Prussia and Austria were the main countries that took control over Germany which made rivalry between them. The Assembly of Vienna removed 261 states which kept Germany with a total of 39. Decreasing the number of German states cheered state of mind of nationalism between these German states. WHAT IS NATIONALISM? Nationalism is a feeling of belonging and reliability that causes people to think of themselves as one nation. Nationalism was a very powerful technique used for : A creation of one nation from many separate countries ( For ex: Italy and Germany) HOW DID NATIONALISM AFFECT GERMANY What is Nationalism? How did it Start? Why did it start? What and who started it? Nationalists: are people who believe that people of a single “nationality” should unite under a single government. What is the goal of Nationalists? Create a nation state What establishes a nation state? Same Languages, Nationalities, Religion, Cultures, Territories, and History which is the most important. Otto von Bismarck OTTO VAN BISMARK Who is this guy? Where’d he come from? 1849 he was elected Prussian chamber of deputies. 1851 Frederick William IV made Bismarck the Prussian representative to the federal Diet (provinces) in Frankfurt. 1859 ambassador in Russia for Prussia. OTTO VAN BISMARK Once he was up to power He ILLEGALIZED socialism in other words, communism. He improved working conditions Persecuted national and religious minorities, especially Catholics In foreign affairs, tried to isolate France by making friendships with Austria and Russia. BISMARCK’S POLICY OF “BLOOD AND IRON” Bismark used a Realpolitik system, what this means is there is no morality in a society. IT SHOULD BE RULED WITH NOTHING BUT BLOOD AND IRON!!! “ Not by speeches and resolutions of majorities are the great questions of the time decided upon – but by blood and iron”- Otto Van Bismark AUSTRIA VS. PRUSSIA Austrian Empire Prussia They had a global Empire Mainly German population Major power in Europe Very Powerful army • They were in Wars with France, Italy, and Prussia Strict government Developed quickly GERMAN UNIFICATION SUMMARY OF 7 WEEKS WAR Prussia controlled Schleswig and Austria controlled Holstein Austria declares war on Prussia in 1866 Seven Weeks’ war. Prussia Occupies more territory Eastern and Western Prussia united for first time. 7 WEEKS WAR Prussia and Austria Sought to have a good relationship and soon had tension between one another. In 1866 Austria and Prussia go to war. The importance of this war was the victor would be the ones who get to control Germany. After Prussia had beaten Austria, they had complete control over Germany, and from then on Otto Van Bismark went on to unify the German states, Eventually led to the German Empire!!!!!!!! Well in France there was a revolution where they got rid of King Louis Phillip, and triggered the Germans to revolt as well. Sound familiar? It should, let me give you a hint, EGYPT, TUNASIA, IRAN ? After the revolution, it was the beginning of a new found government as we have mentioned in the presentation. A BRIEF HISTORY OF WHAT LEAD TO WORLD WAR 1 CONCLUSION The unification of Germany lead to power for the countries. Unifying Germany made it to have alliances. Why is knowing the unification of Germany important? It greatly discusses government and which type works best for a society. And it elaborates on how Nationalism is useful sometimes because it lead to the unification of Germany and another example was “the Unification of Italy”. QUESTIONS What is Nationalism and how did it affect the unification of Germany? What lead to nationalism? Who were the people involved in the unification of Germany? Who is the person who unified Germany? Why did he unify Germany? Why and how did Prussia and Austria eagerly wanted to control germany? What happened between those copuntrie?
