrogen, a combination that is more likely
to cause side effects.)
Side effects can include:
• Upset stomach or vomiting
• Headache or dizziness
• Sore breasts
• Spotting (drops of blood in your underwear) or irregular bleeding
You may have less trouble with nausea if you take EC with food and liquids. If you have
vomited the pills, get another dose and take it with an anti-nausea medication
recommended by your health care provider.
#7: How effective is EC?
#8: Who should not use EC?
EC is safe and effective for most women. You should not take EC if:
• You are already pregnant, because EC will not work.
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Plan B or birth control pills.
• You have abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been evaluated by a health care
professional.
#9: What are the advantages and disadvantages of using EC?
Advantages
• EC can prevent pregnancy up to 72 to 120 hours (three to five days) after unprotected
sex.
• Almost any woman can take EC.
• EC has the potential to prevent unintended pregnancies and abortions.
Disadvantages
• EC offers no protection from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you have had
unprotected sex, it is important that you get tested for STDs, including HIV. Please visit

EC is not 100 percent effective. It works about 75 to 89 percent of the time, depending
on which method you use, when during your cycle you had unprotected sex and how
soon you take EC after unprotected sex. The sooner you take EC, the more effective it
is. The first twenty-four hours are crucial.

• EC is less effective than correct and regular use of birth control methods. EC should
not be used to replace the regular birth control methods that are available.
• Although mild and temporary, there are some side effects.
#10: What if I have taken EC and I’m already pregnant or become
pregnant?
Emergency contraception will not work if you are already pregnant—that is, EC will not
cause a miscarriage or abortion. The American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (ACOG) has stated that EC is ineffective once a fertilized egg has
implanted in the uterus. Furthermore, studies have shown that EC will not harm a
developing fetus.
#11: When should I expect my period?
If you suspect you are already pregnant, or if EC fails and you become pregnant, you
should visit your health care provider. The NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado website also

#12: Why should I keep a supply of EC on hand?
Because EC is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, medical and
health professionals strongly urge that you obtain an advance prescription of EC to keep
on hand in case you should ever need it. Any physician, physician’s assistant, nurse
practitioner or nurse midwife can write a prescription for EC.
Most EC will keep for a long time; Plan B’s shelf life is forty-eight months (four years)
from the date of manufacture. The shelf life of birth control pills varies by brand. Always
check the expiration date on the packaging!

After you take EC, you should get on a reliable method of birth control if you are not
already. Your next period could be early or late, and it could be light or heavy. Visit your
health care provider if:
• Your period does not start within four weeks after taking EC.
• You think you are pregnant or have signs of pregnancy, like nausea, fatigue and/or
breast tenderness.

#13: How much does EC cost?
This depends on whether you receive EC directly from a clinic or get your prescription
filled at a pharmacy. Our research has found that the cost can vary, but the average price
is about $32.00 for only the emergency contraceptive pills. (Please contact the clinic
directly to find out if there is an additional cost for an office visit, exam, etc.)
NOTE: At Planned Parenthood clinics or public health departments, you can often get
EC directly at a low or reduced cost, depending on your financial need.
#14: Will my insurance company reimburse me for EC?
Reimbursement for EC, like reimbursement for other prescription contraceptives, varies
greatly. Many HMOs and private insurance plans cover the cost of contraceptives; others
do not. Generally speaking, if your insurance company covers the cost of oral
contraceptives, it will also cover the cost of EC. Check your plan now, so you know whether
Plan B or birth control pills are covered.
#15: Does Medicaid reimburse for EC?
In Colorado, Plan B is not covered by Medicaid, but birth control pills are.
In addition to the clinics and pharmacies listed in this guide, www.getthepill.com
provides prescriptions for emergency contraception. After taking a medical history to
determine eligibility, this online service will phone in a prescription to a local pharmacy.
The cost of the online assessment is $24.95 and does not include the price of pills. (There
is no fee is you are denied a prescription.) This website is available twenty-four hours a
day; prescriptions are only submitted from 9 am to 8 pm (EST) Monday through Friday
and from 9 am to 6 pm (EST) Saturday and Sunday. You must be a U.S. resident and at
least eighteen years or older to use this service.
#17: If I’m under 18, do I have to get my parent’s permission to take
EC?
No. In Colorado, women under the age of eighteen have the legal right to access birth
control services, including EC, without the consent or notification of a parent. There are
a number of teen clinics listed in this guide that specialize in confidential care for young
women.

#18: What should I do if I have been raped or sexually assaulted?
If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, EC can help to prevent the additional
trauma of an unintended pregnancy.
If you have been assaulted, please:
• Get to a safe place.
• Call 911.
• Do not bathe, brush your teeth, use mouthwash, douche or wash your clothing (to
avoid disturbing DNA evidence).
• Call a friend or family member to be with you.
• Call a rape crisis line for support, information and referrals.
If you do choose to report a rape, it is best to go to your local hospital immediately to
have a sexual assault exam. Some Colorado hospitals have trained medical staff called
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), who provide rape survivors with a
comprehensive exam. The SANE exam includes collection of bodily evidence, treatment
for STDs and referrals for counseling and/or additional emotional support. You should be
offered EC during the exam. If you are not given the option of taking EC, please ask about it.
#19: What should I do if the pharmacy does not have EC?
If the pharmacy you are visiting does not have Plan B, you have three options:
• Have the pharmacy place an overnight order for the medication (most pharmacies can
have medication delivered within twenty-four hours).
• Find another pharmacy that does stock Plan B.
• Call your health care provider and get a prescription for birth control pills that can be
used for EC, then have the pharmacy fill that prescription.
NOTE: Wal-Mart pharmacies will not stock or dispense Plan B. However, Wal-Mart will
fill prescriptions for birth control pills, of which certain brands can be used as EC. Our
research shows no policy restrictions on dispensing EC prescriptions at other major chain
or supermarket drugstores.

#20: What should I do if the pharmacist refuses to fill my prescription?
Pharmacists have the right to refuse to fill any prescription or dispense any medication.
Some pharmacists may refuse to dispense EC based on their moral or religious objections,
while others simply may not stock Plan B because of a lack of demand. Under current
laws, pharmacists are also not obligated to provide a referral for a pharmacy that will fill
the prescription.
We would hope that a pharmacist’s rights would not override the patient’s right to
treatment. Although pharmacists may excuse themselves from situations for personal
reasons, they should work to ensure that patients receive needed services.
The APhA (American Pharmacists Association) has a protocol in place that supports the
right of pharmacists to refuse a prescription; however, these polices clearly state that it is
the responsibility of the pharmacist to ensure an alternative system so that the patient has
access to legal medication.

takes your prescription from you and/or refuses to provide you with a referral to a

• Ask if another pharmacist at the same pharmacy will fill the prescription.
• Ask for a referral to another pharmacy in the area that will fill the prescription (or look
