How to...
It’s Christmas! WHO DOESN’T WANT TO DO GOOD?
That’s the great thing about this time of year, everyone’s already thinking in terms of
“Good Will for All Men” - no arm twisting required. Whether it’s giving to charity,
smiling at strangers or as Burl Ives would put it, “say hello to friends you know, and
everyone you meet!” DOING GOOD is just part of the fabric of the season… A no brainer,
if you will.
But every year, don’t we always hear someone, maybe even you, saying something like
“if ONLY we could make this Christmas spirit last all year long, wouldn’t that be great?”
And we try, we really do. But somehow, despite our good intentions, after spending a
month over-doing EVERYTHING, including trying to cram in as many good deeds as we
can within the space of a month, we get a little worn out and sometimes even forget
why we’re doing it in the first place.
This year we want to be a little more intentional than that. Why ARE we doing good,
anyway? Shouldn’t it be more than just generating fuzzy feelings, or checking off a list of
stuff we feel obligated to do? We think so. Titus 2 says it beautifully: “The grace of God
has come to offer salvation through Jesus, and teach us how to become his own people,
eager to DO WHAT IS GOOD.” That’s what Christmas, and come to think of it, the rest of
our lives, is really all about!
And that’s why you are reading this little “How to” booklet. Of course, we know you
already know HOW to do good, so think of this as an invitation to get to the “Why”
behind the “How.” The following pages are designed to encourage you throughout this
season with some thoughts about a few key Christmas themes, and ways you can make
“Doing Good” a meaningful experience for yourself, your family or your small group. Our
prayer is that this will be a useful tool for God to work His Good in and through you!
Oh, and as you embark on this journey, don’t forget to share your stories on

How to DO GOOD… and Give Thanks
“Thank you for this food.” “Thank you for my home.” “Thank you for my family.”
Giving thanks is a good thing. So good, in fact, we give it a whole day on our calendars
every year. Ok, maybe more like half a day squeezed in between the mad dash to get
dinner on the table for the 18 guests coming over and gearing up for the Extreme Sport
of Black Friday shopping… oh, yeah, and the football game.
The point is, for all of our crazed, hectic lifestyles, we all still recognize how important it
is to stop, take a deep breath, and count our blessings, even if it is only for a few hours
once a year. Because let’s face it: sometimes it’s like we have amnesia, and we need to
take some time every now and then to remind ourselves of how blessed we really are.
So here’s a crazy thought: What if we actually took decisive action to EXTEND
Thanksgiving… beyond the leftovers, beyond the heartburn, beyond the survival
maneuvers at Wal-Mart and became intentional about cultivating gratitude for a
WHOLE WEEK? What would that look like?
What if we went beyond the generic “God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our
food” (which is an excellent thing to be thankful for, by the way!) kind of confessions,
and got specific? As in, being mindful of the dozens, even hundreds of “little” events
that happen in your day, every day… little snapshots of God’s grace you barely even
notice, but without which the picture of your life would be far less vivid, and not nearly
as blessed?
Things like the quirky little mannerisms you love about your spouse, your kids, or your
best friend. Or the surprising kindness God shows you through a friend, or better yet, a
stranger. How about undeserved mercy from an “enemy”? Even the storm you just
faced, or might be facing right now, and how God showed up (or is showing up) in the
midst of it? The truth is we can find a reason to give thanks in any and every situation,
because of His presence that makes ALL things GOOD.
The list is endless. Which brings us to our first DO GOOD Challenge. This coming week,
here are some ideas of ways you can keep Thanksgiving going in your heart, along with
some discussion questions you can go through individually or with a group. Of course,
they’re
just
suggestions.
You
probably
have
even
better
ideas!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to DO GOOD by being INTENTIONALLY
THANKFUL this week, and see what GOOD God does through, and more importantly, TO
you!
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1

