Simon Says
In 1980, operation Eagle Claw – the
attempt to rescue 53 American Embassy
personnel held hostage in Tehran since
November 1979, failed. The operation
failed, in part, because each service
wanted a part of the action, but none
would submit to coordinated training.
The Marine Corps insisted that its pilots
fly helicopters into Iran from the aircraft
carrier USS Nimitz. But the Air Force
special-warfare helicopter pilots had more
experience flying long distances and their
helicopters were better suited for the
mission. However, the Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs had no authority to order the
more logical choice – using special-warfare helicopters.
At dawn on April 24, 1980, in the Iranian
desert, the rescue attempt was aborted
after three of the mission’s eight helicopters became disabled. In evacuating, a
helicopter flew too close to the ground,
and slammed into a transport plane which
burst into flame, killing eight men.
Success
Success is a ladder that cannot be
climbed with your hands in your pocket.
