36TH SEASON
AMERICAN MOSAIC
“The American musical experience offers music, traditions
and cultures of the world, like a mosaic, to create a
soundscape that defines our nation. It is music that
captures tragedy and triumph, struggle and freedom,
and conveys the essence of the American ethos. The
Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra devotes
its 2017-2018 Season to the American
Mosaic with both new and familiar works
for orchestra composed by the greatest
generation of American composers as well
as many of the most beloved works in the
orchestral repertoire. The music of Beethoven,
Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Ravel rubs shoulders
with Gershwin, Copland, Bernstein and Barber as our
orchestra celebrates richly diverse musical styles that are
as evocative as they are sumptuous. Join us, as we come
together to bring beauty and harmony to the Lowcountry.”

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: MOZART FEST AND GALA
EMANUEL AX IN CONCERT
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2017 • 7:30PM
John Morris Russell Conductor • Emanuel Ax Piano
EMANUEL AX
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 19 • Mozart Piano Concerto No. 27
World-renowned pianist, Emanuel Ax is considered one
of the finest concert pianists of the 21st century. He is a
Grammy award-winning, Polish-born naturalized American classical pianist, an internationally acclaimed performer, a teacher on the faculty of The Juilliard School
and the main duo recital partner of cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
From 1970, when Ax graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French, he participated in many major international competitions, including the Vianna da Motta in Portugal, the Queen Elisabeth
in Belgium and the Chopin in Warsaw. However, it was
in 1974 that he won the inaugural Arthur Rubinstein
Competition in Tel Aviv. It was this win that sparked the
beginning of Ax’s successful career as a concert pianist.
He continues to perform around eighty concerts a year.
Emanuel Ax has been an exclusive Sony Classical
recording artist since 1987. Recent releases include
Strauss's Enoch Arden narrated by Patrick Stewart;
discs of two-piano music by Johannes Brahms and
Sergei Rachmaninov with Yefim Bronfman; and soon to
be released Felix Mendelssohn Trios with Yo-Yo Ma and
Itzhak Perlman. Ax has received Grammy awards for the
second and third volumes of his cycle of Haydn's piano
sonatas, and has also made a series of Grammy-winning
recordings with cellist Yo-Yo Ma of the Beethoven and
Brahms sonatas for cello and piano.
He is a Fellow of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary doctorates of music from Yale and
Columbia Universities.

beggar Porgy, the beautiful cocaine addict Bess, and
her abusive partner Crown- featuring such iconic
songs as Summertime, It Ain't Necessarily So, and
I Got Plenty of Nothing. In 1956, Robert Russell

HILTON HEAD INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL: MARCH 8 – 12, 2018
The Hilton Head International Piano Competition is thrilled to announce a new and exciting addition to its schedule –
the HILTON HEAD INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL. Debuting in March, 2018, this innovative event will spotlight
outstanding former prize winners of our competitions, as well as other famous pianists, as they perform in solo recitals
and chamber music programs.
You’ll also be able to attend lecture/recitals, film events and discussions about music, piano in particular. Especially exciting
is the introduction of a jazz thread throughout the Festival! Steven Lin will perform at the opening of the Festival and Fei-Fei
Dong will appear in the chamber music program. The grand finale of the festival will be a concerto evening featuring our
own Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and four spectacular pianists: Charlie Albright, Jon Kimura Parker, and Ran Dank
and Soyeon Kate Lee playing a concerto for two pianos. Further information and schedules will be out in the fall of 2017.
With the addition of the Festival, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition will be changing to a three-year
rotation. The next competition for pianists 18 – 30, will be held in March of 2019, followed in 2020 by the competition
featuring pianists 13 – 17. The Piano Festival will return in the third year of the sequence in 2021.
The Piano Festival promises to be an exciting new part of the HHIPC!
