Lesson: PowerPoint 1 – PART 1
After finishing this lesson you should be able to:
1) demonstrate how to add slides to a presentation
2) demonstrate how to rearrange the order of slides
3) demonstrate how to change themes and transitions.
As an introduction to PowerPoint I’ll walk you through the design process of a simple
presentation.
Start PowerPoint. The program should open a blank presentation giving you a three
pane view something like this.
2) At the top of the window you'll find the familiar Standard toolbar and Ribbon bar. The
Ribbon may be hidden. Under the ribbon you’ll find tabs called Home, Insert, Designs,
Transitions, Animations, Slide Show, Review, and View. From here you can access
most of the options you’ll need to create a slide show.
Most people create a presentation by first creating all the slides. The Home tab contains
most of the commands you’d need while you are creating the slides. Under this tab
you’ll find Slides, Font, Paragraph, Drawing, and Editing options.
As you are adding slides, the Slides option is useful for adding a new slide, choosing
the kind of slide you want (one column, two column, title slide, and so on), and for
adding sections to a slide you’ve already added. The Fonts option lets you change a
font type, add a style (such as bold or italics) change its color, and so forth.
Under the Paragraph option you can select bullet styles, change text alignment to
center, right aligned or left aligned, change indents, and so on.
The Drawing option lets you insert shapes. And the Editing option lets you find and
replace words within your presentation. When you are ready to show your presentation,
click on the Slide Show tab on the toolbar for several different options.
3) Click on the Design tab. Here you will find all the built in themes with different colors,
backgrounds, and fonts. Some themes can be used with any topic while others might
not be appropriate all the time. There are several different screens of themes. On the
right side of the gallery bar is a button to move to the next set. Look at them all, then
return to the second set and choose one of the themes.
4) The first slide you see when you open a new presentation is the Title Slide. Usually
you only use it as the first slide of the presentation. Click where it says Click to add
Title and then type: Geometric Shapes
5) Click where it says Click to add subtitle and type: Recognizing Shapes in Everyday
Life.
6) Now we want to add a new slide. Click on the Home tab on the toolbar and select the
New Slide option. You should get a new slide that has a small text box at the top and a
larger one beneath it with the graphic you see to the left. This is the standard new slide.
Usually we want to add title and text and that’s the default.
7) Click where it says Click to add title and type: Facts About Triangles.
8) Click where it says Click to add text and type: A triangle has three sides & three
angles. Press Enter then type: The three angles always add up to 180 degrees. Press
Enter and now add a picture of a triangle from ClipArt or from the Internet.
8) Insert a new Slide and type the title as: Types of Triangles.
• Click where it says Click to add text then type: Equilateral triangles have 3
equal sides and each angle is 60 degrees.
• Press Enter then type: Isosceles triangles have 2 equal sides.
• Press Enter then type: Scalene triangles have no equal sides or angles.
9) From the New Slide drop-down, select a Content with Caption Slide and then type:
Equilateral Triangles (where it says to Click to add title)
• Click where it says Click to add text and then add a picture of an equilateral
triangle that you might find in everyday society. For example: Yield traffic sign or
a billiards rack.
• In the small caption box where it says Click to add text, type: Identifying
Characteristics
• Hit enter then type: 3 Equal Sides
• Hit enter and type: 3 Equal 60 degree angles

10) On the Home tab choose New Slide and from the New Slide drop-down, select a
Content with Caption Slide and then type: Scalene Triangles (where it says to Click
to add title)
• Click where it says Click to add text and then add a picture of a scalene triangle
that you might find in everyday society.
• In the small caption box where it says Click to add text, type: Identifying
Characteristic
• Hit enter then type: No Equal Sides
11) On the Home tab choose new Slide and from the New Slide drop-down, select a
Content with Caption Slide and then type: Isosceles Triangles (where it says to Click
to add title).
• Click where it says Click to add text and then add a picture of an isosceles
triangle that you might find in everyday society. For example: a slice of pizza.
• In the small caption box where it says Click to add text, type: Identifying
Characteristic
• Hit enter then type: 2 Equal Sides
12) A mistake has been made in terms of the order of our slides. The Isosceles triangles
slide should have come before Scalene triangles slide. On the left side of your screen,
you should see several smaller squares (or slides you have created.) Use your mouse
to click on the smaller Isosceles slide and drag it above the Scalene slide. Now the
slides are in the proper order.
13) Click on the first slide. We’re going to play the presentation and we must always
click on the first slide first if we want to show the entire presentation. The presentation
always starts with the slide that is currently showing in the edit pane. Now go to your
Slide Show tab on the toolbar and select the From Beginning option. Now click your
mouse or press the space bar to move from slide to slide.
14) This is a little boring so we’ll add a transition to each slide. Click on the first slide
(small slide on the left hand side of screen) and then hold down the shift key as you
click on every other thumbnail. Just as with FileMaker Pro, you can hold the shift key as
you select items to add to the selections. Now click on the Transitions tab of the
toolbar at the top of your screen.
15) There are several different transition options. Pick one and then play the slideshow
again. Make sure that all the thumbnails are still selected and choose another transition
style. Play the slideshow. Try several more. IMPORTANT! Save this TO YOUR DRIVE
as Your first name_PPT1.
16) Don’t turn this in my web page yet. You will complete it in after Lesson 1: Part 2!!