1-2-3… Be Thankful!
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about being thankful. You might know more!
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Psalm 136, Romans 1:21 and 8:28-32, Philippians 4:6, Colossians 3:15-17,
1 Thessalonians 5:18, James 1:17
REACH OUT:
GOOD
Gather a group. Pass out index cards. On one side of the card pre-write someone’s
name. Leave the other side blank. Ask everyone to write ONE THING they appreciate
about the person on their card. Make it fun and try to guess who is who!
GOODER
Think about the “take for granted” people in your life: your waitress, mail carrier,
custodian, parent, kid… you’ll think of someone! Pick one.
1) Pray for this person every day for a week.
2) Write them a THANK YOU note.
GOODEST
Think of someone who has presented a challenge in your life. Prayerfully ask God how
you might genuinely THANK (yes, THANK) this person... What if you did something really
crazy and blessed them?
REFLECT:
When you think about the things you appreciate about a person, how does that connect
to appreciating God… not just for what He does… but who He is?
What did God show you about thanking “challenging” people or those you take for
granted?
Is there a relationship between Romans 8:28-32 and cultivating gratitude?
What has God shown you about yourself in this process? What has He shown you about
Himself?

How to DO GOOD… and GIVE
Question: Is it better to give, or to receive?
Be honest, now. No one’s looking over your shoulder. We all know what the RIGHT
answer is, but when it comes to giving, what do you REALLY believe?
Is saying you’re ok with no presents under the tree with your name on them? Or that if
someone offered you a 60" 1080p 120Hz Slim LED Smart HDTV or, a two-week, allexpenses paid trip to Maui you’d be like “no thanks, why don’t you just pass that on to
someone else”?
Not that most of us have to worry about that little dilemma but the truth is, if we’re
brutally honest, there’s a little kid inside most of us who gets excited about the prospect
of receiving something big and amazing.
But what if you already had everything your heart desired… AND… you were in a
position to give something big and amazing to someone else? To see the look of sheer
delight on their face and to know you had a part in it… wouldn’t THAT be something?
How can you even compare that kind of joy to anything else?
The truth is, for us whose lives have been invaded by Jesus Christ, we are actually IN
that position. We do HAVE everything our heart desires. We have HIS LIFE. IN US.
EMMANUEL: God with us. It doesn’t get ANY better than that!
And the beauty of passing this gift on is, the more we give Him away, the more He fills
us up with His love, His joy, His peace, His patience. There is an old saying that you
CAN’T out-give God, and you know what? It’s true!
It really, truly IS better to give than to receive, when you are giving the gift that NEVER
fails, NEVER breaks, NEVER runs out of batteries, NEVER leaves, NEVER forsakes… the
GIFT WHO KEEPS ON GIVING! EMMANUEL: GOD IN YOU!
Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is to DO GOOD by BEING
GENEROUS… with the gift of Jesus in you… and see what GOOD GOD does through, and
especially, TO you!
“In Him we live and move and have our being…” Acts 17:28

1-2-3… Be Generous!
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about giving. You might know more!
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Proverbs 3:27-28 and 21:26, Luke 3:10-11, Luke 6:38, Romans 8:32,
2 Corinthians 9:6-8, Ephesians 2:82
REACH OUT:
GOOD
You’re making lots of cookies right about now, anyway, right? Why not make an extra
batch and deliver it to your neighbor or a shut in along with an encouraging note or
card? Oh, and for you non-bakers, this works with store bought cookies, too!
GOODER
Is there someone you can give the gift of your time to, and maybe help them with a
chore or an errand to help ease their holiday stress? Or, what if you picked a place to go
for a prayer walk, and asked God to use you to bless someone along the way?
GOODEST
Can you think of one person you could commit to spend on-going time with? Maybe
meet for coffee on a regular basis, listening, encouraging, challenging… That’s what a
MENTOR does! Why not you? You have lots to offer someone!
REFLECT:
When it comes to “giving”, what is more of a sacrifice to you: Your money or time?
If you had the means to be wildly generous, what would you give to whom and why?
Think about God’s extravagant generosity, literally holding nothing back from us. Is it
even possible that we could live the same way? What would that look like?
What have you learned about yourself this week? About God’s character?
Ever thought about giving the gift of yourself to a child or family in need?

