CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Figurative language is rhetorical language in that it tries to create effects by breaking or exploiting language rules. Figurative language refers to word or groups of words that exaggerate or alter the usual meaning of component words. Every language has its own figurative language, so there are different types of figurative language and also different way to translate the meaning of every figurative language into target language. Figurative language usually used to describe something good or something bad. To represent the writers feeling, they use figurative language to support or make it more interesting. Larson (1997) states that a single word may have various senses and those senses are signaled by the context. Larson (1997) stated that there are many kinds of figurative language such as metonymy, synecdoche, idioms, euphemism, hyperbole, metaphors and simile. Because of that there are something different about how to use it with different meaning. In the other side, learning about figurative language also means that we learn about human language which has another meaning. Besides, figurative language could be compared to some sounds, trees, animals, people and many kinds of nature. So that the words or sentence more nicely. One of the figurative language like simile present two comparison in the semantic structure. It is referring how to uses the word ‘like’ or ‘as’ to make the comparison within one thing to other things, and also to compare one object with another to suggest they are alike. A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two things and always stated clearly through the comparison by using of the word ‘like’ or ‘as’. Besides, the correct understanding of similes depends on the correct identification of the image, topic and point of similarity. The important thing is the meaning in the source text must be discovered first, because the comparison will be found when these have been identified. In analyzing simile, it is very helpful for us to write out the propositions which are basic to the comparison. The analysis of simile becomes the main concert in this writing because in the novel, there are many words or languages that have implicit meaning so we should study further to know what the simile exactly means. By knowing what the meaning of simile that used in the novel, it will be easier to understand. This writing is relevant to be discussed because in fact, most readers are usually confused about the information carried out by the novel. Novel is usually presented in various ways and use a lot of figurative language and meaningful words that are used to represent the written feeling. In reading novels, the sentences in the novel should be understood, so that the meaning or the message of the novel can touch the reader. The novel was chosen because it provides of many similes that can be analyzed. 1.2 Problems of the Study Based on the problems, the problem of this writing can be determined as follows: 1. What types of similes are found in The Novel The Serpent’s Shadow? 2. What are the translations of similes found in the (SL) and the ones found in the (TL) ? 1.3 Aims of Study Based on the problem above, the aims of this study as the following: 1. To identify the types of similes that found in The Novel The Serpent’s Shadow. 2. To analyze the translation of similes from SL into TL that found in The Novel The Serpent’s Shadow. 1.4 Scope of Discussion In analyzing a literary work, especially a novel, the reader should be able to read the novel carefully. A novel is generally rich in meaning expressed in a minimal way of expression. The scope of discussion in this present study is limited only about figurative language, especially simile, so it limits the analysis of simile to the following: 1. The types of simile that used in The Novel The Serpent’s Shadow by Rick Riordan. 2. The translation of similes that used in The Novel The Serpent’s Shadow by Rick Riordan according based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Larson. 1.5 Research Method Research method in this study is consist of data source, method and technique of collecting data and method and technique of analyzing data. 1.5.1 Data Source Data are important for every research to support the discussion of problem. Data source means that the source from which the data is obtained for the analysis of this study. The data of simile for this study taken from novel entitle The Serpent’s Shadow written by Riordan, published by Disney Hyperion Books in 2012, 114 Fifth Avenue, New York. The Serpent’s Shadow considered as primary data. The Serpent’s Shadow is the third book by Riordan. Besides, the Indonesian version of The Serpent’s Shadow translated by Liza and Farihah is also used as secondary data. The reason why this novel had been chosen to be analyzed because In English there are some figurative language which have different functions and meaning which can make a figure of speech. And in this novel, many examples of similes can be found, where figurative language especially simile is not easy to understand. Therefore, the message or the meaning which given by the writer can be understood. 1.5.2 Method and Technique of Collecting Data The method that used to collect the data is library research. This method complete by some steps, there are; First data taken by reading attentively to understand with the focus of simile in the novel, then the word, sentence or phrase that contains simile classified in accordance with their types and point to be highlighted to make the identification more easier and after that analyzed the data. 1.5.3 Method and Technique of Analyzing Data The method in analyzing the data is qualitative method. There are some steps taken here in analyzing the data; first, the data analysis started by classifying the data into the types of simile. After that, all the data explained in order to get the clarification and meaning of figurative words. By analyzing the data of the novel that consist of simile, what the novel means by the writer could be interpreted. The data then analyzed using the theory from Larson (1997).
