‘Heart of the Alps’ or
‘Heart of Tyrol’
‘Heart of the Alps‘ or ‘Heart of Tyrol‘ is how Innsbruck is known in Austria and also across
the borders. It is only the 5th largest city in Austria, but has an international reputation as
a winter sports center.
Besides all the sporting events and activities, Innsbruck is a very beautiful city which
offers a wealth of culture and attractions accrued over a history of more than 800 years.
Innsbruck is one of the top three tourist destinations in Austria.
There is so much to do and see in Innsbruck that people sometimes get lost while trying
to get the most out of their limited time here. You, on the other hand, can relax - your
Edelweiss tour guide will take you to the city and show you a great time.
The journey to Innsbruck starts with an amazing train ride along the so called Karwendelbahn. The train has existed since 1912 and is very impressive because of the numbers of
tunnels and bridges on such a short track.
After getting off downtown, the tour really begins with a short walk to the center of
Innsbruck, where we will pass the Triumphpforte and the Annasäule, two of the most
important sights in Innsbruck. The Triumphpforte was built in 1765 to celebrate the
marriage of Emperor Leopold II.
The Annasäule, which stands in the middle of the renovated Maria-Theresien-Straße,
commemorates the defeat of the Bavarian Army in the 18th century. From here you can
enjoy a view of the Alps surrounding Innsbruck.
After a break in a local coffee place, you will get the chance to climb the city tower. You will
have a very good view of the city of the Alps from the 31 meters-high viewing platform.
From in front of the Golden Roof we will start a walk around the old town of Innsbruck and
explore all the secret byways. The walk brings us back to the Golden Roof and the Helblinghaus, of which you may have heard because of its famous baroque style.

The Golden Roof was built in the early 15th century for Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I
and was decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles.

The last stop on our old town list is Innsbruck’s cathedral and the Hofburg, an imperial court
that was once the residence of the emperor.
In the afternoon we will climb up into the Nordkette mountains to 2,256 meters. But no
worries - in Innsbruck this is not hard work. We simply jump on a cable car that takes us up
there in just a few minutes.
Up on the Nordkette we will enjoy our lunch break at a height of 1,905 meters and, at the
same time, enjoy the amazing view over Innsbruck and the surrounding valley. There will
still be time after lunch to take the 2nd cable car to the top, at 2,256 meters. This will be the
perfect place to take memorable pictures.
After enjoying the mountain and its flair, we will ride back down to Innsbruck and have an
afternoon stop in the Stiftskeller. This ancient building belonged to the Hofburgs and is now
a famous beer hall and beer garden.
Before we jump on the train and ride back to the hotel, you can enjoy either a coffee or a
‘Maß‘ (pronounced mass), which is one liter of beer served in a typical mug.