How to DO GOOD… and Go against the Flow
There are two kinds of people in this world: JOINERS and REBELS.
Which category do you fit into?
If you’re waving your hands wildly and reaching for a “Hello, My Name is…” tag to fill
out, then you already know where you belong. And if you’re thinking “Hey, don’t try to
put ME in a category!” it’s safe to say we all know where you belong.
We all have our role to play. But when it comes to the madness of the holiday season,
and all the commercialism, materialism, over-indulgence-ism (ok, that’s not a word) and
general C-R-A-Z-I-N-E-S-S… most of us, if we’re painfully honest, can’t seem to help
ourselves. As much as we resolve to stay strong, and keep it simple and as hard as we
try to resist that all powerful, swirling vortex of Christmas-mania, somehow we still get
sucked in. (Yes, even you rebels aren’t completely immune.)
In a sense, we’re all joiners when it comes to giving in to the culture this time of year.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. It just takes a little intentionality, and focusing that
pent up joiner/rebel energy like a laser beam in the right direction. Starting with a
simple question:
What REALLY matters? Is it the stuff? The food? The Martha Stewart-like holiday swag?
Really? Bet you anything, if you think long and hard enough, Christmas isn’t about any of
that at all. But it IS about making memories, and sharing the joy of Emmanuel’s arrival
on the scene. The stuff, the food, the swag… all that’s nice, but it’s really just window
dressing. It’s the people inside the window that count. You know that. You’ve always
known that.
So what if you spent your holidays centered around people, period? As in, spending
more TIME than money. And instead of spreading yourself thin with the masses,
focusing in on a few meaningful interactions? How different might this season look?
How might your bank account look, let alone your blood pressure?
Your mission this week, should you choose to accept it, is to DO GOOD by saying NO to
all the hype and YES to the HEART of Christmas. Maybe even do something radical. Go
against the flow… and see what GOOD God does in you… and through you!
“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD.” Isaiah 55:8

1-2-3… Be Counter Cultural!
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about God’s way, not our way.
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Proverbs 3:5-7, James 1:22-25, Matthew 5-7, John 18:28-37
REACH OUT:
GOOD
What if you “fasted” from shopping this week, and instead, used that time to find
perfectly good stuff in your home that you don’t “need” and find someone (or
someONES) who could use it? Key: it has to be NICE stuff!
GOODER
What if your family decided each to give up one present this year, and instead used
those resources to bless someone else? Here’s the catch, though. Instead of just
dropping it off in at a drop-box, how could you make it more personal and relational?
GOODEST
What if you invited your neighbors over for a “Take a Break from the Holiday Madness”
open house, where the only expectation is that they show up, have some hot cocoa and
cookies, take a deep breath and… relax? Build some relationships!
REFLECT:
What do you find the most challenging thing to resist giving in to, when it come to the
expectations we all feel around the holidays?
Jesus said “My Kingdom is not of this world” causing great disappointment among
many. In what ways has Jesus challenged your expectations of Him?
Some people refer to God’s kingdom as “upside down” in our thinking. How has that
“upside down” kingdom affected your perspective?
There’s nothing more counter-cultural than following Jesus’ call to make disciples of
all men. Here is a great resource to help you do just that!

DO GOOD… and Cultivate PEACE
We seem to be at odds with so many things. Our broken lives and our increasing frenetic
lifestyles testify against us. An old Christmas card that I have talks of “Peace on Earth.” It
is an extremely popular scriptural statement that we brush off and bring out each
Christmas season. It seems to mock us most of the time.
Did you know that the Greek word for peace is Irene and that it means harmony in
relationships between men? The Hebrew concept of Peace (shalom) is much wider and
is more than just harmony. To them peace was “completeness”, “soundness”, a
wholeness. True peace is spiritual peace from God and with God, peace in the heart,
peace as the disposition or spirit of a person. In the gospel of Matthew we are
admonished: Let us make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual
edification.
In the Church in which I grew up we did a weekly “sign of peace.” It was intended as a
time of putting the bad things aside. It was a time to recalibrate our view of mankind
and to recalibrate our own hearts. As we extended our hands in a true gesture of good
will, we could almost “feel” the love go from one hand to the other. In the old children’s
Christmas song “Holly Jolly Christmas” we are reminded to “say hello to friends you
know and every one you meet.” Somehow it was always a reminder to me that we are
all connected and responsible to/for each other.
Francis of Assisi prayed: “Lord make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is
hate, may I bring love; where offense, may I bring pardon; may I bring union in place of
discord; truth, replacing error; faith, where there was doubt; hope, for despair; light,
where there was darkness; joy to replace, sadness; Make me not so crave to be loved as
to love; help me to learn that in giving I may receive; in forgetting self, I may find life
eternal.”
In these chaotic times we should all pray to be instruments of God’s peace. Each one of
us can build a new world by every word out of our mouth. We have the means and the
knowledge, and we need only the desire, compassion, and vision to become God’s
instruments of peace. In faith, we believe that the spirit of the world will be conquered
by the Spirit of God. We must pledge to continue to wage peace as boldly as we wage
war-and with far more imagination. This is how we DO GOOD!
“For He Himself is our peace.” Ephesians 2:14

