• Copy the Synonym Concentration instructions. Laminate the
instructions for repeated use.
• When using the Learning Deck at a literacy center, demonstrate how
to select a colored set, shuffle, set up, play, and then store the
cards in their Plastic Case.
Introducing Synonym Concentration, Level 1
Be sure students understand what synonyms are: words whose
meanings are nearly the same.
Model the Activities
Synonym Concentration, Level 1
Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students.
Place one colored set of cards face down into a Concentration grid
pattern. As students’ skill levels increase, more than one colored set
may be used for a game, and up to four students may then play.
Explain that the object of the game is to match a word to its
synonym. Remind students to “concentrate” as they turn over cards
because they must remember the location of the cards. Continue by
turning over two cards and reading them aloud. Ask students if this a
correct synonym match. If it is, remove the matched cards, keep them,
and take one more turn. (Check the Answer Key to confirm a correct
match.) If it is incorrect, replace both cards in their original positions,
and the turn is over.
Tips for the At-Risk Student or English Language Learner
• Practice only a few synonyms each week.
• Post the synonyms in the classroom and review them daily.
• Provide plenty of exposure to these words. Include them on class
writing and spelling lists.
