Elaine Nishioka, M.S.N., C.P.N.P., R.N., is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Nursing at the
University of South Carolina Beaufort. Nishioka’s academic interests involve pediatric nursing care and
neonatal assessment in an environment of comprehensive neonatal nursing care.
Nishioka received a diploma at the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1969, and a
B.S. degree in Nursing at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing & Health in 1978. She earned
an M.S. degree in Parent-Child Nursing with a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty at the University of
Cincinnati in 1987.
Nishioka entered the healthcare field in 1969 as a staff nurse in pediatrics at University Hospital in
Cincinnati. In 1974, she moved to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center as a charge nurse.
The University of Cincinnati Student Health Service retained her as a staff nurse in the student clinic in
1975.
Three years later, Nishioka accepted the position of Instructor at the Cincinnati Public School of Practical
Nursing, a position she held until 1981. In 1980, she went to work as a part-time nurse in the postpartum unit at Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati.
Nishioka accepted a position as a part-time clinical instructor at the Great Oaks School of Practical
Nursing in 1981. Two years later, she moved to Allen House as a nurse in an emergency facility for
abused children. Allen House is operated by the Hamilton County (Ohio) Department of Human Services.
After a year-long period during which she provided pediatric nursing care to home-bound children,
Nishioka accepted a position as Clinical Instructor of Nursing in the BSN and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Master’s Program at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing & Health.
In 1989, she joined the faculty at Rowan Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury, N.C., as an instructor
in the Associate Degree Nursing program. The following year, she joined Pediatric Services of America in
Charlotte as a home-care nurse part-time. In 1991, she became affiliated with the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Hospital Authority School of Nursing as a member of the faculty in the ADN program.
In 1992, she joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a lecturer in the
Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Five years later, in 1997, she accepted a position managing the
Healthy Steps research project at the Institute for Research and Technology, Novant Healthcare System,
Eastover Pediatrics, in Charlotte.
In 2003, Nishioka became Director of the Practical Nursing Program at the Medical Careers Institute at
ECPI College of Technology in Charlotte. In 2006, she moved to Hilton Head Island as a staff nurse
working part-time on the Medical-Surgical/Geriatric Unit at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. A year
later, she became affiliated with Cypress Home Health, caring for elderly patients in their home.
In 2009, she joined Brightstar Health Care on Hilton Head Island, performing home healthcare
assessments, infusions and immunizations for the military. Later that year, she accepted a faculty
position as a Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics at the Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens University
of Charlotte.
In January of 2011, she joined the faculty at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga., as a
Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics. At the same time, she joined the faculty at USCB as an Adjunct Professor,
Pediatric Clinical.
Nishioka’s scholarly articles have appeared in the Journal of School Health, the American Journal of
Nursing, and other healthcare venues.
She was named one of The Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina in 2000, and was honored by the
University of Cincinnati, College of Nursing, with its Distinguished Alumni award in 2003.
Nishioka teaches Health Assessment and a clinical lab associated with Children’s Health Nursing.