1-2-3… Be a Peace Maker!
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about God’s way, not our way.
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Psalm 34:14, Psalm 85, Proverbs 14:30, John 14:27, John 16:33, Romans 5:1,
Galatians 5:22, Philippians 4:7, 2 Thessalonians 3:16, 1 Peter 3:8-12
REACH OUT:
GOOD
Purpose to go out to the mall/shopping area, not to shop but just to wish everyone you
meet a Merry Christmas. Take a box or two of candy canes and hand them out as you
go.
GOODER
Is there someone in your life with whom you are not at peace? Make the phone call,
text, facebook, write that card/letter, or drive over to their home and take a moment to
start the conversation. Offer to pray with them. Tell them how much they have meant
to you and how much you miss them.
GOODEST
Take some time and spend it alone with God. Write a prayer or a new Christmas Hymn
regarding the peace you have come to know as His Child. Share it with your family and
friends.
REFLECT:
When you think of peace, other than cessation of war, what do you think of? If Jesus is
the prince of peace, what does that mean for your life?
Being a peace keeper is different than being a peace maker. Take out a piece of paper
and list the two on opposite sides, laying out the defining differences of both. Which was
Jesus?
If you could be a “peacemaker”, even win the Nobel Peace prize, how would you do it?
What would you ask God to partner with you for? What do you need to change about
yourself before you begin to tackle the world?
One way to cultivate peace is to fight for justice. Did you know human trafficking

How to DO GOOD… and Worship the KING
So throughout this whole Christmas season, we have done GOOD in many different
ways. We have given of our time, of our energies, of our money, and of ourselves. But
now we come to the week of Christmas. What else is there to do? What else is there to
give?
There is one final thing to give and it is maybe the most important thing. What, you may
ask? The final thing to give is YOU! Not to give OF yourself, but to give YOURSELF! And
there is one word that is the definition of this action…WORSHIP!
When we think of worship, most of our minds go straight to a worship service and
singing songs of worship to God. And that is great! This can definitely be an act of
worship. But is that all that worship is?
What is the definition of worship? William Temple calls it, “…the submission of all of our
nature to God.” The Greek word, proskuneo, that is translated as “worship” in the New
Testament has a meaning of bowing down before the object of our worship. That word
is used in Romans 12:1 where it says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s
mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your
spiritual act of worship.” So worship is bowing down before God and giving Him
everything you have and everything you are…because of His mercy and for His glory!
So how does that look in our lives? Is singing songs of worship always worship? Not
necessarily. But it can be if those songs are a declaration of our dependence on and love
for God. Because worship is a heart condition that is expressed in action. So what other
actions are worship? Take any action that you do throughout a day. Washing the dishes,
working on a report at work, playing with your kids, working on schoolwork, being still,
etc. All of these things can be worship IF and only IF they are purposely and intentionally
given to God as an act of worship and surrendered to Him for His purposes.
So as we enter this Christmas week that will be filled with fun and joy and stress and
busyness, make sure you stop and take some time to stop and remember what
Christmas means. Christmas is the celebration of our God coming to Earth to save us
from our sin! And “in view of God’s mercy” in doing that, DO GOOD by giving YOURSELF
to God in WORSHIP!
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth.” John 4:23
11
1-2-3… Be a Worshipper
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about worship. You might know more!
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Colossians 3:17, 23, John 4:23-24, Mark 12:33, 1 Samuel 15:22, Micah 6:8
REACH OUT:
GOOD
On Christmas day, before you do anything else, gather your family and friends together
and read the Christmas Story in Luke 2:1-20. After you read, give everyone a chance to
say one reason why God is worthy of worship. Have someone pray and worship God for
what He’s done!
GOODER
Sometime during the week, spend some time being still before God. Ask God some ways
in which you haven’t been worshipping him this past year in your time, money, or
energies. Write this down on a sheet of paper and commit to praying every day for
strength to worship Him in those things as you start the New Year.
GOODEST
Change the way you look at this week. If this week wasn’t yours but God’s how would it
be different? Get together with your family or friends and figure out one way that you
would change this week if it was God’s and not yours. Go do that!
REFLECT:
How does defining worship in this way change the way you look at your life?
Christmas and holidays can be a rough time for families if there is discord. How can even
honoring your family members be worship?
Romans 12:1 says that worship is like being a “living sacrifice”. What does that mean?
A lifestyle of worship? Seems kind of extreme… and it is!

How to DO GOOD… and Keep Going
[SIGH] It’s over… Another Christmas season, come and gone and here you are, still in
one piece.
Congratulations! You made it and not just through the labyrinth of holiday mayhem, but
through five whole weeks of being intentional about what it means to DO GOOD in the
Name of Jesus.
So how’d you do? Any surprises along the way?
We’re figuring by now you’re either:
a) Glad it’s over, and now you can get back to “real” life or
b) Thinking “I can’t stop NOW. How can I keep this going???”
Well, of course, we are assuming your answer is “b”, because this has been such a life
changing experience for you!
And of course, we have good news: it doesn’t have to stop here! But you already knew
that.
The question is, “how?” How DO we keep this going? Is it even possible to cultivate that
“feel good” Christmas spirit all year long? Let’s face it, people just aren’t as receptive to
you trying to start up a spontaneous Christmas Carol sing-a-long in the middle of
February… And who wants to bake all those cookies in June?
Hopefully, though, if this experience has taught us one thing, it’s that DOING GOOD
doesn’t have to look a certain way, or follow a certain format, and it especially doesn’t
have to wait for some official “program” to tell you what to do and when. If you have
taken anything away from this little experience, we hope it has been encouragement to
keep on doing what you’re already doing. Keep on loving your family, your neighbors,
your co-workers, strangers, even your enemies. There is no “right” way to do it – ok,
well maybe there is, but it’s pretty simple: listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. He not
only knows the “right” thing to do, but He’ll equip you with all you need to do it.
Remember, it all comes down to this: It is the kindness of the Lord that leads to
repentance. He did good for you. Now what will YOU do to keep passing it on?
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 10:27

1-2-3… Be a Life Long Do Good-er!
1. READ: a few suggested scriptures about living it out. You might know more!
2. REACH OUT: with a GOOD, GOODER, or GOODEST task… or, make up your own!
3. REFLECT: with a few discussion questions (bet you can think of a few, too)
READ: Psalm 85:8-13, Matthew 28:16-20, Romans 12:1-21, Ephesians 4:15
REACH OUT:
GOOD
Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution, why not just pray that God would give you
an opportunity to bless someone, somehow every single day this year?
GOODER
Remember those neighbors you invited over (or meant to invite over!) for cookies and
hot cocoa? Why not plan another get together sometime this winter or spring or, ooh,
how about maybe even organize a block party for this summer?
GOODEST
To take the last idea even further, what if you identified a need in your neighborhood –
maybe a struggling family needing some car or house repairs, and mobilized your
neighbors to do a “Get It Done” party? Then, pray for an opportunity to share the
Gospel when they ask “why?”
REFLECT:
How have you changed through this experience? What is one thing God has shown you?
Some people by nature are naturally more out-going than others. If you are more of an
introvert, is that a liability to reaching out? Or could it be considered an “asset”? How
so?
Can you believe on God to use you to draw someone closer to Jesus Christ as you let His
Mercy and Truth flow through you this year?
